AIIMS Patna Vs AIIMS Nagpur which one should I pick in USMLE prep point of view? Are there students in AIIMS Patna preparing for USMLE?

AG

Students from AIIMS, as well as State Colleges, prepare for USMLE. Medical colleges don’t help you with USMLE preparation, you have to work for it yourself.

But it does help to have batchmates and seniors who are preparing for the same. Also, a good record in extracurricular activities and research work will make for a strong application.

AIIMS Patna and AIIMS Nagpur, both have candidates preparing for their USMLE. However, AIIMS Patna was established in 2012, while AIIMS Nagpur, in 2018. Therefore, AIIMS Patna allows for more exposure and networking opportunities with seniors and alumni as compared to AIIMS Nagpur. Professors at AIIMS Patna are very encouraging in terms of research work participation by the students, and from the Batch 2020, students have to perform, in their 3rd or 4th year, one compulsory project.

Thus, AIIMS Patna has a few advantages over AIIMS Nagpur in USMLE preparation. However, at the end of the day, individual efforts and dedication are what matter the most.

Is a personal vehicle allowed in AIIMS Nagpur for an MBBS student?

AB
Advait Bettamwar Posted On : June 10th, 2023
AIIMS Nagpur

No, an AIIMS, Nagpur MBBS student is not allowed to bring his personal vehicle inside the campus except a bicycle. One can even get bicycles on rent here and even its maintenance is taken care of.

These bicycles can be carried inside the Metro also, so they are handy and convenient. AIIMS Nagpur is planning to reconsider this rule once the construction work of the campus is completed. The main reason for restricting public vehicles is to avoid accidents in construction areas.

This rule imposes no restrictions on the students commuting to and from the college as there are Bus services that pick up and drop students from the hostel and college.

Should I go for AIIMS Nagpur or PGI Rohtak?

AG
Akriti Gupta Posted On : June 10th, 2023
lives in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India

Without any doubt, PGI Rohtak is a better choice than AIIMS Nagpur. I am also mentioning some points that work in favor of my stance.

  • PGI Rohtak was established as early as 1960, while AIIMS Nagpur is a newly established college in 2018. It lacks a reputation and has less experience staff.
  • PGI Rohtal is huge and spreads across an area of 350 acres while AIIMS Nagpur has only 150 areas.
  • The clinical exposure and patient load at PGI Rohtak are way ahead of AIIMS Nagpur
  • PGI has the advantage of the State quota for PG which is lacking in AIIMS Nagpur.
  • Locals of Haryana can go to and fro their homes on weekends which is not possible for people of Nagpur.
  • Rohtak has a calm vibe with a peaceful life and friendly people were Nagpur gives the hustle-bustle vibes of a city and has a lot of pollution.
  • PGI has a huge batch size in comparison to AIIMS Nagpur meaning more competition and growth.
  • AIIMS Nagpur has a diverse student body so you might face a language barrier while PGI mostly has people from Haryana.

Although AIIMS Nagpur is growing at a fast pace it won't be able to reach the level of PGI Rohtak in the near future.

Do you recommend AIIMS Nagpur over Osmania Medical College?

DS
Divya Saraf Posted On : June 10th, 2023
Lives in Hyderabad

Osmania Medical College is a very old medical institute established in the mid-1800s and has a deteriorating infrastructure now. AIIMS Nagpur on the other hand has been established in 2012 with all modern architecture and facilities. Both the institutes have unique pros and cons and choosing one over the other means which institutes weaknesses you are choosing to overlook.

Osmania Medical College*

Pros

  • Enjoys a good reputation because of its early establishment.
  • You get help from many seniors in MBBS, MD, and MS, etc
  • Being such an old college, it has an elaborate alumni network with many experienced doctors working in India and abroad.
  • The institute holds the OSMECON, an undergraduate medical conference
  • The institute has 10 attached hospitals, for different specialties. The clinical exposure offered is excellent here.

Cons

  • The infrastructure of Osmania Medical College is horrible and the buildings are falling apart as they are old
  • No emphasis on extracurricular activities
  • Poor hostel facilities with no accommodation for students from Hyderabad. The food served in the mess and living rooms are in horrible condition.
  • Whereas in AIIMS Nagpur every student gets a single room from the beginning, very clean and brand new. Nothing to complain about there.
  • The institute lacks funding from the central government
  • No research culture here so it’s difficult for students. Planning to go to the US for residency
  • Only 15% of seats are filled through All India Quota and thus there is no diversity in the student body it attracts

AIIMS Nagpur

  • AIIMS Nagpur actively promotes research work and those interested can approach a professor. Most professors have published research publications, journals, and books and will guide you excellently.
  • A very diverse student body as it has only AIQ. The cutoff is very high so you will be surrounded by the geniuses of the country.
  • AIIMS Nagpur infrastructure is incomparable to OMC as it has been newly established and thus is equipped with modern technology.
  • AIIMS Nagpur has excellent hostel facilities with single rooms for every student, great mess food and other hostel facilities.
  • AIIMS Nagpur focuses equally on extracurriculars to ensure the holistic development of its students.

AIIMS Nagpur

Cons

  • Because of its recent establishment, the alumni network is barely existent.
  • Has no major fests or conferences held at a scale similar to OMC
  • The OPD footfall is less in comparison to well-established OMC

There is no right answer and only to find the right college for you after weighing the pros and cons.

Which one should I take for a MBBS, AIIMS Nagpur or BMCRI Bangalore?

PP
Pratik Parikh Posted On : June 11th, 2023
Lives in Bangalore

I will strongly recommend you take BMCRI Bangalore over AIIMS Nagpur. Here’s why

  • BMCRI has a record of producing NEET PG and INICET rank holders
  • BCRI is also known for producing RGUHS University toppers every year.
  • Quite a few of BMCRI are able t clear UMLE through assistance from their seniors and go abroad.
  • Owing to its early establishment, the institute enjoys a wider alumni pool than AIIMS Nagpur

Overall, BMCRI seems more lucrative in terms of prestige and experience and should be given more preference than the newly established AIIIMS Nagpur which still has a long way to go.

Does AIIMS Nagpur have South Indians, especially Tamils?

AB
Advait Bettamwar Posted On : July 1st, 2023
AIIMS Nagpur

AIIMS Nagpur, as a public institution, welcomes students from all regions of India. mostly from Telangana, Kerala, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh. Comparatively, Tamilians are fewer in number at AIIMS Nagpur. They usually opt for the Government Medical College. But it is better for them to consider AIIMS as their choice for getting more exposure and good academics in the medical field.

Which is better, AIIMS Nagpur or KEM Mumbai?

AJ
Advait Joshi Posted On : June 10th, 2023
Lives in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India

The best way to determine which is better between AIIMS Nagpur and KEM Mumbai is to analyze the pros and cons of these institutes individually and then come to a decision.

AIIMS Nagpur Pros

  • AIIMS Nagpur fees are very low around INR 5,856 fit the entire course (Mess not included)
  • AIIMS Nagpur has all the nicer menu ties and infrastructure. Some of these include a Gym, 2 indoor badminton courts, a basketball court, a volleyball court, cricket and football ground.
  • Hostel facilities are also decent with single rooms for girls and shared rooms for boys in the first year only. Every floor has a washing machine and the hostel is Wi-fi enabled
  • Excellent connectivity with the nearest metro station 3 km away
  • The academic environment is state of the art with labs equipped with modern instruments.

AIIMS Nagpur Cons

  • Being a new AIIMS, it does not have a very huge orient inflow with limited clinical exposure
  • Being located on the outskirts of the city, you can go out only during weekends
  • There is no student association and CR selection is done on the basis of marks.
  • There aren’t many shops so you will have to depend on online shopping.

KEM Pros

  • KEM is a highly regarded medical college
  • The PG of KEM is considered of high value in India
  • The college offers a vibrant city life thanks to its Mumbai location
  • There isn’t any ragging and the Bodh between seniors and juniors is strong
  • Being old, the institute has an extensive alumni base
  • The patient flow is huge because of the reputation and location of the college.

KEM Cons

  • Obviously, being in Mumbai you will have to bear a very high cost of living.
  • The fees are very high. KEM Mumbai M.B.B.S. fees are INR 5.54 L
  • There are no hostel facilities for first-year students.
  • 1-year bond with heavy internship
  • Not a good option for USMLE aspirants as there is a rule that prohibits you from leaving India for 5 years.

After weighing the above pros and cons I conclude that AIIMS Nagpur is a better option as its pros definitely overwrite the cons.

Is it best to take admission in AIIMS Nagpur or Seth GS Medical College in the year 2023?

PP
Pradnya Pande Posted On : June 10th, 2023
Lives in Nagpur

My answer is a bit biased towards GSMC as my brother is an alumnus of the same. However, I’ll try my best to justify my bias towards it.

  • AIIMS Nagpur is a newly established college whereas Seth GSMC was established in 1926. It enjoys a better reputation than AIIMS Nagpur currently.
  • As for the bond, GSMC is under the umbrella of MCGM, so you will be spared from serving the bond in a rural area and will have to serve in BMC Hospital.
  • Because of its reputation, GSMC has a better reputation than AIIMS Nagpur and people from all over the country come here.
  • GSMC has some of the most friendly seniors you could ask for. They help you in every possible way and there is no ragging at all.
  • As for USMLE, it requires guidance from seniors who have established themselves there. This is possible in GSMC because of a wider alumni base.
  • GSMC has the latest amenities with well-established departments providing the best research opportunities.
  • The MLT and LTs are now fully air-conditioned.

Ultimately, it’s best to look at the bigger picture and not focus only on the AIIMS tag. GSMC is better in terms of academics as well as reputation. No doubt, lack of hostel facilities does matter but not for someone who is ready to commit himself to the field.
