Central Sanskrit University’s First Convocation Addressed By President Murmu

New Delhi: The President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu, addressed the very first convocation of Central Sanskrit University in New Delhi on March 07, 2024. Union Minister of Education and Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, Shri Dharmendra Pradhan was also present at the occasion and spoke to the students.

President Murmu spoke to the students of Central Sanskrit University at length during the convocation. She spoke about the feeling of pride that Indian culture can inspire and underline the importance of culture in the country’s zeitgeist.

President Murmu shared that spreading knowledge from Sanskrit texts is a service to the nation. She denoted Sanskrit as “not only the language of God but also the language of people.”

During the convocation, President Murmu was very pleased by the nearly equal ratio of girls to boys who won gold medals in the graduating class. Drawing examples from female Sanskrit scholars of old such as Lopamudra, Gargi and Maitreyi, President Murmu lauded Central Sanskrit University’s efforts to empower women. 

She also drew on spirituality and morality as written in Sanskrit texts, and implored the students to follow the advice of those texts and behave ethically, speak the truth, not to shirk duty and to keep up with self-study even after graduation.

Mr. Dharmendra Pradhan took the mantle to speak after President Murmu. He spoke about his confidence in the students’ ability to make the 21st Century into the “Indian Century” by using their knowledge and skills to benefit welfare and economic growth in the country. 

He also appreciated the students’ participation in the campaign “Mera Pehla Vote Desh Ke Liye” and the University’s endeavor to implement the NEP 2020 with speed and efficacy.

He said, “NEP2020 is a transformative document that aims to ensure holistic education for students, make them self-reliant and inspire them in nation-building”. He also added that ancient Indian knowledge is still relevant to modern times, and there should be efforts made to acknowledge the richness of Indian philosophy and knowledge on international platforms.
