IIT Bombay and Jindal Stainless to Set Up Prestigious Chair Professorship

New Delhi: Jindal Stainless announced a collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay on October 6, 2023, to establish a Chair Professorship to support research and innovation in industrial processes and product technologies in the stainless steel sector.

The distinguished chair would be offered to an existing and eminent professor of IIT Bombay with an exceptional track record of research activities. The first chair professor will be chosen from IIT Bombay's Department of Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science.

"We have decided to establish a Chair Professorship to enhance awareness among students and industry, thereby contributing to the growth of stainless steel usage in the country," stated Abhyuday Jindal, Managing Director of Jindal Stainless.

"This Chair professorship builds on that commitment by encouraging additional steel metallurgical innovation and research. Our goal is to establish new benchmarks for long-term and sustainable infrastructure. Collaboration with a reputable institute like IIT Bombay will surely assist us in achieving these objectives," he further said.

Jindal Stainless is committed to expanding industry-academia partnerships with the overarching goal of creating a corrosion-free India. The company also has a program for training fabricators and railway wagon workshops on better welding procedures for stainless steel.

Currently, the corporation is collaborating with IITs, National Institutes of Technology (NIT), and polytechnics to include stainless steel as an elective course in their curriculum.

Speaking on the initiative, IIT Bombay Director Subhasis Chaudhuri said, "As the Chair will use the existing knowledge base and support academic work and pioneering research in this domain, this is an excellent opportunity to advance R&D in the stainless steel space."
