How is mechanical Engineering in NIT Raipur?
NIT Raipur offers a great Mechanical Engineering program. The department has a dedicated faculty pool. Professors are well-experienced in their field. Placements are good for Mechanical. The average package received by the students is around INR 7-8 LPA. Companies such as Deloitte, L&T, Hero MotoCorp, etc. take part in the NIT Raipur placements. Many students also get recruited by non-core companies. The department has many clubs such as SAE group and Robotics club.
How is NIT Raipur for MCA?
I studied MCA at NIT Raipur, and completed my degree a few years back. Here are some pros and cons of joining this stream at NIT Raipur-
Pros-
- You’ll get an NIT tag.
- You’ll be offered a decent package, given that you stand eligible for the placements.
Cons-
- The faculty for MCA is underqualified. The teachers don’t solve the students’ doubts properly. If argued with, they might reduce your marks in the examinations.
- You can’t choose your elective paper in the 5th semester.
- The HOD and other faculty members aren’t cooperative or supportive towards their students.
- Although you’ll sit for placements with CS and IT engineering students, many companies don’t allow MCA students to apply. However, the same companies do pick MCA students from some of the other NITs.
- Sometimes when well-known brands visit the campus with placement offers, many MCA students are already busy with their internships.
- You’ll have to score 60% and above throughout your academic career. Failing to do so means you’ll most probably not be placed.
- Even if you stand eligible for placements, getting placed is still a challenge.
- The fee is higher in comparison to the educational and hostel facilities provided by this college for MCA students.
- B.Tech students are always prioritized and kept above MCA students, which is a bit unfair.
Thus, NIT Raipur isn’t the best place to pursue your MCA degree from.
Which is better VIT or NIT Raipur for CSE?
According to a senior of mine who has graduated from NIT Raipur, the institute is better than most top colleges in Bangalore including VIT institutes.
Despite having a soft spot for NIT Raipur, she does not discourage candidates from trying their luck at any other university, including VITs. She, however, suggests that they should get acquainted for measuring progress after completion of the undergraduate degree.
Campus:
- VIT campus is definitely better than the NIT Raipur campus. Although the NIT Raipur has been considerably renovated.
- The VIT campus will cost around 2 lakhs per year which includes hostel fees as well. Education at NIT Raipur will cost around 0.5 lakhs.
Course:
- The course of VIT will not have any effect on your CSE placement.
- On the other hand, your coding skills and DS+Algo will have a part to play in your placement. Either way, the effort is required regardless of how much you pay.
Placements:
- By the time you graduate, if you choose NIT Raipur, that is, the institute will pretty much be holding its own among other giants. My senior said two of her batchmates landed a 75 LPA package without paying hefty college fees.
- VIT, being a private college, is known to boost their placement records. In addition to that, they have a management quota as well which goes on to say that not all the best minds will be found there.
- A friend of my seniors had a good rank and went to VIT. He got chosen in three companies. VIT attracts employers in large numbers but they offer packages of only around 3-3.5 LPA.
In the case of NIT Raipur, almost every candidate will get at least one job, in recent years many also bagged two jobs. The ones who have, get a package of 4-8 LPA for the first job, and a package of as much as 16-17 LPA for the second job. Candidates who do not get a second job also land a job with a package of 4-8 LPA.
Overall, it is safe to say that CSE from NIT Raipur will be a good option.
What should I choose, CS at NIT Hamirpur or CS at NIT Raipur?
NIT Hamirpur is ranked 98 among the best engineering colleges of India by NIRF, 2020. Admissions for CS in this university are based on the rank of JEE mains followed by counselling and interview. NIT Hamirpur also has a good placement rate.
NIT Raipur is ranked 67 among the best engineering institutes in India by NIRF, 2020. The admissions process for NIT Raipur is similar to NIT Hamirpur, based on JEE rank followed by counselling.

The infrastructure of the college is really good. Classrooms set up with modern instruments, the library is open to all, medical facilities and equipped labs are also available in college.

Along with this the Institute also has a huge ground for sports activities. Teachers are well qualified in their particular fields and very helpful.
NIT Raipur:
All necessary facilities are available on campus. The CS Faculty is well-qualified and cooperative. Teachers guide students regarding their career opportunities and placements.
Overall NIT, Hamirpur and NIT Raipur are really equally good Institutes for CS. Placement rate of the universities is almost 92%. So, choose an institute according to your convenience.
Is branch change option available in NIT Raipur?
Yes, NIT Raipur offers a branch change option after 2nd semester. The availability of the branch change option depends on the availability of vacant seats in a specific branch. You will need a CPI of 7.5+ to apply for branch change. You can enlist 10 choices of branches while applying. Once submitted, you can’t alter the choices.
Which is better, NIT Raipur or LNMIIT Jaipur?
If you are getting CSE at LNMIIT, go for it. Do not choose a branch just for the sake of the NIT tag. After completing the degree you may only have placement options in MNCs like TCS, Infosys, etc. I know many people from unknown branches of IIIT working in service companies. So, you get the idea.
- If you are one of the top students at LNMIIT Jaipur, you can easily secure a placement package of around 7-8 LPA.
- According to the recent industry trends, for securing good placement offers you need to be good at coding. And LNMIIT has a developed coding culture.

If you have the option, you can join NIT Raipur CSE too. The placement will be slightly better as compared to LNMIIT.
Do first year students get hostels at NIT Raipur?
The answer is yes, as there are separate hostels for the 1st year. If you have taken admission to NIT Raipur, you have to accept the seat. You will also have to fill up a form for hostel accommodations.
- The seat numbers are limited in comparison to the student’s number. Due to this, the college administration provides seats and hostel allotments as per the students' rank. Seats are reserved for the students from state and reserve categories.
- Hostels A, B, C, D, and F have a dining hall and recreation hall, that is equipped with Television, and some indoor games like carrom and table tennis.
- Hostel H has a fully furnished dining and recreation hall with well-resourced indoor games and other facilities. However, all hostels are enough well-equipped with the necessities of the students.
Another important thing is that there are only 4 hostels with a maximum capacity of 100 students in NIT Raipur for the first-year students. Each of them includes two types of hostel with two bedding facilities or three bedding facilities in each room.
Hostel allotment is mainly done as per the student’s All India Rankings, and 25% is reserved for the state students and reserve categories. But, from the second year, based on the Cumulative Pinter Index, hostel allotment is done.

How is the hostel facility at NIT Raipur? How many students will stay in one room?
NIT Raipur has 5 boys' hostel and 3 girls hostel in all. The hostel facilities are great and every hostel has a huge dining hall with a mess, badminton court, garden, etc.
Boys Hostels
- The boys' hostels at NIT Raipur are named as A-Manipat, B-Chitrakot, D-Malhar, F-Kotumsar, and H-Sirpur
- The first-year students of B.Tech and B. Arch., are allotted the first 4 hostels and hostel H is for the second, third, and fourth year of B. Tech., B. Arch., MCA & M. Tech.
- The total capacity of these hostels is 1180.
Girls Hostels
- The girls' hostels are named as E-Mahanadi and G-Indrawati housing around 400 students. 403.
- For first-year students, 75% of seats are for BTech students, and the remaining 25% are allotted to students from the state quota (Chhattisgarh).
- The students from local and nearby areas are given the least preference.
Overall, boys and girls are allotted both single and double-occupancy rooms.
What are the best student organizations or clubs to join at NIT Raipur? Why should students join them?
Assuming you don’t have any preferences currently in joining any of the clubs at the college, let me help you out by being as lucid as possible. If you are primarily looking for fields like singing, dancing, or literature, clubs like Raaga, Nrityam, and Literati will be your default choices. Also, always keep in mind that the club management certificates you get in your senior years will always be useful in the future.
Now, here are some parameters you can consider before planning on joining any of the clubs at NIT Raipur:
- Learning/Passion: You should figure out what plan to gain from joining a particular club, how it will help you achieve your future goals. Additionally, do you feel good after joining the club? It should be able to help you gain confidence, build your abilities, hone them and also bring them out. If you are looking to be a journalist in the future, PMRC will be good for you. If you are looking at sports, you can go to Shaurya.
- Diversity: Make sure that the club you join is not biased towards a single department. This happened with the Innovation cell that includes mainly students from biomedical sciences who do not contribute at all to the point of the club. Some other clubs are dominated by CS/IT/EC/MME students which will not help your cause at all. Make sure that there is diversity in the club you join.
- Time Value: A few clubs like Technocracy, Samskruti, and E-Cell mainly focus on labor during fests. If you are a first-year student, they will exploit your eagerness to do things. While working during the fest is Technocracy and Samskruti’s job, E-cell was more about entrepreneurship. In other words, don’t work for a club till your interest are satisfied because some clubs will make you volunteer for them and won’t let you join till your second year.
In my opinion, some of the best clubs are NCC, NSS, PMRC, and Raaga. I-Cell, E-Cell, and Nrityam are not that great.
