What should a first year btech student do in SVNIT?
Here is some advice based on my personal experience-
- Hostel- Even if you are a local, opt for the hostel. The experiences gained from hostel life are very important, and most of the unforgettable memories are made in this very space.
- Explore the campus- The SVNIT campus is mesmerizing and thrilling at the same time. Make sure to explore it well, and do capture pictures of the beautiful peacocks that roam around.
- Clubs and Student Chapters- Do not hesitate from joining a club or student chapter. Those are the best places to develop or polish your skills. At these clubs, you’ll meet some wonderful people and get the chance to learn from them.
- Communicate with people- Initiate conversations with your batchmates and seniors. Some people are better teachers than books.
- Limit your internet usage- Do not spend the entire day in your hostel room just for the sake of free and high speed internet. Even if you are purposefully surfing the internet, make sure to limit your screen time. Always prioritize offline interactions and activities over online ones.
- Pointers- Despite what others might tell you, getting good pointers is important for your future. If you are not getting high grades, make sure to be an achiever in extracurriculars, or learn some skills exceptionally well to make up for your lack of academic success.
These are just some of my insights as a former student of SVNIT. Work hard and enjoy to the fullest.
Should I take NIT Surat for mechanical engineering or BITS Goa for an MSc in maths?
There are different viewpoints for the same question. It primarily depends upon what is best for you, and whether or not the course you are willing to take interests you.
One of my friends encountered a similar problem likewise, and addressing the same, here are some points you might want to consider before diving into any conclusion,
- A dual degree in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry is claimed as a part of Science, while others are considered in the case of Engineering. You will learn the theories of science instead of the application of technology.
- In Mathematics, you are supposed to learn the series of higher-order and their respective application. While, in Mechanical Engineering, you will learn more deeply about Engines, Boilers, Automobiles, Refrigerator Systems, and much more.
- A single degree, like Mechanical Engineering, CSE, EE, Civil Engineering, or Chemical Engineering, can be more advantageous than dual degrees.
- If you opt for a dual degree in Mathematics, you have a higher probability of becoming a mathematician or a professor. But, in case you pursue Mechanical Engineering from NIT Surat, then you bear higher chances of securing a placement offer at top-tier MNCs.
- Your choice should always remain ahead of most others. The one piece of advice is that in NIT Surat, you supposedly cannot change your degree from M.Sc to B.Tech following the 1st year and vice versa.
You should research the same for BITS Goa and find whether or not the rule is similarly applicable in the institute. This is the basic difference you can find between both institutes.
How is mathematics at SVNIT?
I graduated from SVNIT some years back. During my time, the faculty and teaching methods for Math were not up to the mark.
I personally love Mathematics, which is why I opted for CSE. The time spent in studying Math at SVNIT made me realize that the teaching methodology was not good at all. During this time, I failed to learn any good Mathematical principles and applications.
The lecturers provided very few examples and cookie cutter solutions instead of explaining why an idea works and where it can be applied. The teachers expect students to mug-up theorems. Fourier Analysis is not given ample time, even though it is the crux of all modern technology and data analysis techniques.
The exams can be easily cleared by learning all the solutions from certain books, instead of using one’s conceptual knowledge and math skills. I would recommend you go through B. S. Grewal. It helped me understand important concepts like ODEs and the Taylor Expansion. Math-III is totally focused on three theorems, and learning the derivations of each one of them.
I do not know the current state of the Mathematics department at SVNIT, but back in my days, the faculty did not try at all to improve the students’ concept building. Thus, if you are really passionate about Math, the department might disappoint you.
How is mathematics at SVNIT??
Mathematics at SVNIT is not great. According to my sister studying there, the teaching way is not good.
- In the first year, you will only be given a cookie-cutter solution instead of making you understand why a particular idea works or where it can be applied.
- In the fourth semester, your time will be wasted by deriving basic three theorems, each four pages long. You would be expected to do rote learning.
- Even though Fourier Analysis is the crux of all modern technology. Data analysis techniques are parallel to PCA in many ways. Not more than a week is dedicated to it.
- Former students were advised to buy a book by Kachot which is full of errors and to just rote learn all the questions and get full points on the exams.
- A better book by B. S. Grewal can help you to understand concepts like ODEs and the Taylor Expansion.
- The test just includes the derivations of the three theorems. If you had not memorized the theorems, in no way, the paper could be completed on time.
The Mathematics Department is very disappointing. The lecturers do not teach well and they barely understand the material themselves. They are also quite lazy about their responsibilities towards their students.
How can I get admission into SVNIT Surat?
SVNIT is an Institute of National Importance and admissions to the B.Tech program at the institute are done through JEE Mains and Advanced examinations followed by JoSAA counseling procedures. If you have a home state quota that is provided to students that have completed their 10+2 (Intermediate) Education from Gujarat, it will be beneficial.

Which college should I choose for CS between IIIT Delhi, IIIT Allahabad, BIT Mesra and NIT Surat?
You should choose IIIT Allahabad. In terms of academics, infrastructure and placements, it is ahead of the other institutes mentioned here. IIIT Allahabad alumni network is huge. Alumni of the institute are working at the higher echelons of the industry. The networking opportunities are plenty.
IIIT Allahabad placements have been great in recent years. For placements 2022 the average CTC offered was INR 19 LPA.
Which should I choose, SVNIT Surat or MNNIT Allahabad?
As per MHRD rankings, MNNIT Allahabad is ahead of SVNIT SURAT, but one should not choose the college by the MHRD rankings. Below are some facts about both the colleges.
Placement:
- MNNIT Allahabad is way ahead of SVNIT Surat, whether its core or non-technical companies.
- MNNIT Allahabad is heaven for placements, especially for Computer Science, ECE.
- SVNIT Surat equally competes with MNNIT Allahabad when it comes to core companies.
- For Chemical engineering both are at par with each other and usually, students in chemical engineering have ample time to study other than their academics.
- The curriculum is not vast and it is a bit relaxed, so you can start coding and other kinds of stuff that interests you.

- Clubs and Fest are way better in MNNIT Allahabad than SVNIT Surat, nothing is bought out creative from students out there apart from 1 or 2 clubs.
- In MNNIT especially coding clubs, seniors will guide you nicely even if CS is not your branch. In today's world, everyone knows that coding is a must requirement regardless of your branch.
SVNIT Surat has a better location, it is placed in the heart of the city with malls, parks. It is in a posh area with hospitals, clinics, cinema halls, food outlets like McDonald's, KFC, dominos, pizza hut everything's reachable within minutes. But overall, MNNIT Allahabad is a potential choice as it is on par in every aspect.
Keeping placements in mind, out of NIT Surat and BITS Goa, which should I choose with Mechanical Engineering as a choice?
BITS Goa is much superior to SVNIT any day for placements. Although the package that you would get offered by recruiters depends upon your skills and several other important aspects such as your credentials, the marks obtained, and many more. Here is why you should choose BITS Goa over SVNIT.

Which is better SVNIT OR VIT?
Both SVNIT and VIT are very good engineering colleges and both of them have their own advantages.
- If you want a college with less strict rules, a more chill environment, fewer college fees, and an NIT tag, then you should choose SVNIT.
- If you are planning to go abroad for higher studies or a job, then you should choose VIT as you will get a lot of opportunities there. But there is a lot of competition and the college rules are very strict too.
- The campus of VIT is very beautiful and all the modern facilities are available there and you will find students here from all over the country.
- The hostels at VIT are also clean and well-maintained. There are both North Indian and South Indian food available separately at the hostel mess.
The placements of VIT are very good as it is a very popular college and all the top companies visit the campus for placements. You can easily secure a job if you possess the right skills and you prepare yourself well for the interview and be confident enough.

Should I choose SVNIT Surat or Nirma for IT?
SVNIT and Nirma University are both the top-most engineering colleges in Gujarat. But SVNIT, Surat is the better choice among the two if you are planning for IT. The reasons are shared below.
- There is less focus on practical assignments and projects in Nirma University as compared to SVNIT, Surat. The students learn the theories without any application. But in SVNIT, the students get practical exposure beyond coding and framing. There are various programs and activities conducted to keep the students engaged in the growth process.
- NIRMA University is deserted from the main city. On the other hand, SVNIT is in the heart of Surat.
- NIRMA does not offer hostel facilities to undergrads. While SVNIT has good campus facilities.
- The infrastructure of SVNIT is widespread. It has a well-equipped hostel, library, sports facility, multiple college fests, and extra-curricular, etc. SVNIT focus on the overall development of students.
- You will have better chances of finding Govt. jobs from SVNIT. The course fee is also almost half for SVNIT as compared to NIRMA University.
