NEET UG 2027 to Shift to Computer Based Test Mode; NTA Seeks AICTE Help to Identify Exam Centres

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has approached the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) for support. It wants AICTE to identify government colleges that can host Computer Based Test (CBT) centres. These centres will run the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET UG) 2027 exam.

NEET UG will move from pen and paper mode to CBT format from 2027. This follows the paper leak controversy of early 2026. The shift is part of a broader reform of high-stakes national tests.

Why NEET UG Is Moving to Computer Based Test Mode

The 2026 edition of NEET UG faced serious disruption. The May 3 exam was cancelled on May 12 due to a paper leak. A re-examination was held on June 21, 2026.

The Centre later announced a full switch to CBT from 2027. The move aims to prevent leaks and secure the testing process. Digital delivery also allows tighter control over paper distribution.

What Infrastructure Will the Exam Centres Need?

AICTE has asked its approved government institutions to share detailed campus data. NTA will use this data to shortlist Standard Testing Centres (STCs) across the country.

The institutions must submit the following information:

• Number of functional computers available on campus
• Overall quality of IT infrastructure and hardware
• Networking facilities and stable internet connectivity
• Power backup systems for uninterrupted testing
• CCTV and security setup for exam integrity
• Vacant or underutilised space suitable for the exam

Who Can Host the CBT Centres?

NTA has been clear on one key point. CBT centres cannot be outsourced to small private players. Only AICTE approved government colleges will be considered for selection.

A senior NTA official explained the reasoning behind this rule. The centres must be chosen after strict assessment on quality parameters. Government technical colleges already hold much of the required infrastructure.

How Will the Shift Affect Medical Aspirants?

NEET UG is India's largest medical entrance examination. More than 20 lakh candidates appear for the test each year. A CBT rollout on this scale is unprecedented in Indian medical admissions.

Students will need to build comfort with on-screen test taking. Basic computer skills such as mouse use and keyboard navigation will help. Coaching institutes are expected to launch CBT style mock tests soon.

How Will Exam Security Improve Under the CBT Format?

Computer based delivery removes the risk of physical paper leakage. Question papers are pushed to centres in encrypted digital form. Each candidate can also receive a unique set of questions.

Live CCTV monitoring at the new STCs will further tighten oversight. AICTE data on campus security will feed directly into centre selection. Only campuses meeting all technical checks will make the final list.
