Technical University Ilmenau Eligibility for Indian Students
Eligibility at Technical University Ilmenau is split between the academic floor (Class XII or Bachelor’s), the language floor (German or English), and the credit floor for Master’s (180 ECTS). Below are the section-specific thresholds. Paperwork is handled separately in the Documents section.
Technical University Ilmenau Bachelor’s Requirements
- Class XII certificate recognised as equivalent to the German higher education entrance qualification (HZB).
- Where the Indian HSC is not directly equivalent, a Studienkolleg foundation year or one year of recognised Indian university study is required first.
- German language proficiency at B1 minimum, with C1 needed for direct admission.
- No minimum percentage cutoff; TU Ilmenau states its Bachelor programs are open to all applicants meeting equivalency.
Technical University Ilmenau Master’s Requirements
- A Bachelor’s degree with 180 ECTS in the same or a closely related subject area from an accredited university.
- Faculties run an aptitude review of transcripts, so subject fit and prior GPA both matter.
- German-taught Master’s: German B2 minimum, C1 for direct admission.
- English-taught Master’s: IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 79, or an equivalent recognised certificate.
The university does not publish a blanket IELTS waiver for Indian applicants. Applicants whose Bachelor’s was formally taught in English can request the faculty to accept a medium-of-instruction letter in place of IELTS, but the decision sits with the admissions committee and is not guaranteed.
Technical University Ilmenau PG Programs for Indian Students
English-taught Master’s are the primary route for Indian PG applicants. All programs run 4 semesters (2 years) and follow Germany’s tuition-free public model — you pay only the semester contribution of EUR 271.40 (INR 29,775). For the year-by-year cost picture see the course-wise fees breakdown.
| Programme | Duration | Minimum Eligibility | English Req. Min. |
|---|---|---|---|
| MSc Communications and Signal Processing | 4 semesters | Bachelor’s in EE, CS | IELTS 6.5 |
| MSc Research in Computer and Systems Engineering | 4 semesters | Bachelor’s in CS or Systems Engineering | IELTS 6.5 |
| MSc Micro- and Nanotechnologies | 4 semesters | Bachelor’s in Physics, EE, Materials or related | IELTS 6.5 |
| MSc International Business Economics | 4 semesters | Bachelor’s in Economics or Business | IELTS 6.5 |

| MSc Biomedical Engineering by Research | 4 semesters | Bachelor’s in Biomedical Eng, EE or Mechanical | IELTS 6.5 |
| MSc Data Science | 4 semesters | Bachelor’s in CS, Mathematics or Statistics | IELTS 6.5 |
Insider note: The Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology handles most Indian PG applicants. Its aptitude review favours CGPA above 7.5 from Indian institutes with strong core-subject grades — even though the university publishes no formal cutoff.
Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official Technical University Ilmenau page for your chosen program before applying.
Technical University Ilmenau UG Programs for Indian Students
Most Bachelor programs at Technical University Ilmenau are German-taught only, so Indian UG applicants must reach at least B1 German before applying and C1 for direct admission. The three engineering routes below draw the largest share of international UG enrolment.
| Programme | Duration | Minimum Eligibility | English Req. Min. |
|---|---|---|---|
| Computer Engineering (B.Sc.) | 6 semesters | Class XII with Mathematics; HZB equivalence | Not required (German-taught) |
| Electrical Engineering and Information Technology (B.Sc.) | 7 semesters | Class XII with Mathematics and Physics; HZB equivalence | Not required (German-taught) |
| Mechatronics (B.Sc.) | 7 semesters | Class XII with Mathematics and Physics; HZB equivalence | Not required (German-taught) |
| Business Informatics (B.Sc.) | 6 semesters | Class XII with Mathematics; HZB equivalence | Not required (German-taught) |
Indian HSC boards that are not directly recognised as HZB-equivalent require a preparatory year at a German Studienkolleg or one completed year at an Indian university before Bachelor admission. Verify your board’s status on the anabin database before filing.
Technical University Ilmenau Application Process
The application runs through TU Ilmenau’s own campus portal for Winter 2026, then shifts to uni-assist from the Winter 2027 intake onwards. Every Indian applicant follows a five-step flow.
- Create an account on the campus.tu-ilmenau.de/apply portal and start your application.
- Upload your Class XII or Bachelor’s transcripts, language certificate, passport copy, and CV as scanned PDFs.
- Complete the APS certificate from the German Embassy in New Delhi, mandatory for every Indian applicant since November 2022.
- Pay the application fee of EUR 75 (INR 8,228) on the campus.tu-ilmenau.de/apply portal by the level-specific deadline.
- Submit the application, then check the portal weekly for document-completeness queries from the international office.
The APS review typically takes 4 to 8 weeks and adds a fee of around INR 18,000. Start APS at least three months before the university deadline; skipping this step blocks both admission and the visa.
Technical University Ilmenau Admission Decisions
Admission letters flow from the TU Ilmenau international office once the faculty aptitude review clears. Decision timing tracks the intake window.
- Master Winter: offers issued from late June to early August, roughly 6 to 10 weeks after the 15 May deadline.
- Master Summer: offers issued from late December to early February, after the 15 November deadline.
- Bachelor Winter: offers issued from mid-August to mid-September, after the 15 July deadline.
- Offers are typically conditional on final transcripts, language certificate, and APS clearance.
- Acceptance is confirmed on the portal; enrolment requires arriving in Ilmenau with original documents.
TU Ilmenau does not run a formal deferral scheme. If you cannot join in the offered semester, you must reapply for the next cycle. Withdrawing before enrolment does not carry a penalty.
Documents Required for Technical University Ilmenau Admissions
The document list below applies to every Indian applicant. Send certified copies where the portal asks for verified scans. Do not include SOP, LORs, or transcripts under Eligibility — this section is paperwork only.
- Valid Indian passport, biodata page scan.
- Class XII marksheet and school leaving certificate (Bachelor applicants).
- Bachelor’s degree certificate and semester-wise marksheets (Master applicants).
- Certified English translation of any Hindi or regional-language document.
- APS certificate from the German Embassy in New Delhi.
- Language certificate: IELTS/TOEFL score report for English-taught, TestDaF/DSH/telc for German-taught.
- Curriculum vitae in European format, one page preferred.
- Statement of Purpose covering academic motivation and program fit.
- One to two Letters of Recommendation from academic referees.
- Copy of the online application form, signed.
Before you apply: The APS certificate is the single most common blocker for Indian applicants. Book your APS appointment as soon as your Bachelor’s final results are declared, not after receiving admission.
Technical University Ilmenau Acceptance Rate for Indian Students
Technical University Ilmenau does not publish an official acceptance rate. What the university does state is that its Bachelor programs carry no minimum grade cutoff, and Master admission is decided through a faculty aptitude review of transcripts rather than a fixed quota.
How selective is TU Ilmenau for Indian PG applicants?
PG selectivity varies sharply by faculty. Engineering Master’s (Communications and Signal Processing, Micro- and Nanotechnologies, Research in Computer and Systems Engineering) draw the most applications and cluster around a Bachelor CGPA of 7.5 or higher in practice, based on the faculty’s aptitude review pattern.
What are Indian UG selection odds?
UG selection is driven by HZB equivalence and German language proficiency, not by grade cutoffs. Indian HSC boards not directly recognised require a Studienkolleg year or one completed university year first — this filters more strongly than any percentage bar. See the university’s ranking band for its research position within German technical universities.
Insider note: Indian PG applicants with a first-class engineering Bachelor’s from an accredited Indian university (AICTE, UGC, NAAC A+) and IELTS 6.5 clear the aptitude filter more often than not, provided the SOP shows a clear research or industry fit with the chosen faculty.
Germany Student Visa for Technical University Ilmenau Applicants
Indian admits to Technical University Ilmenau apply for the German National Visa (Category D) for study, filed at the German Missions in India through the digital.diplo.de consular portal. Processing runs 6 to 12 weeks, so file within a week of receiving the offer letter.
Financial proof is the pivot of the application. You must open a blocked account holding EUR 11,904 (INR 13.05 Lakhs) for the first year, released as EUR 992 (INR 1.09 Lakhs) per month once in Germany. Statutory health insurance at around EUR 110 (INR 12,068) per month is mandatory before visa filing.
2026 update: Indian applicants must clear the APS certification before booking the visa slot. APS runs 4 to 8 weeks with a fee near INR 18,000, so account for it in your timeline. Post-study work rights extend to 18 months after graduation for job search.
Tips for Technical University Ilmenau Admissions from Indian Applicants
The following tips are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at Technical University Ilmenau.
- Start German at A1 in Class XI if you are Bachelor-bound; the B1 floor is the hardest bar for UG.
- Target the Winter Master intake (15 May deadline), not the smaller Summer window with limited program choice.
- Get the APS certificate booked the moment your Bachelor’s results are out — everything downstream waits on it.
- Highlight one publication, hackathon, or industry project in your SOP; the aptitude review reads for research fit.
- Budget the EUR 271.40 (INR 29,775) semester contribution as a fixed cost — TU Ilmenau does not waive it.
- Choose Ilmenau for depth in engineering research, not city buzz; the town is small and academic-focused.
Technical University Ilmenau Admissions Checklist for Indian Applicants
The following steps cover what Indian applicants typically complete on a Winter Master timeline.
- Twelve months out: register for IELTS or TestDaF and book the earliest available seat.
- Ten months out: apply for APS certification with the German Embassy in New Delhi.
- Eight months out: request certified transcripts and English translations from your Indian university.

Technical University Ilmenau rewards Indian applicants who plan the APS and language certificates a year ahead. The tuition-free public model plus small-cohort engineering research make it a strong low-cost pick, provided you lock the Winter Master 15 May deadline and treat every downstream step around it.

- To be honest, I filtered some Universities for me and applied to all of them, I didn't receive replies from all but I got accepted at TUI which was also unbelievable for me as it was a Technical university and it has more importance in regards if one wants a career in Research.
- As I got an admission to the university, it was covid period. The classes were online. Still, teachers supported very well in all aspects, we used to have presentations, projects, research papers and reports. So, study was not compromised at all.

- I didn't find anything as such, that I did not like about Technical University of Ilmenau. Also, I am aware that students are concerned about Racism, but personally I never experienced such things. And still if any student does face it, then there are organizations in the university where it can be reported.
