If you have options to pursue an MBBS in AIIMS Bhubaneswar or JIPMER, Puducherry, which college would you prefer now?

TA

Both JIPMER and AIIMS Bhubaneswar are equally good in terms of infrastructure and academics. While JIPMER has a magnificent campus, AIIMS Bhubaneswar buildings are more modern because of recent construction. Overall, there aren't many differences between the 2 institutes. The academics, infrastructure, and hostel facilities are somewhat similar. but if I was in your place, I would have chosen JIPMER, Puducherry for UG over AIIMS Bhubaneswar. While this may surprise many, I have logical reasons to support my stance. The one solid reason why I chose JIPMER was the beauty and the places to explore.

  • The breakfast shops in Auroville
  • The Rocky Beach with moonlight shimmering on the water.
  • The Le Cafe
  • Villa Shanti
  • Villa Helena, Celine’s Kitchen, DisDis&Co, Satsunga, Le Club, Rendezvous, Villa Krish, Coromandel Cafe, and many more.
  • A pretty resort, Ocean Spray

While some might find it illogical to prefer a certain institute just because of the restaurants near it, for me it certainly is a valid point. As a medical student, it’s very important to take breaks and these beautiful places will surely take you to a different world.

However, JIPMER is suitable only for UG. For PG, AIIMS Bhubaneswar is the best option because the language barrier is a major problem in the South.

Overall, JIPMER is an excellent option for UG while AIIMS Bhubaneswar can be preferred for PG,

How is the hostel and mess facility at JIPMER?

SS
Suman Sharma Posted On : September 20th, 2023
MBBS from Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research, Pondicherry (2021)

I am an alumnus of JIPMER. Here are the details on the hostel and mess facilities at JIPMER.

Most hostels are located in the hostel complex. The male UG students get rooms in Osler House, Lister House or Intern's Boys Hostel. The Intern’s Boys Hostel is newly built and has better rooms.

Each hostel has a study room, a recreational room, and good wifi facilities. The Intern’s Boys hostel has good and spacious rooms. The hostel rooms are two seater rooms. The Intern’s Boys Hostel has attached washrooms, but Osler and Lister have common washrooms. Each hostel room has a balcony. There is a parking space behind the hostels.

There are two major messes on campus. The Common Mess offers both North and South Indian meals. Additional food items are available at cheap prices. The common mess operates till late night.

Harvey Mess serves South Indian meals only. They serve delicious chicken items that are available at cheap prices. Some external kitchens also offer mess service for students. Other than messes, the canteens (EMS Cafeteria and Lister Canteen) offer good meals at affordable prices. The food served at each of the messes and canteens is of good quality.

JIPMER offers good hostel and mess facilities overall.

Does JIPMER PG require different preparation than that of AIIMS/NEET PG?

SS

Here are some things you should know about JIPMER PG exam and related prep-

  1. Solve previous year question papers; they do play an important role.
  2. JIPMER paper has a good number of questions from previous AIIMS/NEET PG papers.
  3. The paper has a bit more concept oriented and problem-solving type questions than the NEET-PG paper, similar to the AIIMS exam. It will test how deeply you know the concepts.
  4. It is a computer based exam, so you’ll get a lot of image based questions.
  5. The JIPMER PG exam is quite difficult, so prepare well.

I hope this information will help you prepare well for the entrance.

Which is better for an MS in General Surgery: AIIMS, JIPMER or PGI?

AB

Surgery can’t be read and understood. Also, no matter the number of simulations you run through, practicing on a human body is very different.

Now, with their limited number of beds, these institutions perform complex surgeries through protocol defining procedures. As a resident at these, you won’t perform many surgeries. Also, you’ll have a limited exposure to trivial diseases. On the flip side, you’ll witness some of the best surgeons at work, and access top notch technology. To master surgery, you’ll have to become an SR at these institutions.

But at a decent government college hospital, the volume of patients is very high. As a result, you’ll be pushed into the OT. So you’ll get good practice, under proper supervision. However, at these colleges, protocols take a back seat. You’ll have to compromise with low funding as a resident at these institutions.

I would personally recommend going for a decent government college. But you should choose according to your own preferences.

Do people in AIIMS-D, JIPMER, AFMC, MAMC, VMMC, LHMC, and UCMS become egoistic?

SK

Medical students from all these colleges are quite decent. They are normal people studying at reputed institutions. I have good friends in MAMC and LHMC.

It is in fact society that puts an extra burden on these people. They are expected to be social all the time. But this expectation is very unrealistic.

It is not right to put labels on these individuals. Their busy schedule should not be confused with egoistic behavior.

Was language and food major (problems) obstacles for North Indians for an MBBS in JIPMER?

MS

Honestly, the South Indian food served in Pondicherry cannot be tolerated by North Indians for long because they are not used to the spices and the tamarind. But the bright side is, that Pondicherry has some amazing places serving North Indian and continental food.

I don't think food is a major obstacle for a North Indian MBBS student at JIPMER. Here is what the food at Pondicherry looks like.

JIPMER college

The above pic shows scrumptious Bread and Chocolate, Auroville. The restaurants in Pondicherry are amazing so food should be your last concern here.

As a North Indian, my friend faced some major language issues, especially at the time of applying for ward leave. Her worst experience was the RHC posting during her internship. She had to interact with people in rural areas who spoke a more complex version of the language.

Overall, North Indians might miss their food and interact with their locals but not regret choosing JIPMER despite that!

What is the environment of JIPMER like? How is it different from other medical colleges?

KC
Kushal Chaudhuri, Posted On : September 20th, 2023
MBBS from Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research, Pondicherry (2018)

Here are some facts about life at JIPMER-

  1. The college strictly follows a no-ragging policy.
  2. JIPMER takes discipline quite seriously. Academics is considered the second most important thing. A low attendance will straightaway lead to supplementary.
  3. The dress code needs to be followed sincerely. Boys can’t keep odd hairstyles and mustache cuts. You can’t wear open shoes to the clinics, even during hot weather.
  4. You will not be excused for a bad history taking during clinics.
  5. Among all academic activities, clinic postings are given the utmost importance. This ensures that you get ample exposure to cases.
  6. The PSM department will take you on visits to different places, from watching mosquitoes grow in the Vector Control Institute to studying villages in remote areas.
  7. Post-hospital and duty hours, you are free to do whatever you like.
  8. The hostel facility is top-notch. Hostels are completely secluded from the crowded hospital area, and ample security is provided. The hostels are at par with AIIMS Delhi hostels.
  9. You’ll enjoy midnight hostel parties and movie nights.
  10.  On Curie Day and Osler Night, the girls' hostels are open for boys, and vice versa.
  11. The college fest, Spandan, is celebrated over 7 days and nights. No classes are held during this period.

Overall, JIPMER will provide a rich environment for your professional growth. Apart from that, Pondicherry is a beautiful place which you should definitely visit upon joining this institute. Some of these experiences, I am sure, you won’t get at most other medical colleges.

What is the advantage of doing an MBBS from CMC Vellore, and how is it as compared to other premier institutes like AIIMS and JIPMER?

SS
S Jeno Sigamani Posted On : May 3rd, 2024
Christian Medical College, Vellore

As a final year MBBS student at CMC Vellore, I can offer you some insights on the benefits of joining CMC.

CMC Vellore

Here are the advantages of doing an MBBS from CMC Vellore rather than doing it at AIIMS/JIPMER -

  1. CMC Vellore receives a huge patient inflow, which is around 8000 patients per day. CMC offers a wide exposure of rare and common diseases to students during their clinical postings.
  2. The faculty is nationally and internationally renowned. The CMC teachers are devoted towards carrying out new research activities, and they are very supportive as well. But in this case, AIIMS and JIPMER are equally good.
  3. CMC follows the best protocol system among premier medical institutes in India. It offers the best patient care and a wide range of learning opportunities.
  4. The UG hostels at CMC are better than JIPMER and AIIMS. The senior-junior interaction is really good in CMC hostels.
  5. By doing an MBBS at CMC, one gets electives in foreign universities and secondary hospital programs (SHP) across India during clinical years.
  6. The internship period at CMC offers more exposure as compared to other premier medical colleges in India.
  7. CMC has a student governing body system.

CMC Vellore offers a rich exposure and plenty of opportunities to MBBS students. Getting into CMC is a great opportunity.
