NIT Rourkela Doctorate Admission 2026 Ongoing Till May 11

National Institute of Technology (NIT) Rourkela has invited applications for PhD admission to the Autumn 2026-27 semester. Online applications are being accepted till May 11, 2026 for various engineering, science, and management disciplines. The entrance test and interview will be conducted on June 4, 2026 at NIT Rourkela campus in offline mode. Candidates can submit their applications through the online portal at eapplication.nitrkl.ac.in. Admission will be given preferably to applicants eligible for institute fellowship or those who have qualified for external fellowships like NET-JRF.

NIT Rourkela offers PhD programs across 20 departments including Biotechnology and Medical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and others. Each department offers diverse research areas aligned with current industry and academic needs. The institute welcomes candidates with strong academic backgrounds and research interests. Eligibility Criteria for PhD Admission

Candidates must have ME/M.Tech/M.Sc Engineering/M.Pharm/M.Arch/M.Plan/M.Des with at least 6.5 CGPA or 60% marks. Alternatively, candidates with BE/B.Tech/B.Sc Engineering/M.Sc/B.Pharm/MCA/B.Arch/B.Des with CGPA 7.0 or 65% marks are eligible. M.Sc in Basic Sciences with CGPA 7.0 or 65% marks in relevant disciplines is also acceptable. Candidates with valid GATE/NET/GPAT scores may get relaxation of maximum 0.5 CGPA or 5% marks. MBBS/B.V.Sc with CGPA 6.5 or 60% marks are eligible for specific programs. Specific eligibility criteria vary by department and research area.

Departments & Research Areas

Biotechnology and Medical Engineering offers research in biomechanics, biomaterials, tissue engineering, and bioprocess engineering. Civil Engineering provides specializations in geotechnical, structural, transportation, and water resources engineering. Chemical Engineering covers catalysis, energy storage, process systems, and sustainable energy. Computer Science & Engineering offers AI/ML, IoT, blockchain, cloud computing, and cybersecurity. Electronics & Communication Engineering provides wireless communication, RF/radar, VLSI, and photonics. Electrical Engineering covers power systems, power electronics, renewable energy, and control systems. Mechanical Engineering offers machine design, thermal engineering, and fluid mechanics. Additional departments include Mathematics, Physics & Astronomy, Chemistry, Life Sciences, and Management.

Financial Support & Fellowship

Institute fellowships are available for PhD students with valid GATE/NET/GPAT scores. First and second year fellows receive INR 37,000 per month. Third, fourth, and fifth year fellows receive INR 42,000 per month (subject to clearing progress seminar). Fellowship is not awarded to candidates above 32 years of age (35 years for SC/ST and women candidates) on the application closing date. Candidates with external fellowships like CSIR-NET/UGC-NET/DST-INSPIRE are encouraged to apply. Fellowship payment begins from enrollment date or biometric attendance date, whichever is later.

Fee Structure for PhD Program

Admission fee is INR 2,500 (one-time). Tuition fee is INR 7,500 per semester (nil for SC/ST students). Other fees including examination, library, and electricity are INR 3,000 per semester. Student activity fee is INR 2,000 per semester. Medical fee is INR 2,000 per semester. Hostel seat rent is INR 5,000 per semester. Caution money is INR 10,000 (one-time refundable). Hall establishment fee is INR 5,000 per semester. Mess advance is INR 30,000 per semester. Total first semester fee is INR 67,000 (INR 59,500 for SC/ST). Second semester onwards fee is INR 54,500 (INR 47,000 for SC/ST).

Enter SB Collect Reference Number in the "Update Application Fee Details" link. Submit the application form. Application number is generated on successful submission. Sponsored candidates must submit scanned sponsorship certificate. Hard copy submission is not required initially but will be needed if called for interview.
