What should be the preference, XLRI Jamshedpur or Delhi? Would XLRI maintain equal placements & faculties as the IIFT maintained? Can we get an educational loan for the XLRI Delhi campus?

AJ

Former Registrar at Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, Delhi (1971–2011)

When comparing XLRI Jamshedpur to the other two institutions, XLRI-Delhi and IIFT-Delhi, it is generally considered that XLRI Jamshedpur is the better option. The XLRI Delhi campus is relatively new, with its first batch starting in 2020, and the institution is working towards making it as successful as the Jamshedpur campus. However, IIFT has been able to maintain the same level of quality at its Kolkata campus as it has in Delhi and students in Kolkata have received similar placements as those in Delhi. It is hoped that the same will be true for XLRI Delhi in the future.

In terms of overall comparison, it is suggested that XLRI-Jamshedpur is better than IIFT-Delhi. However, if you are specifically comparing between XLRI-Delhi and IIFT-Delhi, it is suggested that IIFT-Delhi may be a better option. It's important to keep in mind that this order is based on personal opinion and you should conduct your own research and weigh your options before making a decision.

In a XLRI HRM program interview, do they ask why you want to make a shift to HR after having 3+ years of work experience in the IT industry?

MS
Mansi Sheth Posted On : June 28th, 2021
Studied at Xavier School of Management

This is one of the common questions asked in an MBA interview. Generally the question “Why MBA?” encompasses all these. They may twist this question slightly according to your background.

These questions are frequently asked to gauge what is your thought process behind choosing an MBA. They want to know if you have given a deep thought about it and how you can convince the interviewer.

Secondly, they want to understand why you made this choice. The work you have done to date and the career trajectory you took, how it was good for you and how doing an MBA might be a good idea for your career progression. The more concrete and personal reasons you have, the more convincing it is both for you as well as for the panelists.

So, definitely pick some good reasons from your work experience and why it convinced you to pursue MBA in the HRM program. First, convince yourself and if you can, you can definitely convince the interviewers.

Are the new IIM's good enough to compete with the older ones? Are they better than XLRI or FMS?

AB
Akriti Banerjee Posted On : May 20th, 2023
lives in New Delhi

The new IIMs still have a long way to go and it will take several years for them to reach the level of top B-Schools like XLRI and FMS. It would take them a long way to reach there. It’s only after joining a B-School, that you realize a B-School is as good as its alumni. Top B-Schools have a large alumni base occupying executive positions in top MNCs. This in turn improves the brand value of these institutes.

Additionally, there are several companies that visit only the top 4-6 B-schools for summer and finals. Once you conduct in-depth research you will realize how many CHROs & CEOs are from XL and FMS. New IIMs would have to struggle hard to reach that level. Companies have a fixed pattern for recruitment for summers and finals. They stick to the same pattern and thus visit the same institutes every year. This is exactly why companies go through the immense struggle of visiting a remotely located institute like XLRI because they are sure of its worth and credibility.

What are the best HR certifications for someone who holds a 2-year MBA degree from XLRI and has 4-5 years of experience in HR?

AS
Aradhana Sahu Posted On : June 16th, 2021
studied at Xavier School of Management

Since you already have 4-5 years of experience after pursuing your MBA, you will not require any HR certification. You can pursue the following courses and certifications for your own satisfaction. Focus on one project and program which will be beneficial for you in the future.

  1. You can try for certifications from SHRM, CIPD, DTD, ISTD, and ASTD (American Society of Training and Development).
  2. There is a Mercer Consultancy, a Japanese firm that runs various certification programs for HR professionals like HRIS and Compensation. You can have a look at them.
  3. GE also organizes project programs for its employees. It is also available for outsiders so you can have a look into them.
  4. You can also try OD consulting programs conducted by some firms.
  5. Try certification programs from XLRI and TVLRS learning systems.
  6. There are some short-term programs conducted by CCL (Centre for creative leadership), Aberdeen institute, etc. You can also check them.

You may explore the coaching, leadership development, executive development programs, and business counseling conducted by various organizations.

Is XLRI Jamshedpur at par with the top 3 IIMS (A,B,C)?

AB
Akriti Banerjee Posted On : May 5th, 2023
lives in New Delhi

XLRI is a prestigious B-school in India and is consistently ranked among the top business schools in the country. In 2022, its NIRF ranking was 8th, behind BLACKI and IIT Delhi. You should keep in mind that the criteria for these rankings may be different from what a student actually considers while selecting his preference.

Many consider it to be on par with the three renowned IIMs (A, B, C). XLRI's HR course is highly regarded. It has a batch strength of 177, ensuring a better student-to-faculty ratio, which is seen as an advantage over the IIMs. So while people’s perception may be that IIMs are better, the industry doesn’t consider it to be very far off.

Do investment banks recruit from XLRI Jamshedpur?

RG
Rimjhim Ghosh Posted On : April 25th, 2023
Studied at Xavier School of Management (2019)

They do, indeed. XLRI does not have as many IB recruiters as IIMs A, B, C, or L, but there are still plenty of them.

Internships and permanent positions in Investment Banks are available throughout the year. They are highly sought for by students who have an interest in finance and pay far above average. Only BM students are eligible to apply for the posts.
