Is there a semester system in IGNOU for BA courses?

AK
Anil Karki Posted On : October 28th, 2022
MCom in Economics and Accounting from Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) (Graduated 2015)

No, there is no semester system in IGNOU for BA courses. In IGNOU students are enrolled in two cycles (January and June). The submission of assignments and TEE (Term End Examination) is scheduled once a year.

Although assignments can be submitted only once a year, there is a high chance that if you fail to appear in May or December TEE, you can appear for that particular subject on another cycle.

For example, you enrolled in this course in 2021. If you wish to appear for June 2022 TEE, you are required to submit the assignments by March 30 2022. If you fail to appear or pass the TEE, you can appear for the same exam in December 2022.

Indira Gandhi National Open University is a public university approved by NCTE and AICTE. It offers a number of open learning programs and is well known and recognized among a number of different organizations like the Association of Indian Universities, therefore, doing a B.A. degree from here is a good choice. The following points highlight important aspects of obtaining a B.A degree from the institute.

Academics:

  • The BA degrees at IGNOU offer a wide variety of core disciplines in subjects like Economics, Sociology, and Public Administration with a lot of the course work overlapping with UPSC preparations.

  • The exams for the coursework are also designed such that they benefit the student if they are appearing for other exams like UPSC.

  • IGNOU is known for its well-founded courses that ensure the best interests of the student. Depending on if one plans to choose a distance learning or open course degree, one can choose to appear for UPSC.

BA degree from IGNOU:

  • Obtaining a BA degree from the university depends upon if you are a part-time student at the institute or committed to full-time study. The former situation might be a little tough on the student.

  • Students are continuously evaluated with assignments, marks from which are counted for the final result.

  • Assignments carry a weightage of 30% of the total result. Students are barred from appearing for end term examinations if they miss an assignment.

  • The major evaluation component is the term-end evaluation system which carries a total of 70% weightage. These exams are conducted twice a year.

  • Students are expected to study from the course material provided and answer accordingly to the point. Most importantly, ensure that one is registered for the exam, failing which results are not declared.

At Delhi College of Arts and Commerce, the BA program has 4 subjects in each semester. There are a total of 6 semesters. Discipline subjects are those that students get to choose and they have to study these subjects for the whole 6 semesters.

There are many combinations of subjects, such as Economics+English, Political Science+Philosophy, Maths+Economics, etc. Whatever combination you choose you will need to study that for the whole 6 semesters and you can’t change afterward.

In the first semester, you will have to study one English (compulsory) and one Ability Enhancement course. You can choose these subjects while applying for admission. In the second semester, you will have to study one Hindi and Environmental Science. In third semester, you will need to study one English and one skill enhancement course. For fourth semester, you will have to study one Hindi and one SEC.

For the fifth and sixth semesters, you will get the opportunity to choose one generic elective subject based on your discipline. You can’t change after you choose.

How many marks do I need to obtain in the BA entrance test to qualify for Patna University?

JS

B.Com from Patna University (2019)

Every college has their own cut offs presented by them. The cut off marks tend to decrease with consecutive lists.

If you are a General category student 55-65 marks out of 100 would be enough to get you through. The reserved categories like OBC, SC or ST get a relaxation of 5-10%. Patna University also considers students from sports quota and other extra curricular achievements.

Should I do BA programme from St. Stephens or English honours from JMC?

SR
Sugandhi Roy Posted On : October 29th, 2021
studied at Kirori Mal College, Delhi University

I have friends from both St. Stephens and JMC. Here are a few of the information that I got from them.

  • St. Stephens is a prestigious college with its own sets of rules and code of conduct. It has a good campus. If you want to explore ideas, places and have a decent campus life then St. Stephens is a great option.
  • JMC is an off-campus college. So, you won’t have access to campus. It is a girl’s college with strict rules.

Now coming to the courses, in English honors, you will learn about a myriad of texts from different countries and different time periods. However, you will have to spend your three years around poetry and prose. You won’t get to experience much diversity when it comes to subjects. For the BA program, however, you can choose all subjects from Social Science. There are many combinations that you can opt for.

So, I will suggest that you choose the program which will keep you interested for the next three years. College life will be similar irrespective of the institute. Also, gone are the days when students with honors degrees were treated superior to the students who pursued programs.

Yes, you can migrate from DAV College Chandigarh to PU main campus in your 2nd year of BA

You just need to know about the requirements for doing so. These could include: marks required or seats vacancy, etc.

The students involved in the youth elections will be able to guide you. Try getting a hold of a person who is a party member. He may be able to get you in, by admission or by referral.

Also note that there could be a slight chance that in PU, the reference required has to be powerful or influential.

The BA program offered by the Delhi College of Arts and Commerce is good. The infrastructure of the department is decent. You will not face any trouble adjusting. The campus is peaceful and ideal for studies.

The faculties are great. Other than lectures they will give you information regarding useful seminars and workshops.

The rest depends entirely on you. Attendance is not mandatory, so many students choose to bunk classes. But if you want to learn there are great facilities. The library has a huge collection of books.
