Which is better: IIEST Shibpur CSE or IIIT Allahabad IT in terms of course content and teaching?

CK

Bachelor of Engineering Computer Science, Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur (2018)

I have a few friends at IIEST and based on what I heard I can say that conclusive developments are taking place at IIEST Shibpur for the CSE course. Projects under the supervision of esteemed faculty were introduced in the second year. The curriculum has been improved to become one of the best in India.

There are also visiting faculty from foreign universities such as Harvard and so on. At present, the faculty is working on projects worth crores.

Abroad Internships are available to CSE IIEST students as early as in the first year.

The CSE department at IIEST is now significantly better than that of top NITs. So in short, IIEST Shibpur CSE is the better alternative.

Here are some improvement ideas that can help IIEST Shibpur excel better.

  • It should work on offering better infrastructure, learning resources, laboratory facilities, and faculty similar to that of old IITs and IISc.
  • IIEST should collaborate with leading technical institutes from India and abroad.
  • Work on developing a better industry reach to provide students with better exposure and networking opportunities.
  • The institute needs an effective marketing strategy to make people aware of academic and research activities happening on campus.
  • Promote technical events and programs such as GSoC.
  • Support and encourage entrepreneurship. Improve placements.

These are the major aspects IIEST needs to work on for further growth.

Should I take the ETC dept. in IIEST Shibpur or the EE dept.? Why?

RG

The choice of the department for an engineering degree is a decision for one’s own career, which runs a lifetime. Among the above two options, it is better to choose EE than ETC, considering several factors discussed below.

  • The whole point of the choice is done keeping the college as constant, i.e. - IIEST Shibpur. Now a day, there are mass preferences and several misconceptions wherein people think about the consequences. Instead, you should consider your own capability of working on that specified stream, and how to be better at it.
  • You should go through the course structure of both the branches before choosing the stream and then make a decision. In IIEST Shibpur, both EE and ETC have an excellent reputation.
  • Electrical Engineering in IIEST has better opportunities, making use of the lectures of excellent professors of the electrical department. The laboratories of EE are a bit better than those of ETC.
  • For students in Electrical Engineering, there are chances of working in association with Civil and Mechanical Engineers, being in high profile projects. Even EE students become in-charge of National and State-level thermal grids, which is a huge position to work at.
  • For students in Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, most jobs are generally indoors, including Electronics Systems analytics, Electronics Design, etc. ETE, being close to CSE, also offers good tech giant IT jobs to students having sufficient programming knowledge.
  • For GATE aspirants, ETC students get some amount of preference due to less difficulty in the syllabus. The syllabus mostly comprises subjects from their course, but for EE, there are subjects from both electrical and electronics, which becomes a huge syllabus to cover.
  • In Electrical Engineering, the rate of change of concepts is less with years, and so the degree shell life is 40-50 years. On the other hand, for ETC, the rate of change is quite fast, having a degree shell life of about 25-30 years, or even less.

These are some points that a candidate needs to consider before making a choice in the stream for IIEST Shibpur.

How are IIEST, Shibpur's hostels and placements?

TB

IIEST Shibpur hostel facilities aren’t too good. In the first year, students are allotted four sharing rooms. The rooms aren’t in great condition. Basic facilities such as 24*7 wifi facilities are there.

IIEST Shibpur placements are great. During the 2022 placement drive, 1022 companies took part in the campus placements. Highest CTC offered during the campus placement was INR 45 LPA.

Why can't CST graduates from IIEST Shibpur match the placements and average pay packages of those from Jadavpur University?

HR

My friend is a graduate in CSE from Jadavpur University and according to his experience here are the possible reasons you might be looking for:

  • Reputation:Each and every institution has some flagship departments, which the institution is best known? for. Most of the CSE alumni of Jadavpur University tend to be highly successful. This has given JU prominence in the IT industry in terms of placement. IIEST has that same reputation for mechanical and civil as per his knowledge.

When my friend joined JU, only the ETCE branch was having the best placement. But according to recent placement statistics, IT and CSE also have reached that prominence.

  • Quality of students: Last year, the closing rank for JU CSE was 134 in the 3rd round which is quite high. This definitely proves the craze for JU CSE. As IIEST takes students only from JEE Main, it fails to get that much attention because of the top 3 NITs. On the other hand, JU is undoubtedly the best college under WBJEE, so it gets that easily.
  • Extracurricular activities: You can participate in a lot of activities like Coding Club, Science Club, Linux User Group, Hult prize, etc. This will certainly give a great platform to learn and develop new skills.
  • Helpful seniors: Seniors are very kind and you won’t be disappointed or refused any help. Some seniors also used to teach juniors on weekly basis in the aforementioned clubs.
  • Active and responsible placement cell: My friend always used to see how the coordinators and OSD Ma'am worked tirelessly just for the sake of the students. Because of them, the CSE’17 batch had an average salary of 14.696LPA. JU IT and ETCE also had a similar kind of placement.

JU has a huge alumni base which helped my friend and his peers more than one can think of. Getting contacts and recommendations made it possible to invite a lot of companies for campus recruitment.

Why is it CST and not CSE in IIEST Shibpur?

AS
Akansha Singh Posted On : April 12th, 2021
Bachelor of Engineering Computer Science, Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur (2018)

It is mainly concerned with a naming convention and there is really nothing to it. If you take a look back at the history, the Computer science departments began somewhere around 1982 at both IIEST Shibpur and IIT Bombay. Both the colleges began with different names for the same department and have stuck to it over the years.

If you are only and primarily concerned with this naming, this difference in the name will not have any effect on the course content. You can rest assured about it.

A similar instance is that of BESU Shibpur. They used to honor graduates of engineering courses and the marks they provided were in percentages. This was not the case with a lot of other premier engineering institutes like NITs or IITs where the B. Tech degree is given on the basis of the grade point system.

All these minor differences are something that you do not need to be bothered about. These will definitely not tamper with your career in any way. CST is just the same as CSE.

What should I do: get an M. Tech. degree at an NIT or IIEST Shibpur or get a job in TCS?

AA
Anubhav Agarwal Posted On : April 26th, 2023
BTech CSE, NIT Surathkal (2018)

If you believe in yourself and think that you can do well in M.Tech, then you should consider going for NIT rather than joining any company. This is because cracking the CS GATE exam is not easy and there is no guarantee that you will be able to get admission to any IIT next year. Don't waste your one year and go for M.Tech instead.

Here are some reasons why you should consider going for M.Tech at NIT:

  • Opportunities: Top NITs provide a lot of opportunities for students pursuing an M.Tech in Computer Science. There are various research projects, internships, and other opportunities that can help you grow and enhance your skills.
  • Placements: Top companies visit NITs for campus placements, and if you work hard and perform well in your M.Tech program, you can easily get good placement offers.
  • Exposure: Pursuing M.Tech at NIT will expose you to a diverse and dynamic environment, where you will get to interact with students from different backgrounds and cultures. This can help broaden your perspective and give you a holistic view of the industry.
  • Faculty: NITs have highly experienced and knowledgeable faculty who are experts in their respective fields. They can guide you and help you develop a strong foundation in computer science concepts and applications.
  • Networking: Pursuing M.Tech at NIT can also help you build a strong network of professionals and experts in the industry. This can be useful in the future when you are looking for job opportunities or collaborations.

Pursuing M.Tech at NIT can provide you with ample opportunities, good placements, exposure, guidance from experienced faculty, and a strong network.

AV
Ankita Verma Posted On : April 1st, 2021
Studied at Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur

There are several means of transportation from Sealdah Railway Station, Kolkata to IIEST Shibpur campus, located in Howrah. All transportation modes are available from the bus stop near Big Bazaar, which is just 2 minutes walking from Sealdah Railway Station.

The following points below state the possible and easily accessible modes of transport.

  • There is a direct, white-colored bus, named “Beleghata –B garden”. There are buses every half an hour, which start at Beleghata, which is close to Sealdah and goes till B-garden. The route of this bus is through Vidyasagar Bridge, or commonly known as the second Hoogly bridge. It will drop you just in front of IIEST Shibpur.
  • There is another option by breaking bus routes. People can take any bus towards Howrah, from Sealdah. From Howrah, there are several buses that go to college ghat. After reaching college ghat, it is just a two-minute walk to the IIEST campus.
  • Other than the above two, there is the easiest option, which is taking a direct cab to IIEST Shibpur. It may cost around Rs. 200, depending upon cab surges.

These are the options to reach the IIEST campus located in Shibpur, Howrah, from Sealdah Railway Station.

Is the hostel in IIEST Shibpur mandatory?

HS
Harshita Sinha Posted On : March 14th, 2021
B.E from Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur (2020)

No. It is not mandatory. The college allows you to have full freedom on whether you want to live in the hotel or outside. If someone has a problem with hostel life he/she can stay outside. But if you do not take hostels for a year you are going to miss a lot of things in life.

The main crux of college life lies in a hostel and it is better to join the hostel for the first 2 years. Also, it is easier to maintain the 8–5 classes from hostels and after the whole day tiring classes you can hang with your friends, play on the two grounds or go to the gym.
