Why is it that MBA coaching classes always suggest joining new IIMs (including IIM Shillong) over other top colleges like NITIE, MDI, NM, etc.? Do they have any ulterior motive behind this?
It is likely that the institute you are considering wants to increase the number of its students who are accepted into the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) because the IIM brand holds a lot of value in the eyes of prospective students. However, it is important to do your own research about the institute, especially by talking to current students, to make sure it is the right fit for you. Even if an institute has a high number of students accepted into IIMs, it may not necessarily mean that it is the best option for you. It is always important to consider all of your options and make a decision that is best for you.
IIMs can be a good option for pursuing an MBA for several reasons. First, the tag, which provides support and guidance to newer IIMs, can help ensure that these institutes have a well-tested teaching methodology and offer high-quality education. Additionally, the smaller batch sizes at new IIMs can provide students with more individualized attention and a more personal learning experience. New IIMs may also have decent placements, and they often have the support of the government, which can provide additional resources and stability.
Furthermore, NITIE (National Institute of Industrial Engineering) is often considered a top choice for operations, but if you are open to making a decision about your field of study after your first year of MBA, new IIMs may be a good bet for you. How much GMAT score is required in IIM Shillong?

So a good GMAT score for an International student is anything above 700.
For the Executive program too, a GMAT score of 700+ is a good target. If your profile is average you can target a higher GMAT score.
What is better if I want to do an MBA in finance: JBIMS, IIM Shillong, or IIM Kozhikode?
With Kozhikode having completed its 20th year and psychologically establishing itself as one of the older IIMs, placements in finance have been better this year. Some of the big brands that visited IIM K but not JBIMS include Credit Suisse, Bank of America Continuum, Deutsche IBD, Deutsche GTB, and a few others. While some companies, such as India Bulls, visit JB every year due to its proximity, the placement season at K saw many new and prominent first-time recruiters, such as CS, BoFA, IDFC, and others. The only big name missing from K's portfolio is Standard Chartered, which happens to be a regular recruiter at JB.
Overall, K is shifting toward a more balanced finance portfolio, with DB, GS, and JPMC providing middle office IBD roles, DB, Axis, ICICI, Yes Bank, Citi Bank, IDFC, Edelweiss, and Indus Ind providing corporate banking/treasury roles, and SBI Caps and Entrust providing front end IBD/asset management.
Should I go to IIM Lucknow or IIM Shillong?
The college you decide to go to depends on what you want from your MBA. Many are just interested in placements. Some want to experience a nice relaxing college life. So these points might clarify further which of the 2 colleges is for you
Location: IIM Shillong is located in a serene area in North-East and has a calm temperature throughout. The ambiance is much more relaxing than IIM Lucknow which has extreme temperatures.
Curriculum: IIM Lucknow has a rigorous curriculum and the students face cut-throat competition causing many to repeat the first year. In contrast, IIM Shillong’s curriculum is balanced and students remain relaxed most of the time.
Sports: If you are a sports freak, then IIM Shillong is not for you as it has very limited opportunities as opposed to IIM Lucknow which has amazing opportunities.

So IIM Lucknow is definitely a better option if you are career oriented. But if you want to experience a relaxed campus life and create memories, IIM Shillong won’t disappoint you a bit.

Sir what are my chances of converting IIM Shillong at WL 412 (General)?
IIM Shillong shortlisted 1200 candidates for the total MBA seats, 180. For the year 2019-2021, the waitlist for IIM Shillong moved to 552 for general category candidates, and for ST category candidates, the waitlist moved to 72.
The waitlist movement of the new institute is affected by the waitlist movement of the older or BLACKI institutes, and it is also affected by some renowned non-IIMs like FMS, XLRI, NITIE, and IIFT Delhi. As the waitlist for the top IIMs and top B-schools moves, the waitlist for lower institutes moves quickly. So, you have a good chance of converting to IIM Shillong at 412 waitlists in the general category.
Although it is not guaranteed that you may convert to the college in the second or third waitlist, there is a high chance that you could convert to the later waitlists.
How difficult is it to convert to IIM Shillong? How easy/difficult is the GDPI round?
The experience of GD and PI for IIM Shillong differs from one person to another.
The GD is case-based wherein you’ll get a real-life situation. You’ll have to analyze the problem and offer your opinions and effective solutions. This is easy for an engineering graduate, but it can be difficult based on your field of expertise.
The interview panel consists of two professors. The mood of the PI is calm. They'll ask you questions on your profession/ field of study. For example, You are an engineer who has worked in a manufacturing plant. You'll get questions on turbines, rotors, fluid dynamics, heat exchangers, etc.
They ask current affairs questions as well. You may be asked about the MBA domain you wish to pursue at IIM Shillong. Some of the questions may be out of the syllabus. For example, my brother did his engineering from NIT Bhopal. So he was asked a question on the Bhopal Gas Tragedy as well.
The GD and PI last for around half an hour in total. The PI isn’t difficult, but it is fast-paced and straightforward. You won't be expected to know every question. But your answers must be well thought out. If you give the interview and GD with confidence, there’s a high chance of you converting to IIM Shillong.
Which IIM will be better to accept, IIM Shillong, Ranchi, or Raipur?
- IIM Shillong - This institute is known for its beautiful campus and top-notch facilities. It offers a great learning environment that provides students with a sense of community and belonging. Additionally, the institute has a strong reputation for its placements, making it a popular choice among students.
- IIM Ranchi - This institute is comparable to IIM Shillong in terms of placements, but has its own set of constraints. Currently, the institute is operating from a temporary campus, which can be a limiting factor for students. Commuting to classes can take up a significant portion of the student's day, and the lack of a permanent campus can also affect the nightlife and freedom of the students.
- IIM Raipur - This institute is considered the slowest to build its own campus. This can be a significant drawback for students as it limits the overall campus experience.
Which IIM will be better to accept IIM Shillong, Ranchi or Raipur?
Many of my students attend IIM programs in Shillong, Ranchi, and Raipur each year. While the placement outcomes at IIM Shillong and Ranchi are similar, the campus at IIM Shillong is more attractive and students at IIM Ranchi must spend an hour commuting to classes every day.
Additionally, the lack of a campus at IIM Ranchi may limit the ability to participate in a vibrant social scene. Therefore, IIM Shillong may be a better choice for those who value the campus learning experience.
IIM Shillong or IMI New Delhi? In terms of recognition in the US. PS: IMI has AMBA accreditation?
In terms of seniority, IMI New Delhi has more experience. The college has been around since 1981 while IIM Shillong is a newly established business school and also commonly known as one of the new IIMs.
Ranking and Accreditation
- IMI New Delhi has AMBA accreditation which implies that the college follows international standards.
- These accreditations are hard to acquire and maintain. With these, the quality of the programme offered at the college is good and relevant.
- AMBA accreditation means that the college can hold student exchange programmes with some of the top universities in the world.
- As far as Indian ranking is concerned, IMI New Delhi was ranked 28 by the NIRF for Management while IIM Shillong was ranked 30 by the same institution.
In terms of recognition in the US, both colleges have the same reputation and recognition abroad. While business schools like IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore and IIM Calcutta overshadow all the other business schools in the US.
Both IMI New Delhi and IIM Shillong have more or less the same reputation and recognition abroad while the former has AMBA accreditation as well. However, IIM A-B-C are well-known and respected more than these 2 institutions.
