The Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI) has announced the details for its 2025-26 admission cycle. CMI offers various BSc (Hons), MSc and PhD programs. Applications for admission to these courses will commence from March 1 through the institute’s official website (cmi.ac.in) and the entrance test will be held on May 24, 2025 in various centres across India. CMI Admission 2025 Eligibility Criteria & Selection

CMI offers a range of UG, PG & PhD academic programs. Listed below is the eligibility criteria for all its courses.

Undergraduate Programs

  • B.Sc (Hons.) in Mathematics and Computer Science (3-year course): Completion of 12th standard or equivalent.
  • B.Sc (Hons.) in Mathematics and Physics (3-year course): Completion of 12th standard or equivalent.

Note: Candidates need not select their course during application as the choice can be made after admission.

Postgraduate Programs

  • M.Sc in Mathematics: BA, BSc, BE, BTech with a strong background in mathematics.
  • M.Sc in Computer Science: BA, BSc, BE, BTech with a strong background in computer science.
  • M.Sc in Data Science: BA, BSc, BE, BTech with a strong background in mathematics/statistics/computer science.

Doctoral Programs

  • Ph.D in Mathematics: B.E./ B.Tech / B.Sc (Math) / M.Sc (Math)
  • Ph.D in Computer Science: B.E / B.Tech / M.Sc (C.S) / M.C.A
  • Ph.D in Physics: M.Sc (Physics).

Selection Process

A common entrance test will be conducted by CMI for B.Sc (Hons), MSc and PhD programs. While for Ph.D in Physics, candidates must have qualified any one of the following:

  • Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST)
  • UGC-CSIR NET
  • GATE

Further, for all Ph.D programs, shortlisted candidates will be interviewed. Whereas, for other programs, the Admissions Committee may call shortlisted candidates for an interview based on their academic record.

CMI Admission 2025 Special Cases

Listed below are some of the special admission cases for various CMI Courses:

Direct Admission to BSc through Olympiads

Students with exceptional performances in National Olympiads in Mathematics or Physics conducted by HBSCE or the Indian Computing Olympiad conducted by IARCS may be exempted from B.Sc Entrance Test. This includes:

  • Students of class 11 or 12 qualified for the International Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp (IMOTC) or European Girls Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp (EGMOTC).
  • Qualification for the Orientation Cum Selection Camp (OCSC) in Physics in class 11 or 12.
  • Qualification for the International Olympiad in Informatics Training Camp (IOITC) or have received a gold or silver medal at the Indian National Olympiad in Informatics (INOI) in class11 or 12.

Ph.D. Admission Exemptions

  • Mathematics: Candidates awarded the NBHM PhD Fellowship may directly qualify for the interview without taking the CMI entrance exam.
  • Computer Science: Candidates may directly qualify for the interview based on their performance in JEST in Theoretical Computer Science or GATE in Computer Science or Information Technology.
  • Physics: Candidates can directly qualify for the interview based on their performance in JEST, UGC-CSIR NET, or GATE, meeting specific rank requirements as given below:
    • JEST: A rank of 400 or below
    • UGC-CSIR NET: Have qualified Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) of CSIR with a rank of 200 or less.
    • GATE: A rank of 100 or less in the GATE exam in Physics.

CMI Admission 2025 Fees

Tabulated below is the per semester fees for CMI courses:

Note: There’s no tuition fee for PhD students.

CMI Admission 2025 Scholarships

Various scholarships are available at CMI. Students of the institute usually get a fellowship of INR 5000 to INR 6000 per month. Given below are some other scholarship details of the institute:

PhD students will get a stipend of INR 37,000 per month for the first two years and INR 42,000 per month for the next three years, along with an annual book grant of INR 10,000.
