IIT Kanpur PhD/MS Research Admission 2026; Apply by November 10

Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) has opened its PhD and MS (By Research) admission portal for Semester II (2025-26). The application window is active from October 21, 2025 (2:00 PM) and will remain open until November 10, 2025 (2:00 PM).

Interested candidates can apply for Phd courses such as Phd in Engineering and Design, PhD in Sciences, Phd in Cognitive Sciences, PhD in Humanities and Social Sciences, and Master's in M.Tech, M.Des, and MS ( By Research). Check out the full range of courses on the official website iitk.ac.in.

The Application Fee is INR 500 for General / EWS / OBC / OBC-NCL candidates, INR 250 for SC / ST / DAP candidates, and no fee for Foreign Nationals. The fees are non-refundable. Candidates must use their registered email ID for all future correspondence.

IIT Kanpur PhD/ MS Research Eligibility Criteria 2026

For Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), a Master’s degree in the relevant area with marks/CPI not below the specified minimum OR a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Science (4-year) with 75% marks / 7.5 CPI and a valid GATE. GATE waived for B.Tech/BS from CFTIs, IITs, NITs, IISERs, etc.

OR

A Master’s degree in Science/Arts/Commerce with 65% / 6.5 CPI, first division in Bachelor’s, + valid GATE/JRF/NET/CAT/GMAT/CEED.

IIT Kanpur also provides Waivers for students, such as GATE/JRF/NET waived for Master’s degree holders from IITs/IISERs/NITs/CFTIs with 8.0 CPI.

For MS Research, students need to meet the following criteria;

Bachelor’s (Engineering 4-year Science) or Master’s (Earth Science and related areas) with required marks.

Valid GATE required, except: B.Tech/BS from IITs with 6.5 overall CPI and 8.0 CPI in the last 2 years. For MS Cybersecurity, the GATE has been waived for sponsored/part-time/external candidates. Final-year students completing their degree by January 5, 2026, are also eligible to apply for provisional admission. Candidates employed in industry, academia, or research organisations may apply under the Sponsored, External, or Part-Time categories.

Applicants must complete the online application process in five simple steps:

• Step 1: Register yourself on the official Application admission portal.

• Step 2: Verify your registered email ID.

• Step 3: Fill out the online application form carefully with accurate details.

• Step 4: Pay the prescribed application fee through the online payment gateway.

• Step 5: Submit the completed application form and keep a copy for future reference.

Applications must be submitted online only via the official IIT Kanpur admission portal (“Apply Online” link on the institute website). Each programme or department requires a separate application form. All non-sponsored PhD and MS (By Research) students will receive an Institute Assistantship/Scholarship as per IIT Kanpur norms. Reservations for EWS, SC, ST, OBC(NCL), and DAP categories apply as per Government of India norms.
