The KISS Humanitarian Award is a mark of appreciation and respect for deeds of social good. The award has also been bestowed upon the Dalai Lama and Nobel Peace Laureate Muhammad Yunus.
New Delhi: Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation was bestowed with KIIT Bhubaneswar's KISS Humanitarian Award 2023 on February 28, 2024. The award was a form of recognition from the institute for all the social good that Gates’ philanthropic endeavours brought about in fighting climate change, solving health issues, and making education accessible.
The award ceremony was attended virtually by KIIT and the Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) students and alumni. The Founder of KIIT, KISS, and KIMS, Prof. Achyuta Samanta, presented Gates with the award.
Dignitaries like US Embassy Minister Counsellor Graham Mayer, Political Officer Frank Talluto, and Political Specialist for the US Consulate in Hyderabad, Srimali Kari, were also present at the occasion.
Speaking on this occasion, Prof. Achyuta Samanta said, “Awarding Bill Gates with the KISS Humanitarian Award not only honours his exceptional contributions but also elevates the prestige of this recognition. His acceptance sets a new benchmark for humanitarian work globally. It is a profound honour for us that Bill Gates is joining the esteemed roster of our awardees.”

The KISS Humanitarian Award began in 2008 as a mark of appreciation and respect for deeds of social good and upliftment. It is considered the highest recognition that KIIT and KISS can give.
The award consists of a gold-plated trophy and a citation scroll. Previous recipients include notable figures such as the Dalai Lama, Dr. Ham-Kee-Sun, President of Hanseo University, President of Mauritius Mr. Anerood Jugnauth, and Nobel Peace Laureate 2005, Prof Muhammad Yunus.
In his acceptance speech, Mr Gates lauded Prof Samanta’s work towards providing community-first, quality education in Bhubaneshwar. “I should be the one congratulating you on all you have accomplished,” he said. Gates also spoke at length about gender equality during the Q&A Session.
