IIM Mumbai to Undergo Major Transformations, Says Director Manoj Tiwari; Check Details Here

New Delhi: According to Director Prof. Manoj K. Tiwari, a lot would change for this newly christened IIM-Mumbai, from establishing a "brand value" to changing "perception" and recruiting the "best talent pool" from all across the country.

IIM Mumbai, formerly known as the National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE), officially became the 21st IIM after the Union government revised the IIM Act 2017. Since all of the current IIMs were recently founded institutions, it is the first such action for the country's Top B-schools.

The IIM Mumbai will soon admit students from all backgrounds; previously, it was only accessible to engineering graduates. Admission to IIMs is determined by the CAT.

In 2019, Professor Tiwari, who is a specialist in supply chain management, was appointed director of the institute. He discussed how the IIM label will alter public opinion of the institution, and attract the brightest staff and students from around the nation.

It will further increase IIMs reputation by awarding MBA degrees rather than diplomas. He stated that the institute, which is commemorating its diamond jubilee year, is eager to live up to its new name.

IIM Mumbai Upcoming Initiatives

In addition to a host of other benefits, like improved funding and access to the greatest talent in India, IIM Mumbai will increase the value of our brand. Every year, the institute receives several applications from students—including those from IITs—who either decide not to enroll or transfer to other management schools.

Professor Tiwari shared that IIM Mumbai intends to draw outstanding performers from all over, and if necessary waive the registration price for participants from rural and underprivileged areas. Additionally, the institute wants to increase the proportion of female students to at least 35% in the first several years and eventually to 50%.

Additionally, it will aid in bridging the management and engineering divide. Before, we only received applications from people who wanted to attend NITIE. Now that we are an IIM, we will receive applications from people in all 50 states, and our talent pool will undoubtedly grow, Professor Tiwari added.

Obstacles to Overcome to Develop as an IIM

There are several formalities and a change in nomenclature in all documents at first. Additionally, since IIMs accept applications from graduates of any stream, the institute will need to modify the admissions standards and create infrastructure to raise the number of students.

Professor Tiwari shared that our current student intake is roughly 550 throughout our three programs, but that number could increase to about 600 starting in the following academic year depending on the conclusion our Board makes.

The first week of October is when we want to hold our first Board meeting. Rather than offering diploma courses, we will instead offer three full-time (two-year) management curricula. The MBA (general), MBA (sustainable), and MBA (operations and supply chain management) programs will begin in the 2024–25 academic year, he added.
