NIT Rourkela has announced the launch of four new academic programs starting from the 2026-27 academic session to strengthen interdisciplinary education and prepare students for emerging technology sectors. These programs are designed to address growing industry demand in artificial intelligence, semiconductors, quantum technologies, and advanced manufacturing.

The initiative aligns with the goals of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and aims to promote multidisciplinary learning and research-driven innovation. According to Dean Academic Prof Ashok Kumar Turuk, these programs will position NIT Rourkela as a research and innovation hub in advanced areas of science and engineering. The new offerings reflect the institute's commitment to providing cutting-edge education in deep-tech fields that are crucial for India's technological advancement.

BTech in Mathematics and Computing

This program offered by the Department of Mathematics will include subjects such as machine learning, artificial intelligence, cryptography, statistical modelling, and advanced computing. The inaugural batch will admit 25 students through JEE Main. This program is ideal for students interested in combining mathematical foundations with computational skills to solve real-world problems in AI and data science.

BTech in Engineering Physics

The Department of Physics and Astronomy will offer this program focusing on semiconductor devices, quantum technologies, photonics, nanotechnology, and space technology. Admissions will be conducted through JEE Main with an intake of 25 students. This program prepares students for careers in emerging fields like quantum computing, advanced materials, and space technology.

MTech in Semiconductor Devices and Technology

NIT Rourkela has introduced this MTech program amid increasing demand for skilled professionals in India's semiconductor sector. The program will cover semiconductor fabrication, wafer technology, device characterisation, and packaging technologies. The inaugural batch will admit 15 students through GATE. This program is crucial for India's goal of becoming self-reliant in semiconductor manufacturing.

MTech in Machine Learning and Signal Analysis

Offered by the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, this program will focus on deep learning, image and speech processing, autonomous systems, and biomedical signal analysis. The first batch will include 12 students through GATE admissions. This program prepares students for careers in AI, robotics, healthcare technology, and autonomous systems.

Eligibility and Admission Process

For BTech programs, candidates must have passed Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Admissions are through JEE Main scores. For MTech programs, candidates must have a BTech degree in relevant fields. Admissions are through GATE scores.
