What coding language should I learn for placements at IIT Madras?
My brother is an alumnus of IIT Madras and here are some tips from him for doing well in placements.
- For the placements, the algorithms are much more important than the language. You can pick just one language like C++ or Java.
- You can learn data structures and algorithms. Various questions are asked from topics like linked lists, binary trees, queues, stacks, etc.
- It is also important to choose the language depending on the sectors that you are targeting. If you are going for analytics/data science profiles, it would be better for you to learn R and/or Python. Along with this, you need to be strong with the basics of statistics.
- If you are good at maths and know one of these languages then you are good to go.

How is internet speed in IIT Madras?
One of my cousins attends IIT Madras and according to him, the internet speed at the institute is usually good but he also experienced difficulties at times.
- Sometimes, the internet is quite good. He has experienced downloading things at a speed of about 10 Mbps. But, he says that this incident can occur only seldom and might not be the same every time you are using it.
- Sometimes, his experience went downhill. If there were any technical issues regarding the wi-fi, then it could possibly take quite a few days to finally get resolved. At times like this, he experienced the internet speed to be around 20 Kbps to 50 Kbps.
However, there is provisions of an otherwise data-sharing platform to share anything among users inside the campus. Now, it provides decent to good internet speed, depending clearly upon who is sharing at what kind of speed. Mainly, it is LAN-based.

Is doing MA from IIT Madras worth it?
MA from IIT Madras is a good course for Humanity students. The course was introduced with the aim of catering to the manpower requirements in academics. If you want a career in academics, this course will be ideal for you. IIT Madras MA placements 2022 have been good. Students received an average CTC of INR 13.98 LPA. While the highest CTC was INR 22 LPA.

The college will provide you reference for the Physics Lab. however, going through these books is not necessary as paying attention in classes and studying the teacher's notes is more than enough.

Biotechnology is rooted in Biology, not Mathematics or Analytics. If you are even remotely interested in Biology, you’ll easily understand the courses. Else, you’ll struggle in this branch. Biotech has a lot of opportunities in research.
IIT Madras Biotech will give you some industry exposure too. You’ll get equal opportunities as other branch students for non core sectors (finance, economics, consulting, analytics, management, coding, etc.). But the opportunities are very limited for core jobs.
Which is better, ECE at IIT Madras or ECE at IIITH?
IIT Madras does not offer B.Tech ECE. Instead, it offers B.Tech in Electrical Engineering. The Electrical Engineering department is one of the oldest at IITM.
- Electrical Engineering at IIT Madras: Students in the Electrical Engineering department of IITM secure an admission to top universities like Stanford, UCB, Harvard, Georgia Tech, and The University of Michigan. The highest package offered to Electrical Engineering students of IITM during 2023 placements was INR 68.5 LPA, and the median package is INR 35.89 LPA.
- B.Tech ECE at IIIT H: ECE at IIIT Hyderabad revolves around signal processing. It also includes applied areas such as computer vision and speech, communications, VLSI/embedded systems, robotics, IoT, etc. The highest package offered to B.Tech ECE students of IIIT H was INR 45 LPA during the 2023 placements. The average package for the same year was INR 27.24 LPA for B.Tech ECE.
Both these institutions are highly reputed in the field of engineering, and they offer equally good academics and placements. But I would recommend you opt for Electrical Engineering at IIT Madras since it has a bigger brand name and a richer legacy. Moreover, Electrical students at IITM receive even better packages as compared to ECE students at IIIT Hyderabad.
Which should one choose for studying, IITM or IIIT Hyderabad for CSE?
One of my friends has completed both his Bachelor’s and Master’s in CS from IIIT Hyderabad and still suggested his younger brother go for IIT Madras.
He feels that IIIT Hyderabad certainly gives you an edge in getting placed initially but it restricts your prospects to a large extent. IIT Madras on the other hand gives a wider perspective and scope. Students get to learn specifics in their sub-field.
The lab facilities offered at both institutes are equally good. However, you can join as an intern/RA later in any of these institutes. So this affects the research edge in specific areas. IIT Madras seems to have better research options mainly because of its huge size.
Outside life shouldn’t be a problem in either institute because both are excellently located and offer a great urban life. So look at the vegged picture and choose wisely!
