- Communication scientists are often confronted with the cliché that they should be able to speak particularly well. This, of course, falls short, because communication science is not primarily concerned with skilful conversations or private conversations, but rather examines public communication.
- Public communication has long ceased to take place only via the mass media, and also encompasses the publicly visible (individual) communication of politicians, companies, organizations or citizens. Communication science examines the content, functions and conditions of public communication as well as their use and impact.
