Fellowship Program in 7 IIMs Equivalent to PhD Degree, says Education Ministry; Check Details Here

New Delhi: Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) the Ministry of Education has declared that the Fellow Program in Management (FPM) offered by seven IIMs is now deemed equivalent to a PhD degree. 

As per the circular issued by the Union Education Ministry, the fellowship program in management is equivalent to a PhD degree awarded by recognised Indian universities. The ministry clarified that the degree is also recognized for "higher-level positions and roles" within the central government.

According to the curricular “In view of certain references regarding the Fellow Program in Management (FPM) offered in the field of Management Education by Indian Institutes of Management (llMs), this is to clarify that this program is equivalent to the PhD (Doctoral) degree awarded by recognized Indian University for the purpose of employment to superior posts and services under the Central Government in the appropriate field.”

Now in total, there are seven IIMs in the country that offer doctoral degrees. IIMs include IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, IIM Calcutta, IIM Lucknow, IIM Kozhikode, IIM Indore and the newly upgraded IIM Mumbai.

After the enactment of IIM Act of 2017, the other IIMs have the authority to offer doctoral degree programs. The FPM is a comprehensive, full-time doctoral program focusing on intensive research in fields such as economics, public policy, finance, and accounting, among others. Students are anticipated to finish the program within a five-year timeframe. 

While the PhD programs at IIM Lucknow and IIM Indore were initiated in 2005 and 2017, respectively, the premier IIMs have been administering this program since as far back as 1986. IIM Ahmedabad holds the distinction of being the first IIM to introduce the Fellowship Program in Management in 1975.
