Remarks
As I mentioned, college management has to maintain similarities with other GMR organizations, which makes them to operate on corporate norms, and the goods of that culture are adapted.
Entrance Preview
I took EAMCET-AP.
Course Curriculum Overview
GMRIT used to be an affiliated college to JNTU, then. But now it became autonomous institute. Course curriculum is similar to any other college around, but has additional facilities for students who'd like to improve their skills in a specific field or a specific stream. For example, language lab helps students to groom their English vocabulary, speaking and listening skills. This is just an example. Overall, we have opportunities that help nurturing all-round development of a student.
Internships Opportunities
As far as I know, no internship and so no stipend when we were supposed to do our academic project,we had to search for it outside the campus, and the faculty helped us by guiding while we were on the project, outside the campus.
Placement Experience
I'm not aware of the numbers regarding the packages or placements, but the opportunities and access to the opportunities are more here. College has some collaboration with the colleges close by(in Vizag), through which students get access to placements.
College Events
Events happen here frequently. Symposiums happen occasionally. Technical competitions, paper presentations, mini project competitions etc happen. Coming to fun events, we have College days, department days, fresher parties, farewell parties happen at regular intervals keeping people engaged to their college and college mates.
Fee Structure And Facilities
Fee used to be around 9000/- for us now I heard it as close to 90K per annum, out of which government pays around 35K in the form of fee reimbursement, and remaining students have to pay. So, 50K college fee and some for accommodation and food, which is slightly high for a lower middle class family if student has self discipline, then he may cut down the hostel expenses, by choosing to stay out side the campus.
Loan/ Scholarship Provisions
I'm not aware of any scholarship, but it was in discussion when Sri APJ Abdul Kalam visited the campus, that they will establish one on his name. But I'm not not aware of any such. Please enquirer loan facility will be available for sure.
Campus Life
I think I will have to repeat a lot of the things that I mentioned already. To the big question, simple answer is yes, we do have lots and lots of extra curricular activities inside the campus. Coming to the diversity, we can find people from atleast 3 states and different ethnicities, religions here stay together happily. No need to worry about any intolerant incidents. As the college is treated as one of the GMR group organizations, we see a touch of corporate culture, where people are turned to respect others, and allow all to have their voices heard.
Hostel Facilities
Hostel, as I mentioned above is expensive. To cut down the cost, student either can stay in private hostels outside the campus, or can group with like minded and rent a house, appoint a maid for food. Private hostels all together including food and accommodation comes close to 2500 per month, and sharing house with friends may take this to a little lower. I stayed in a house, that was one of the closest to the campus, for 1200 /- rent, now it might have become 3000.
Alumni/Alumna
We have an alumni network setup, that became active exponentially after all got connected through their social network ids. Seniors are supportive in any job openings.
Exam Structure
JNTU ( I think it is same as any other) habituated continuous exams to the student. Semester hardly has 3 months apart from main exams and holidays. Out of these 3 months, student has to take 5 mid exams, or internal exams. So, 5*6 =30 exams ehich is made a tradition in Engineering. Whether we feel that as hectic or chilled.. depends on person. From my experience, 95% of students don't feel pressurized with this structure, surprisingly.
Admission
I secured rank of 7000 in EAMCET. After the rankings, government releases notification for allotment of seats. It was done through counseling at that time, which we had to attend in Vizag, which was the regional center then. After 2006 I believe, it became web counseling. In this, students are given kind of scratch cards, which has a student specific code on it. Using this, they need to login to counseling website and fill as many options they'd likely to fill. Student should select the college's in the order of preference they'd like. After the closing date, the software runs an algorithm that takes student rank, college seats availability, the order of preference chosen, reservation etc and allots seat to the student. Out of all these inputs fed to the software, only the tank is in student's control.
Faculty
Faculty, to be frank, need some improvement. While I'm not denying the fact that the competencies and the degrees have improved a lot and lot when compared to 2001. There are really good profs and people who help the students to get practical knowledge.
