In India, many young people who can't afford expensive coaching for engineering entrance exams often choose to do a BCA program, hoping it will lead to a job. However, the reality is that the education system in India doesn't offer much in terms of job opportunities for BCA graduates. As a result, they're often pushed to pursue an MCA.

Even with an MCA, they typically end up working alongside BTech graduates in the IT services sector, earning modest salaries around 3 to 4 lakhs per year. The curriculum for BCA, MCA, BTech, and MTech has been outdated for decades, and this limits the job prospects for graduates from these programs.

I’m currently enrolled in the online BCA program at Manipal University Jaipur. Honestly, it’s not the best option if you’re aiming for a high-paying job right after. I mainly joined to get a degree. One major downside is the exam setup. We’re required to type out everything without glancing down, staring at the screen for a full three hours.

They provided access to the student portal, which is basically an LMS with videos of teachers reading from PDFs. The live sessions are pretty much the same. For internal assignments, we need to type out 16-20 pages in MS Word, and the grading seems quite unfair.

I’m in my final year of the online BCA program from Manipal University Jaipur, and here’s what I think:

The course offers a lot of flexibility, letting you learn at your own speed, as long as you complete the semester's syllabus by the time exams roll around.

Attendance is tracked by how much of the course content you engage with on the LMS, not by how many live sessions you attend. This setup is great for those who are working and need a convenient way to study.

You'll have to be good at learning independently, as you can't rely entirely on the professors to cover everything. Some topics, especially in programming, will need self-study. The quality of professors is similar to what you'd find in any tier-3 college in India.

Being able to type quickly is important because in theory exams, you'll need to write four answers of 200–250 words and three answers of 400–450 words. You can look at the keyboard while typing, but make sure to check the screen regularly.

Consider this course if your goal is to earn a BCA degree or go on to do an MCA. It's pretty tough to get a high-paying job with just a BCA degree alone. Most BCA grads will need an MCA or similar master's degree to land a good job, and this applies to those from MUJ online as well.

The fees are reasonable, costing me around ?1,20,000 for the whole program (6 semesters), which is about the cost of one year in a regular BCA program.

Networking can be a bit tricky online. You'll need to be proactive in connecting with other students, maybe through online meetings, since you won't meet them in person.

BCA won't teach you everything you need to know as a programmer. The useful skills you'll pick up include data structures, algorithms, operating systems, networking, OOP, DBMS, and the basics of languages like C, C++, Java, and Python.

The final project is crucial. Try to come up with an original idea and execute it instead of copying someone else's work. This will help you gain practical skills that are valuable at work. Your final-year project is also a key part of your resume, so choose a topic in the field you want to work in.

In summary, if you aim to join the tech industry, doing a BCA or an online BCA is a good move, as long as you extend your learning beyond the course. If you're young, aim for an MCA or another master's degree to enhance your qualifications, since a BCA alone isn't usually enough for a good job. Some BCA grads do land great jobs, but that's often due to the extra skills they acquire during their studies, not just the degree itself.

Honestly, I find the BCA program at Manipal University Jaipur quite beneficial. The faculty members are respectful and guide us well through the curriculum. The course covers a lot of practical aspects, which prepares us for the job market. Even though it's fully online, we have access to a job portal for placements. The fees are decent considering the quality of education provided. I feel like I made a good choice.

I think doing a BCA online from Manipal University Jaipur is worth it. The course curriculum is quite nice, covering languages like Python, C, and more. The virtual labs help in understanding practical applications, and the fees are reasonable at Rs. 22,500 per semester. Plus, you can get a 10% scholarship if you did well in your previous studies. Overall, the quality of education seems good, and I’m excited to learn more about coding.
