IIT Madras To Set-Up First Overseas Campus in Tanzania

New Delhi:  Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras is all set to inaugurate its first overseas campus in Zanzibar, Tanzania. Classes are planned to begin by October 2023 with a batch of 50 undergraduate and 20 postgraduate students.

IIT Madras will offer artificial intelligence and data science courses in the beginning. Earlier, a team of five members from the institute had visited Tanzania and held meetings with various officials about the opening of the new campus.

“This would be the first IIT to be set up in Africa and can be instrumental in growth and nation building of not only Tanzania but of the continent," Binaya Pradha, High Commissioner of India, Tanzania, has tweeted in February, during the delegation's visit.

The new offshore campus has been named IIT Madras at Zanzibar. Zanzibar will be one of three campuses outside of India, with the others located in Abu Dhabi and Kuala Lumpur. Each of these campuses is designed to serve its respective region, with Zanzibar serving the greater East African region, The Citizen, a Tanzanian Daily, reported.

Zanzibar offers both tranquillity of a relatively small town, allowing students to maintain focus on their studies, and access to the rich Swahili culture, which would enrich their experiences, the report added.
