What Students Say
Likes
- The opportunity to interact with a diverse group of friends from different cultural backgrounds
- Enriched my global perspective.
- Language was never a barrier on campus, as English was widely spoken, making
Dislikes
- My programme was very hectic - sometimes you have to spend a lot of time to get the things done (ofcourse it depends on the Master programme you chose - but be ready for it)
- The professors are approachable during class hours but apart from that they are always busy and it is difficult to reach out to them. The classroom periods are more than doubts clearing sessions than learning.
- The living expenses are really high and it feels very expensive if you are coming from place like India.
Course Curriculum
- The course was very difficult, if not more time consuming. (It varies course by course). Most of the courses were mainly theoretical but you'll at least gain the knowledge of industry standards. Some courses were both theoretical and practical.
- The standard working day of university is from 8-5 but you won't have classes the whole day and no classes some days. But most of the time you'll end up spending extra hours to get things done. Each lecture is generally 2 hours long and if you have lectures all day, its going to be 4 lectures. But, it is a very very rare case scenario.
- Somewhere around 50 students I'd say and 4 are Indians.
Admission Experience
- For Sweden, you can select upto 4 colleges in your application, and you can rank them. I have applied to KTH, Chalmers and Uppsala University. I have got admission for my first choice of preference. I have also qualified for other universities but it was pretty easy for me to decide.
- As KTH is the top ranked technical university in Sweden and also in the capital of Sweden, it was an obvious choice for me.
- The application period is from mid of october till mid of jan for the fall intake and there is only one intake for international master's programme. You'll be announced with the admission results by end of march or beginning of april.
- IELTS minimum score is required, but if you are from an English medium background and could able to prove it with a certificate, it should work.
- It was pretty much straight forward, just read the required documents and submit it accordingly.
- There is usually only one intake for Master Programme (Fall) - The application period is generally mid of Oct to mid of Jan. The results will be announced by the end of march or beginning of April. There will be 2 or 3 arrival days in August, during those days university will pick you up directly from the airport. Every hour shuttle bus will be runnign for smooth arrival of students.
Faculty
- The faculty to student ratio is quite well managed as each course equal mentorship is given. The course content is very wide for my programme and it gives me chance to explore many fields. But as of now, it is quite difficult to secure a job as the market is facing downwards trend.
- Usually, here we are independent and everything we have to find on our own, but maybe faculties can help you with reference if they have the right contact.
Campus Life
- There are 5 campuses. KTH Main campus, KTH Kista, KTH Sodertalje, KTH Flemingsberg, KTH Solna.
- All facilities are available in the campus.
- There are various clubs in the campus. Different student organizations like KTH Hyperloop team, KTH formula team, different chapters regarding different schools. Each chapter has various types of communities like Sustainability, sports, international, etc., THS main is the main student organization which also serves various events for international kickoff, parties, etc.
Part Time Jobs
- Getting a TA and RA is relatively very tough, I'd say 5% of students might have that chance. The pay is decent depending on the % of work and is paid on hourly basis most of the cases.
- There is no limitation on the number of hours to work but we should be able to manage both.
- It is very difficult to find a campus part time job.
- It depends on the type of jobs and mostly, they earn somewhere between 100-150sek/hour. It is very difficult to find part time job as there is a huge language requirement. The delivery job is the easy and most common job to find for students as it more flexible to work with.
- Other than that, you can go to restaurants, pizzeria, fast food (like mcd and max) and directly as them if they are ready to take part time workers. But be ready to work for lower wages. I personally work in a juice bar.
Placement
- In my batch, only 50% got employment in the first 6 moths. As the job market is not great, everyone is finding it difficult to find a job. The reasons are many companies already laid off lots of people and are currently not willing to hire new people. It is due to war and recession. Hope the situation changes soon.
- 30000-35000sek/month is the basic starting salary for freshers.
- There is no concept called placements. Everything you have to search and apply on your own. It goes through online application portal. But be ready to attend lots of careers fair and make connections. Networking is really important.
Accommodation
- For Stockholm there is student housing board called SSSB. You need to join the queue and register with your student status. Once you have been reviewed then you can bid the house using your queue days. If you have the maximum days among everyone then you'll get the accommodation. For international students, KTH provided accommodation for the first year. Similarly, each city has their own landlord and queueing system.
- Monthly rent is 4500sek and it includes everything.
- Once you have decided that you are coming to stockholm, join the SSSB queue immediately. Most students stay here in the place I stay called Lappis (The biggest student community). it is less than 3kms from campus. 15-20mins by public transport.
Exams
- IELTS is required. It is not mandatory, but it is good if you have. (Otherwise if you can prove you have done your previous studies in English medium, which is sufficient)
- A strong SOP and LOR from high professionals will enhance you application. Also CV is must.
- No interview.
Fees
- I'm going to break down the cost in terms of INR. For the entire course the tuition fees come somewhere 27-28lakhs INR (Depending on the exchange rate). The tuition fees you pay every semester.
- You can easily find student accommodation here, at least at the beginning the university will help you to find one). It ranges from (35000 - 65000) INR/month. Student transport (5000 INR/month). Other expenses (10000-20000) INR/Month. Total= 50000-90000) INR/Month
Scholarship
- No, there are not any specific scholarships provided for my course. But, there is a full scholarship called India scholarship, which is awarded to only 2 students every year. So, it is very competitive to gain a scholarship.
- Also, there are other scholarships given for people from some other countries. These options are limited if you are from India. If you do well in your first year of studies, you can apply and win a scholarship for your 2nd year.
