The Supreme Court will hear a PIL on February 13 challenging the decision to lower the NEET PG 2025 cut-off, including its reduction to very low and negative marks for certain categories.

Neet PG 2025 Lowering Cut Offs PIL Hearing On Feb 13

The Supreme Court of India will hear a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) on February 13, 2026, challenging the recent decision to lower the NEET PG 2025 cut-off to very low and even negative marks. The case questions whether allowing candidates with such low scores to qualify for counselling is fair and in line with medical education rules.

Why Was the PIL Filed?

The PIL has been filed against the decision of the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS), which reduced the qualifying percentile to:

  • Very low percentiles for the General category candidates
  • Zero percentile (negative marks) for SC, ST and OBC candidates

According to the petitioners, this move affects merit-based selection and may impact the quality of postgraduate medical education. The PIL argues that such a major change should not be made after the exam and may violate existing medical education laws.

What Has the Supreme Court Done So Far?

The Supreme Court has issued notice on the matter and asked the concerned authorities to respond. The court will now hear detailed arguments on February 13, after which it may decide whether the cut-off reduction is valid or needs to be reviewed.

Earlier, similar petitions were dismissed by High Courts, stating that cut-off decisions are a policy matter. However, since the issue affects a large number of medical aspirants, the Supreme Court has agreed to examine it.

Why Is This Issue Important for Students?

If the court upholds the PIL, the NEET PG cut-off criteria may change again, which could affect:

  • Eligibility for counselling
  • Admission chances in PG medical seats
  • Ongoing and upcoming counselling rounds

If the court rejects the plea, the current cut-off will remain applicable.

Students are advised to closely follow official updates, especially after the Supreme Court hearing, and avoid relying on rumours or unofficial information until the court delivers its final decision. The verdict is expected to be crucial for thousands of NEET PG aspirants across the country.
