IIT Madras Zanzibar-Tanzania Campus To Offer BSc, MTech in Data Science and AI; Check Details Here

New Delhi: IIT Madras is all set to start the admission process for B.Sc and M.Tech courses in Data Science and AI for its zanzibar-tanzania campus. 

According to a statement made today by V Kamakoti, the director of the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Preeti Aghayalam will serve as the head of the first IIT to be constructed offshore, IIT Zanzibar. 

According to the IIT Madras director, who spoke at a news conference today, the international IIT Madras campus will initially offer 70 seats in BSc and MSc degrees in data science and artificial intelligence (AI). The academic sessions will start on October 24, 2023.

IIT Madras, which has been ranked top overall for the previous five years in a row by the Indian ministry of education's National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF 2023) has become the first Indian university to open a campus abroad.

According to him, the Zanzibar Government will support the campus administration and has donated 200 acres of land to IIT Zanzibar. He also mentioned IIT Madras as the knowledge partner.

The director stated that the land needed to build the main campus will be ready by 2026, at the earliest.

The IIT Zanzibar admissions process has already started. The institute will provide a 4-year BSc in Data Science and AI and a 2-year MSc in Data Science and AI as two full-time academic degrees.

In the upcoming two years, it also intends to launch three new undergraduate curricula.

Agribusiness-focused academic programmes and an MTech in cyber-physical systems are also probably on the horizon.

According to the fee schedule, candidates who want to enrol in IIT Zanzibar's UG programmes must pay 12,000 USD annually, and those who want to enrol in PG programmes must pay 4,000 USD, not including hostel costs.

Students will be chosen based on their performance on a screening test created by IIT Madras faculty experts and during an interview session.

Why Zanzibar?

IIT-M director Kamakoti went on to explain why the organisation chose Zanzibar, Tanzania, as the location for its first offshore campus: "There are three crucial things. Their administration showed excellent attention, and they responded quickly. Africa is a significant region, and the educational system there is excellent. We have faith in our ability to attract quality students.

The goal of the "IIT Madras for all" campaign was to boost the gross enrollment ratio (GER). By 2035, "we want to raise the GER to 15%," he declared.

The institute also has plans to establish a research park similar to the one at IIT Madras. India's first university-based research park is the current IIT Madras Research Park (IITMRP). It aims to create a knowledge and innovation ecosystem where academics and business leaders may work together with cutting-edge technology to incorporate and apply new information to real-time goods or services.

IIT Madras on international ranking

IIT Madras has maintained its top spot in the NIRF Rankings 2023 for five years running and has been ranked first in the engineering area for eight years running. However, Kamakoti said that owing to a "new sustainability parameter and some miscommunication, we were unable to achieve the top 200 ranking in international ranking."

"Industrialization is the main focus, but it has an effect on the number of parents. Additionally, the focus of IIT Madras' translational research is distinct from that of worldwide rankings. We don't want to alter our plans because of our ranking," he declared.
