What the Response Sheet and Answer Key Contain

The response sheet is a record of every option a candidate marked during the exam — question-wise, for both Paper 1 and Paper 2. It does not contain correct answers. Candidates can download it from May 21 by logging in on the official portal using their registration number and date of birth.

The provisional answer key, released four days later on May 25, lists the correct response for every question across both papers. By placing the two side by side, candidates can compute an estimated score before the final result.

JEE (Advanced) 2026 Marking Scheme — Standard Rules

The exact marking scheme for each question type is displayed on screen before each paper begins, and IIT Roorkee reserves the right to vary it. Candidates should refer to their downloaded question paper for the question-specific marking pattern when calculating scores.

How to Raise Objections

Candidates who find an error in the provisional answer key can submit feedback through the official portal between 10:00 IST on May 25 and 17:00 IST on May 26. The submission window is fixed and will not be extended. Subject experts at IIT Roorkee review every objection before the final answer key is published.

If an objection is accepted, the corresponding answer is corrected and scores for all candidates are recalculated before results are declared on June 1. The final answer key released with the result is binding and cannot be challenged further.

Why the Two-Step Release Matters

Releasing response sheets four days before the answer key gives candidates time to recall their attempted questions and verify them against the official record. This window is critical because once the answer key is out on May 25, the objection period is only about 31 hours long.

What Happens After the Result

The final result on June 1 will determine eligibility for the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) 2026 counselling, which begins tentatively the same day at 17:00 IST. JoSAA handles admissions to IITs, NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded technical institutes.

Candidates seeking admission to B.Arch programmes at IIT Roorkee or IIT Kharagpur must also register separately for the Architecture Aptitude Test (AAT) between June 1 and June 2. The AAT is scheduled for June 4, with results on June 7.
