New Delhi: Rama University, Kanpur recently took the BTech and BSc students of the Department of Biotechnology on an insightful academic tour on March 22, 2024. The faculty and students visited the Fragrance and Flavor Development Center (FFDC) in Kannauj. The Rama University Faculty of Engineering & Technology organized the trip.

The tour was organised to help Rama University students understand how various fragrances and flavours are developed and used in various industries, including food and beverage, agriculture, and perfumery. It highlighted the use of biotechnology and biotechnological tools in various industries.

Rama University Academic Tour: Major takeaways for students

During the tour, FFDC employees demonstrated the use of various analytical instruments that check and improve the quality of fragrances and flavours. Rama University students were briefed about the analytical processes of Gas Chromatography and Mass Spectroscopy for perfume quality control. 

The students also understood how the aroma compounds are extracted, and went through the processes of steam distillation, hydrogenation, fractionation, etc. to make a finished product.

This academic tour emphasised on the practical knowledge of the biotechnical aspects of perfumery. During the tour, students also learned about agricultural technology (agritech) and its use in cultivating and improving the quality of crops used for perfumes or medicinal purposes. Rama University students could also visit the FFDC’s plant tissue culture laboratory and learn more about the biotechnological aspects of plant cultivation and optimized perfume harvesting.
