Honestly, the academic environment of the ECE branch at NIT Trichy is deteriorating day by day. One of my friends, an ex-student of NIT Trichy, brought light to this matter. He told me that the labs are more focused on report writing than actual work. The exams conducted are based on rote learning and not testing the concepts of the students. They are expected to mug up the concepts even if they haven’t understood them and score good marks.
However, there are some exceptional cases of professors who are proficient in their respective fields like digital electronics, digital VLSI, signal processing, computer architecture, etc. To do projects under them, you need to have a high CGPA. The placement training sessions are also pretty good with many intellectual questions in the respective topics.
Ultimately, I will say if you are a true electronics fan then take ECE either in the new IITs or go to IIIT Hyderabad. Coming to NIT Trichy will only waste your time and money.

The hostel facilities provided in NIT Trichy are excellent. There are many hostels in this college but the best hostel for the students is the Diamond hostel.
- Diamond hostel: The facilities available inside this hostel are amazing and the ventilation available inside the rooms is top class. The hostel is located in a very good spot with the mess, canteens, and lecture halls are nearby. There are also two well-maintained rooms which are specially made to play table tennis.
There are some other hostels too inside the NIT Trichy campus which are as follows.
- Agate: The location of this hostel is excellent but there are a lot of issues with the wifi speed and the ventilation available is not good.
- Jade: This hostel is also very good and is above average in everything except for the location of the lecture rooms and the canteen is very far away from the hostel and it is a big disadvantage.
- Coral: The location of this hostel is as good as agate but the condition of the rooms inside this hostel is very poor.
Before choosing a room, do check out the wifi speed personally as slow wifi speed can be very frustrating and it consumes a lot of time while accessing the internet.

Which one to choose, lower NIT or College of engineering, Pune or DTU ?
DTU should be your priority. It is one of the oldest Indian Engineering institutions. It has a brand name and a good reputation. It has better placements, campus, college life, location, etc. than COEP. Only NIT Trichy and NIT Warangal are on par with DTU. Mechanical is a renowned branch at DTU. The Mechanical department has many innovations to its credit. For example, the first Biodiesel Lab in India.
I know someone who did his B.Tech Mechanical from COEP. He chose COEP over a top NIT. According to him, it was not a wise decision for his career. Teaching is done mostly in Marathi at COEP. Some of the faculty members are underqualified and not up to the mark. This made him lose interest in learning and resulted in poor personality development.
At NITs, you study with people from across India and this offers exposure to different cultures. The NIT brand also has its added advantages. NITs have a standard grading system known in the industry. When you graduate from COEP and go to, say IIMs, the grading system at COEP causes a lot of hassle. COEP does not offer cross-culture exposure. Though the labs at COEP are big, the equipment is outdated and non-functional.
A benefit is that COEP is located in Pune which is an automotive hub. Therefore, Mechanical students get to connect with the automotive industry. Pune automotive industry has a large number of COEP alumni. All this allows you to do a lot of live industry projects while on campus.
Overall, choose DTU and if you do not get admission into it, go for lower NITs.
