The University of Kassel is a public university in Kassel, Germany, founded in 1971. The university has over five locations, with Holländischer Platz (Kassel) as the main campus. It offers a wide range of courses for both bachelor’s and master’s levels.

German public universities usually do not charge tuition fees; instead, students pay a semester contribution of around €391.27 (₹42,397). This fee includes student services, administration costs, student union fees, and a public transport ticket. The university also has a branch called UNIKIMS (University of Kassel International Management School), which offers specialised programs that charge tuition fees.

The university offers two intakes: Winter (primary intake) and Summer. For Indian students, the university does not have a fixed class 12 score for undergraduate admission. The main requirement is eligibility under the German education system. Germany follows a 13-year education system, while India follows a 12-year system. Therefore, Indian students must either complete one year of a recognised undergraduate programme in India or attend a Studienkolleg, which is a one-year preparatory course in Germany designed to meet eligibility requirements.

For master’s programmes, students are required to have a relevant bachelor’s degree in the same or a related field. Generally, a minimum of 75-80% is preferred for admission, depending on the university and course.

The university also provides accommodation through student services (a third-party company), which can range between €235 - 308 (₹25,462 - 33,362) per month. The average cost of living, according to the university, is around €680 - 1400 (₹73,000 - 1,51 Lakhs) per month. There are also multiple scholarships, such as those supported by DAAD, which help students reduce their overall costs. The scholarship amount can range from €300 - 1,000 (₹32,505 - 1,08,350).

Note: €1 = ₹108.35 is the exchange rate used for all currency conversions in this article, as of April 10, 2026

The University of Kassel also follows this policy and charges €391.27 (42,397) per semester from international students as the contribution fee. The official composition of the semester contribution fee given by the university is.

FAQs

Ques. What is a blocked account?

Ans. A blocked account (Sperrkonto) is a special bank account required for a German student visa, where you deposit a fixed amount of money in advance. You cannot withdraw the full amount at once; instead, a limited amount (approx. €992 (₹1.7 Lakhs)) is released to you each month for your living expenses.

Ques. How can Indian students open a blocked account for a German student visa?

Ans. Indian students can open a blocked account online through approved providers like Expatrio, Fintiba, or Coracle. They need to fill out an application, upload documents, and transfer the required amount (€11,904 (₹12.89 Lakhs)). Indian banks do not offer blocked accounts, so students must use German or Germany-approved providers.

Overview

For masters, I chose Universiteit Gent, Belgium because I had a strong motivation to work for the development of rural areas in India. This University offers one of the best rural development programs in the world. After completing my master's degree, I worked through different national and international development research organizations in India. That helped me to acquire some advanced skills in research and motivated me to pursue Ph.D. if I want to make my career in research. One day, I found a vacancy offered by Universität Kassel, Germany for a doctoral researcher on the effect of urbanization on the peri-urban area of Bengaluru city. This position attracted my attention to apply and by god's grace, they selected me for this position.

Fees

During my master's, it was 8000 euros per year. For Ph.D. its 300 euros per semester.
