By looking at the recent trends in the Indian Economy, it can be observed that there is a lack of opportunities for Mechanical Engineering students. The demand for Mechanical and Civil engineers has dropped down and the recruitment is usually in Non-core companies. Only students from Top-Tier colleges are placed in great companies where they move on to become managers.
About the 5-year Dual degree at IIT Bhubaneshwar, the student life is good there although there are strict rules and restrictions. The average package offered at this IIT was 11.44 LPA and the highest was around 39 LPA in last year’s placement drive. The college provides for a special internship program and a summer training program.
Hostel life is good and the hostel rooms are allotted on a single room occupant basis. The food provided is decent. Faculty are very well versed with their subjects and easily approachable as they come from different IITs. the sports facility is fine and many events also take place around the year. The Labs provided are modern but insufficient if compared to other old IIT’s.
Yes, you can get internship opportunities with a CGPA of 6.9. In the past students of IIT Bhubaneswar got internships even with 6 CGPA. Companies that hire for internships usually sets the CGPA criteria to 6 or above. Other than CGPA, your skill sets will play a major role in getting an internship. So, focus on mastering different skills required by the MNCs.
IIT Bhubaneswar and IIT Mandi are both well-known institutions in the field of engineering. Both of them offer a decent B.Tech CSE course.
The good thing about joining IIT Bhubaneswar is that it has clubs and societies dedicated to robotics, web design and programming. These clubs and societies are- Robotics and Intelligent Systems Club (RISC), Web and Design Society (WebnD), and Neuromancers (The Programming Society).
Here are the previous years’ B.Tech CSE placement statistics for both these institutions:

| % Batch placed | 100 | 98 |
The placement figures for both the institutions are almost at par. According to my personal experience, IIT Bhubaneswar is a good choice for B.Tech CSE.
You can choose IIT Bhubaneswar for an MTech in Mechanical Engineering. The placement record for the branch is great. L&T ECC, Belcan, and Maruti Suzuki are some of the major recruiters of the branch. Many non-core companies take part in the placement as well.,
According to the recent highlights of IIT Bhubaneswar placements, MTech Mechanical students receive an average CTC of around INR 15 LPA.
According to the placement highlight of 2019-20, IIT Bhubaneswar witnessed two computer science students bag the highest package to date, i.e. 43 LPA. Prior to that, in the 2018-19 session, 39 LPA was the highest package offered by Adobe, with 11.44LPA being the average. The stats show that computer science students get the most attractive packages ranging between 10-35 LPA on average, as compared to other branches that are offered 10-20 LPA. The CS branch students achieved an incredible 100% placement record last year with core branches witnessing an average of 89%. Over the past few years, the college has been able to achieve an amazing placement rate, greater than 85% consistently with an average domestic package of 11 LPA. IIT-Bhubaneswar has also experienced a rise in the number of companies taking part in the hiring process offering lucrative packages, Amazon, Microsoft, Mastercard, Accenture, Adobe, Aditya Birla Group being the prominent ones. These recruiters are not only there to hire but also offer summer internships, in R&D organizations and foreign universities. PSUs like IOCL, ISRO also participate in the recruitment drives and offer respectable roles to both BTech and MTech students.
I think opting for IIT Bhubaneswar for manufacturing is a better choice than IIT ISM Dhanbad as I happen to be a student of IIT Bhubaneswar myself.

If you ask me, I think Metallurgy at IIT Bhubaneswar is better than RVCE CSE. However, it is your personal preference whether you want to opt for RVCE CSE or Metallurgy at IIT Bhubaneswar.
The Civil Engineering program offered by IIT Bhubaneswar is good in terms of facilities and placement opportunities. The School of Infrastructure (Civil) of IIT Bhubaneswar is among the oldest departments. It offers great infrastructural facilities. The professors are well-experienced and have good technical expertise.
For the past few years, the placements for Civil branch have been good. Many students were offered core job profiles in PSUs like HPCL, IOCL, as well as companies like L&T. The average CTC offered to the students is 11 LPA.
Yes, there is a good chance that you will get a seat in IIT Bhubaneswar core mechanical department. In IIT Bhubaneswar, the selection is based on 70% weightage for the GATE score and 30% weightage for the performance in the Written Test and Interview. The department has 3 main branches i.e. Design, Thermal, and Manufacturing. The cutoff is most likely to be, Design>Thermal >Manufacturing in all IITs. As design seats get filled first, then thermal and then manufacturing.
There are 18 seats for both Mechanical Systems Design and Thermal Science and Engineering in IIT Bhubaneswar. The basic eligibility criteria are 60% marks in B. Tech./B. E. in Mechanical Engineering with a valid GATE score. Although cutoff changes every year for each branch but based on last year’s record, in 2020, the expected GATE cutoff for Mechanical System Design(GEN) is 595- 605 in IIT Bhubaneswar. So, yes there is a good possibility that you will make the cut.
