IIT (ISM) Dhanbad is witnessing a significant rise in student placements, with the IT sector taking the lead amongst the other recruiting sectors.

New Delhi: Earlier, in 2016, the Indian School of Mines underwent a transformation into IIT Dhanbad. Following that, the institute experienced fluctuations in its placement statistics. In the academic year 2019-20, a total of 756 students took part in placements, with 537 of them (71.03%) successfully securing placements.
In the following year, 2020-21, the number of participating students during the IIT ISM Dhanbad placements increased to 784, resulting in 555 undergraduate students being placed in various top-notch companies. However, the placement percentage slightly declined from 71.03% to 71%.
In the academic year 2021-22, there was a significant boost in the placement percentage, reaching an impressive 88%. This coincided with an increase in the number of students placed, with 716 out of 811 participants from the UG four-year programs securing placements.
However, there was a slight dip in the IIT ISM Dhanbad placement percentage for the 2022-23 batch, standing at 85.53%, with 662 out of 774 students finding placements.
Remarkably, since 2019, the IT sector consistently dominated placement shares. In 2019-20, it accounted for 28.3% of placements, which increased to 32% in 2020-21. Subsequently, it dipped to 23% in 2021-22 but rebounded to 26% in the most recent placement season.
Coming in a close second in terms of sector-wise placement distribution is the core sector. In the academic year 2020-21, it constituted 25% of placements, followed by 14% in 2021-22, and a resurgence to 24% in 2022-23. However, in 2019-20, it was the finance sector that held the second position with a 18.87% share.
IIT Dhanbad, originally established by the British Indian Government, operates as a public technical university. It was modeled after the Royal School of Mines in London and was formally inaugurated on December 9, 1926, by Lord Irwin, who served as the Viceroy of India at the time.
