Ezhil Muthu is a professor and the head of the Department of Pharmaceutics at the United College of Pharmacy. After completing his M.Pharm degree, he received his PhD from the Department of Pharmaceutics, Bharathidasn University (NIT), Trichy. Dr. Ezhil Muthu also serves as PCI inspector for the Pharmacy Council of India and research guide for PhD candidates at TN. Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, Prist University and Mahatma Gandhi University. He is also a member of several scientific associations.

What are the key factors that keep you connected with the education sector?

Continuous wisdom, as a positive and enduring enterprise, has become essential for personal and professional growth. It entails a mindset that embraces the idea of learning beyond the confines of formal education and throughout one's lifetime. This mindset and thinking motivate and guide me to keep teaching in academia.

The education systems in India and other foreign countries are structured very differently. In your experience, what can an inbound student gain from studying here in your institute?

We have built an environment where there is a mix of principles of creativity and discipline among the students but also respect the democratic learner’s centricity. There is a difference in the learning environment here and abroad. The learners go through strict discipline in schools and there is a strong focus on performance. There is a strong support system enhancing fast learners performances and handholding for both fast and slow learners. Inbound students can gain a lot from this enriched education environment, which has been built meticulously.

How does the curriculum of your Institute ensure the best the practice of industry? 

United College of Pharmacy, Coimbatore (UCP) was established in the year 2019 under United Educational Institutions, Coimbatore. It is also affiliated with the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University. Our curriculum is set by our affiliated university and is updated regularly to provide the latest education to the students. We make use of practical hands-on learning through case studies, lab sessions and industry visits to provide an overall view of the industry.

Any insights into how your institute could be more welcoming to students of different races or economic backgrounds?

Our institute is located at Periyanaickenpalayam on a 40 acre sprawling campus, which is 4 km away from Coimbatore on Mettupalayam Road. The college is housed on a campus that has the most conducive atmosphere for academic preference. We aim to provide value-based pharmaceutical education to meet industry, hospital and community needs through continuous improvement of infrastructure and facilities for learning, practice and research.

What do you think your roles and responsibilities to the Institute and the students are? 

We believe that incorporating experiential learning opportunities, such as internships, project-based assignments, and simulations, into the curriculum enables students to apply theoretical knowledge in practical settings. We plan and teach lessons to the classes they are assigned to within the context of the school’s plans, curriculum and schemes of work. The teachers assess, monitor, record and report on the learning needs, progress and achievements of assigned pupils. We also contribute to the development, implementation and evaluation of the school’s policies, practices and procedures to support the school’s values and vision. 

What would you like people to know about your Institute they may not know? 

The United Educational Trust runs institutes like the United Institute of Technology, the United College of Pharmacy, the United College of Medical Sciences, the United College of Arts and Science, the United College of Physiotherapy, and the United Public School. We have a long history of educating and training students to be the best and well trained professionals in their fields. Our graduates have been making names for themselves in several industries across the nation.

What do you see as your college’s greatest strengths?

It has been the constant aim of the United Educational Institutes (UEI) to incorporate features of excellence on its campus. Every effort is made to improve existing best practices in the field of education. The management and staff at UEI take great care to ensure that the institute serves as an exemplary role model for other educational institutions across the country.

Any suggestions you would like to give to the current youth and the aspiring students? 

Think before you act. This simple but effective process of thought will help you avoid making critical mistakes that could cost you your freedom, education or your life. Here, I would also like to remind you of the proverb, “Thinking ability will safeguard you.”
