US people are good at management. So they seek technical experts from India. This is why the top performers of IITs get readily placed in IT jobs in the US for attractive salaries (more than 7 figures in rupees).
Whether you join an IIM or Great Lakes Institute, both receive a limited number of US offers during placement season. As for off campus placements, IIM Shillong and Great Lakes are both average institutes. So the chances of getting a US based offer are further reduced.

- Placements: IIM Shillong has seen a gradual rise in the placement figures. This year the institute witnessed a 100% placement percentage with an increase of 72.56% in the Highest CTC to INR 55.22 LPA whereas the average CTC increased by 20.50% which stood at INR 23.10 LPA.
- Competitions: The tremendous growth of the institute can be attributed to the various National Level competitions it has won so far. These competitions were conducted by companies like Yes Bank, Loreal, CFA institute, and other B Schools and also competed against IIM Shillong.
- Crowd: The crowd at IIM Shillong has a diverse academic background ranging from IITs, and NITs, to LSR, SRCC, and even St. Stephen’s. Many State level cricketers and badminton players also make it to IIM Shillong owing to their high CAT percentile. However, the majority of the crowd is engineers.

Which is better, IIM Shillong, NMIMS or XLRI-HR?
NMIMS is in Mumbai, which makes it a professional hub. whereas XLRI is in Jharkhand and IIM Shillong is in Shillong. It ranks 30 on the NIRF 2020 rankings, XLRI on 9th, and NMIMS on 13th place.
Students need 50% and above marks in a bachelor's degree from a recognized university and the qualification of the CAT/MAT/XAT/GMAT entrance exam to take admission into the program. An interview/Group Discussion may follow as additional admission criteria.

Infrastructure and Faculty
- IIM Shillong, XLRI, and NMIMS have libraries, computer centers, seminar halls, auditoriums, sports facilities, and hostels.
- NMIMS has a video streaming facility on each floor. IIM Shillong has WMN in its dormitories and a common reading room as well.
- There are about 5-10 faculty members for the HR program at these institutes and they have been recruited after qualifying either the UGC Net exam or possess a Ph.D.
- Apart from this visiting faculty from universities abroad like the Dauphine University, University of Geneva etc; and business magnates come as guest lecturers from time to time.
Placement 2020
IIM Shillong
- The institute saw recruitments by 62 companies among which were Tata Group, Deloitte, And Aditya Birla Group.
- The highest CTC given was INR 28 LPA, and the average given to the top 20% of students was 22 LPA.
- Operations and HR students were given 20 LPA average CTC.
XLRI
- The HR program saw 100% placements this year.
- McKinsey and company, Goldman Sachs, and Aditya Birla group were the main recruiters.
- The highest CTC of 58 LPA was offered by an international company.
- 24 new recruiters including Myntra also joined this year.
NMIMS
- HR batch saw visits from 40+ fortune 500 companies and the top 200 were made an offer of 22.8 LPA.
- The highest domestic CTC given was 38.57 LPA, and the highest international CTC given was 58 LPA.
Students can make a decision based on the aforementioned factors.
What is a college comparison, SIBM Pune or IIM Shillong?
It is tough to choose between SIBM Pune and IIM Shillong. SIBM is quite an older institute and also a reputed one. It was founded in the year 1978. It has a good placement report. The average package offered at SIBM Pune is 21 lac per annum.
IIM Shillong, on the other hand, is a dream B-School for many. First of all, it is an IIM. The name will be going to remain with you for the entire of your life. IIM Shillong also offers excellent placements. The average placement at IIM Shillong is 22 lac per annum, and the highest salary offered is 55 lac per annum.
If I had both options, then I would have gone for IIM Shillong. The first reason is the IIM tag, and the other is that Shillong is the best place to spend two years of my life.
Which one should I choose between IIML-ABM and IIM Shillong PGP?
There are almost the same given opportunities in both the institutes during summer, Laterals and Final placements. Well, there are two things you need to focus upon:
A few selected firms would not accept ABM students for the process (read Top 3 Consulting and Investment Banks and a certain Indian FMCG firm).
You will have to do ABM courses in your 2nd year with an option to take 2-3 electives, whereas in PGP you will be provided almost 15 electives.

If you want to do Marketing or General Management or end up in consultancy, then IIM L ABM is a good course because ABM 2nd year courses are nothing but Marketing, and so you don't miss out on anything compared to a PGP student. But go for IIM L ABM if you want to seek financing or operations.

Which is better for a fresher, IIM Shillong or MDI Gurgaon?
Be it fresher or not, MDI Gurgaon is definitely a better option than IIM Shillong. I have drawn a comparison between the 2 B Schools based on the following parameters
Fees: The fees of the PGPM program at IIM Shillong stands at INR 14.6 Lakhs whereas that of MDI Gurgaon is INR 24,47,400. While some might comment on the huge difference in fees, the ROI at MDI Gurgaon is worth it.
Placements: The table below compares the placement statistics of both B Schools.
Location: MDI Gurgaon has a location advantage over IIM Shillong as it is located in the commercial hub in contrast to the North-Eastern location of IIM Shillong.
Though I have given my opinion about MDI being better, the final decision is yours to make.
