Likes
- It was close to London and I wanted to be able to visit London once in a while, also I love creating stuff thus why I was intrigued by civil engineering.
- It is diverse and offers opportunity to everyone regardless of their background. 60% are international students which was good for me as I was an international student from Zimbabwe who needed a chance to prove what I am capable of.
Dislikes
- The peer pressure. It can really only affect you if you let it, but it is hard to resist. With people having different backgrounds, you might see yourself comparing yourself to everyone and what they have which you don't. It is not a good place to be in.
Required Exams for Admission
It was very mind opening as I was experiencing a new culture with new people away from the people I grew up with. I enjoyed most of it but obviously got homesick most times and missed home and the food I was used. However, the university was very welcoming to international students so they made it easier fort us to be able to be integrated into the society.
Course Curriculum
Its extremely relevant as for my final year project i had to model cylindrical shells using computer software used in the industry such as Abaqus. I had to explain the effect of corrugation on cylindrical shell behavior when a force is exerted on it.
Faculty
If I am not mistaken, the ratio is about 1:50 on average. the staff are very useful and helpful whenever you have questions as they are very welcoming when you approach them. The staff who left an incredible impact on me is Kirstie Broadbent.
Campus Life
the clubs are very effective as i was part of the Zimbabwean society as the Vice President. I also took part in extracurricular activities such as the Summer Group project in which we had to design a courtyard fo4 students to use for extracurricular activities. It was really enticing and interesting to be able to work with people you do not see on a daily basis.
Placement
During the tenure of my 3 year course, we visited 3 companies which included HS2 construction which is the construction of a railway from London to Birmingham. In terms of placements, an average amount of people accepted for placement is 5.
Accommodation
The accommodation rooms were comfortable and I enjoyed staying with them. the first year I was in the cheapest accommodation going for 520pounds per month. It had a double bed and I shared 3 toilets with 5 other flat mates.
Exams
My scores: IELTS 8/5 which is an exam I took when I was in Zimbabwe to show that I can communicate in English.
Fees
For a year it was 14 000 pounds.
