Osmania University to Award 500 PhD Degrees, Making A Total 2,700 PhDs in Over Two Years

New Delhi: A record-breaking total of 2700 PhDs will be awarded by Osmania University (OU) by the end of 2024. Many students of PhD program at OU have overstayed the six-year tenure awarded to PhD students. Some of these students enrolled as early as the 2011-13 intake.

OU has been methodically clearing this backlog of PhD students over the past 2.5 years. Since November 21, 2021, OU has awarded 2,200 PhDs. Another 500 PhDs will soon be added to that number.

This is also being done so that OU can welcome new admissions in 2024. The issue of the PhD backlogs was spotted by OU Vice Chancellor Prof. D. Ravinder.

Prof. Ravinder said, “Scholars who enrolled in 2011-2013 continued till 2021. This barricaded the new scholars. UGC regulations also insisted on following the regulations of four years to full-time and five years to part-time candidates. Due to various other reasons, the guides were allotted more scholars.”

After he realized the issues, Prof. Ravinder then brought it to the attention of Prof. C.P. Vardhani, the first female Additional Controller of Examinations. A standing commission was formed after this revelation. The PhD students were given one last chance to finish their research project or cancel their enrollments.

Speaking about the speed of processing since the commission was established, Prof. Vardhan said, “It’s an amazing achievement for Osmania University. In a short period from November 21, 2021, till date producing 2200 PhDs… in a couple of days, another 500 will be receiving their PhDs.”
