Deakin University Inaugurates First Foreign Campus in India at GIFT City

New Delhi: Australia's High Commissioner to India, Philip Green, expressed his delight at the commencement of operations at Australia's Deakin University branch campus in GIFT City, Gujarat. It marks a historic milestone as the first foreign university to establish a campus in India, signifying the initiation of a new era in Australia-India educational collaboration.

Green stated that he takes great pride in Deakin University, GIFT City being the pioneer in establishing a campus in India, marking the start of a promising chapter in their educational ties.

Green remarked that over the past 30 years, Deakin University has made a significant impact in India, investing across various realms of higher education. This includes collaborations in research with IITs, the establishment of a joint center highlighting nanotechnology and sustainability with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), and the implementation of the Global Job Readiness program in partnership with the National Skill Development Corporation, aimed at equipping young Indians with essential skills.

The inauguration of the campus represents the next phase in Deakin University's enduring strategy to contribute to India's future through sustained investments, Green said.

Earlier, in 2023, Australia welcomed over 122,000 Indian students, equipping them with qualifications for global careers. The inauguration of Deakin University's campus in India now allows a greater number of Indian students to access Australian education without the need to travel abroad. The release expresses Australia's excitement of extending this opportunity to even more Indian students in the future.

The Australian High Commissioner highlighted that the inauguration is a testament to the excellence of the Australian education system, India's forward-looking education policies, and the strong and cordial relations between the two nations.

Looking ahead to 2024, there is excitement about celebrating the opening of the second foreign branch University of Wollongong in GIFT City, further strengthening Australia's educational presence in India.

The inauguration took place with the 10th Edition of Vibrant Gujarat, where High Commissioner Green is spearheading a robust 90-member delegation, featuring representatives from 36 Australian universities.

During this event, Vice Chancellor Iain Martin of Deakin University in Australia engaged in a fruitful discussion with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Gandhinagar. The focus was on strengthening collaboration between government and academic institutions, particularly in the realm of cybersecurity. In a social media post, the Prime Minister extended a warm welcome to Deakin University, encouraging collaboration with Indian universities to foster research and innovation.

Martin revealed that during their conversation, the Prime Minister delved into the future of education, skill development, and research in India, with a clear emphasis on the three-decade presence in the country.
