University of Kassel admissions open twice a year for Winter and Summer intakes, with all Indian applicants routed through the uni-assist portal for pre-evaluation. Bachelor’s applicants need Class XII plus a foundation year, and master’s applicants need a four-year bachelor’s with B2 CEFR English proof.

  • Winter 2026/27 (primary intake) closes 15 July 2026 for international applicants via uni-assist.
  • Bachelor’s needs Class XII plus foundation year, master’s needs a four-year degree at B2 CEFR.
  • Access-oriented admission at an estimated 50 to 60% (Kassel does not publish an official rate).

Popular English-taught masters at the University of Kassel among Indian students include Electrical Communication Engineering, Functional Safety Engineering, and Wind Energy Systems. Alumni highlight hands-on lab access and Kassel’s low cost of living relative to Berlin and Munich as key draws.

Admission Status. Closing Soon. Winter 2026/27 is the University of Kassel’s primary intake for bachelor’s and English-taught master’s applicants. International files with foreign degrees must reach uni-assist by 15 July 2026, along with the application fee of €75 (₹8,182) for the first course. Missed applicants can target Summer 2027 (deadline 15 January 2027) or Winter 2027/28 (opens 1 March 2027).

University of Kassel Application Deadlines for Indian Students

University of Kassel runs two intakes a year, but the Winter semester (October start) carries most English-taught master’s and all bachelor’s programs, so it functions as the primary intake for Indian applicants. Applications from foreign-degree holders are pre-evaluated by uni-assist, which is Germany’s central verification service that converts your Indian marksheet into a German grade before forwarding the file to Kassel. Deadlines are strict cut-offs, not rolling windows.

Currency note: All INR figures in this article use €1 = ₹109.09 (July 2026). Live rates may vary, so confirm with your bank before remitting.

University of Kassel Eligibility for Indian Students

Eligibility at the University of Kassel splits into an academic threshold (school leaving certificate or a comparable Bachelor’s) and a language threshold (German C1 or English B2 CEFR, depending on the medium of instruction). Kassel does not apply a numeric percentage cut-off for most master's, but a German grade of 2.5 or better is expected for competitive engineering intakes, which converts to roughly 65 to 70% on the Indian percentage scale.

University of Kassel Bachelor’s Eligibility Floor

Indian Class XII on its own is not accepted for direct undergraduate entry, because German bachelor’s programmes assume 13 years of school. Two bridging routes apply.

  • Studienkolleg pathway: a one-year German foundation college that ends in the Feststellungsprüfung entry exam, then feeds into a Kassel bachelor’s.
  • Indian bachelor’s transfer: complete one full year of a state-recognised Indian bachelor’s programme, then apply direct as an international student.
  • Class XII base: minimum 65% (recommended) aggregate with the subject prerequisites of your target course, verified through anabin.

What Master’s Grade Does Kassel Expect?

Master’s applicants need a four-year Indian bachelor’s degree from a UGC- or AICTE-recognised institution, in a discipline aligned with the target Kassel master’s program. A three-year Indian bachelor’s is not automatically accepted; some programmes bridge it via a foundation semester, others reject it outright. Grade thresholds by faculty:

  • Engineering master's (ECE, FUSE, Wind Energy): Bachelor’s aggregate of around 65% (recommended) or a German grade of 2.5.
  • Sciences (Nanoscience, Mathematics, CS): Bachelor’s around 60% (recommended) with strong core subject grades.
  • Social sciences (Global Political Economy, Sustainability): Bachelor’s around 60% (recommended) plus a motivation letter.

University of Kassel English Waivers for Indian Students

Kassel accepts IELTS Academic 5.5-6.5, TOEFL iBT 72-94, PTE Academic 75-59, or Cambridge C1 Advanced as B2 CEFR equivalents. Programme offices also accept a signed medium of instruction letter for Indian bachelor’s programmes taught fully in English, but this is granted on a case-by-case basis, not as a blanket policy. For German-taught programmes, the accepted proofs are DSH-2, TestDaF 4, or Goethe C1.

University of Kassel PG Programs and Admission Requirements

The University of Kassel runs 14 fully English-taught master's, weighted heavily toward engineering, computer science, and sustainability. Programme-specific fee variations for the executive MBA are covered on the course-wise fees breakdown.

University of Kassel UG Programs and Admission Requirements

Most University of Kassel bachelor’s degrees are taught in German, so Indian applicants need DSH-2 or TestDaF 4 alongside the Class XII plus foundation-year academic bridge. Direct entry from Indian Class XII is not permitted at Kassel; applicants must complete a Studienkolleg year or one year of an Indian bachelor’s first.

Programme Duration Minimum Eligibility  (recommended) English Req. Min.
BSc Computer Science 6 semesters Class XII (65%+) plus Studienkolleg or one year of Indian bachelor’s Not required (German C1)
BSc Business Education 6 semesters Class XII (65%+) plus Studienkolleg or one year of Indian bachelor’s Not required (German C1)
BSc Mathematics 6 semesters Class XII with Mathematics studied through Class XII, plus Studienkolleg Not required (German C1)
BA Architecture 8 semesters Class XII plus portfolio and Studienkolleg or one year of Indian bachelor’s Not required (German C1)
BA Art Science 6 semesters Class XII plus Studienkolleg Not required (German C1)

University of Kassel Application Process for Indian Students

The Kassel application is a two-body process. Uni-assist verifies your Indian degree and issues a Vorpruefungsdokumentation (VPD), which is a preliminary evaluation showing how your marks convert to the German grading scale. Kassel then makes the admission decision on that verified file. Follow these steps in order.

Planning note: APS takes 4 to 8 weeks and uni-assist takes another 4 to 6 weeks, so start APS at least three months before the Kassel deadline. Applicants who leave APS to June routinely miss the 15 July cut-off.

University of Kassel Admission Decisions Timeline

Kassel releases decisions after uni-assist forwards a complete file, so the timeline runs from the moment your VPD is issued, not from your submission date. Master’s decisions usually land 6 to 10 weeks after the deadline, and bachelor’s decisions 8 to 12 weeks after.

  • Winter offers: typically issued August to early September for a mid-October start.
  • Summer offers: issued February to March for an early April start.
  • Conditional offers: possible for applicants awaiting final bachelor’s marksheets or DSH results.
  • Deferral policy: Kassel does not routinely permit deferrals; a deferred admit generally must reapply for the next intake.
  • Acceptance window: confirm your seat and pay the semester contribution within four weeks of the offer letter.

University of Kassel Documents Required for Indian Applicants

Every uni-assist file for the University of Kassel needs the same core paperwork, plus programme-specific extras (portfolio for Architecture, sample of work for Global Political Economy). Documents must be certified copies with sworn German or English translations for anything in another language.

  • APS certificate: original from the German embassy in New Delhi.
  • Passport: certified copy of the photo page, with at least 12 months' validity beyond the intended stay.
  • Class X and XII certificates: attested copies with English translation if issued in a regional language.
  • Bachelor’s degree certificate and consolidated marksheet: attested copies (for master’s applicants).
  • Statement of Purpose: one to two pages tailored to the target Kassel programme.
  • Two Letters of Recommendation: from professors or senior employers on institutional letterhead.
  • Curriculum Vitae: Europass or standard format, one to two pages.
  • English or German test score report: IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, DSH-2, or TestDaF, sent electronically where possible.
  • Passport-size photographs on white background.
  • Programme extras: portfolio (Architecture, Art Science), work sample (Media, Design), CV of relevant industry work (Executive MBA).

University of Kassel Acceptance Rate for Indian Students

University of Kassel does not publish an official institutional acceptance rate, and no verified figure is listed in its factbook or annual reports. Third-party estimates cluster around 50 to 60%, based on the pattern that most Kassel masters are open admission, while a small handful of programmes carry a Numerus Clausus (NC) cap. NC means numerus clausus, or a limited-number lock where the last available seat goes to the applicant with the last-qualifying grade in the entering pool.

University of Kassel Master’s Selectivity

Kassel is best read as an access-oriented public university, which means it admits most applicants who meet its stated academic and language thresholds. Selectivity kicks in only when programme intake is capped. For the engineering and CS masters that Indian students target most, the file usually converts if the grade, English score, and degree recognition are all clean.

Which Kassel Programs Are NC-Restricted?

The NC list at Kassel is short and mostly concentrated in Psychology, Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy, some teacher education tracks, and a handful of health science programmes. English-taught international masters like ECE, FUSE, Wind Energy Systems, and Nanoscience are not NC-restricted, so grade cut-offs move year to year based on the applicant pool rather than a fixed floor.

University of Kassel rewards early planners: APS by January, uni-assist by April, and offers land by August. Zero tuition keeps total costs low, and B2 CEFR English is more forgiving than most German tech universities. Winter is the intake that matters.

University of Kassel Admissions: Frequently Asked Questions

Ques. Can I apply with a three-year Indian bachelor’s degree?

Ans. Depends on the programme. Kassel treats a three-year Indian bachelor’s as unequal to a German four-year degree, so many engineering masters require a four-year Indian bachelor’s or a bridging semester. Confirm on the specific programme page.

Ques. How long does uni-assist take to process a Kassel application?

Ans. 4 to 6 weeks after the file is complete, extending to 8 weeks in peak windows just before the 15 July or 15 January deadlines. Submitting at least 8 weeks before the deadline gives room for uni-assist to request missing documents.

Ques. Can Indian students enrol in a bachelor’s directly at Kassel after Class XII?

Ans. No. Indian Class XII is 12 years, while German bachelor’s programmes assume 13. You must either complete a Studienkolleg foundation year in Germany or finish one full year of a state-recognised Indian bachelor’s degree before applying.

Ques. What is the acceptance rate at University of Kassel for Indian students?

Ans. Kassel does not publish an official rate. Third-party estimates land at 50 to 60%, based on Kassel’s access-oriented public university model where most non-NC programmes admit applicants who meet the stated grade and language thresholds.

Ques. Does University of Kassel offer scholarships to Indian students?

Ans. Kassel does not run a dedicated Indian merit scholarship, but Indian admits can apply for DAAD scholarships (about 10% Indian success rate), the Deutschlandstipendium at €300 per month, and Erasmus+ mobility grants for exchange semesters within Europe.

Overview

For masters, I chose Universiteit Gent, Belgium because I had a strong motivation to work for the development of rural areas in India. This University offers one of the best rural development programs in the world. After completing my master's degree, I worked through different national and international development research organizations in India. That helped me to acquire some advanced skills in research and motivated me to pursue Ph.D. if I want to make my career in research. One day, I found a vacancy offered by Universität Kassel, Germany for a doctoral researcher on the effect of urbanization on the peri-urban area of Bengaluru city. This position attracted my attention to apply and by god's grace, they selected me for this position.

Scholarship

Yes, I got an Erasmus Mundus scholarship in masters during 2012-2014 which was 1000 euros per month. Erasmus Mundus scholarship was assumed to be applied along with the admission application form. In Ph.D., I am getting a monthly salary of around 1900 euros per month excluding taxes. I applied for a vacancy announced for a Doctoral Researcher by the Universität Kassel, Germany
