OET 2026 is the Occupational English Test, an English language proficiency exam conducted by Cambridge Boxhill Language Assessment Trust for healthcare professionals. It is accepted by 15+ regulatory bodies across the UK, USA, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Ireland and the UAE. The OET exam tests Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking in real medical and clinical contexts. Your OET score is valid for 2 years from the test date.

  • OET exam fee in India 2026: AUD $587 (around ₹40,000) for the full test covering all 4 sub-tests. Single sub-test rebooking costs AUD $315 (around ₹21,500) on paper only. The OET fee is the same across all 12 healthcare professions.
  • OET sub-test rebooking advantage: Unlike IELTS or TOEFL, OET lets you retake just 1 weak sub-test instead of the full exam. This is the cheapest retake option among English proficiency tests for healthcare professionals.
  • OET score clubbing: The UK (NMC, NMBI Ireland), Australia (AHPRA) and New Zealand (Nursing Council) allow combining sub-test scores from 2 sittings within 6 months. The USA (ECFMG) requires all minimum scores in a single sitting.

The OET Writing and Speaking sub-tests use real clinical scenarios. Nurses write referral letters. Doctors handle patient consultations. Pharmacists explain medication instructions. This profession-specific testing is why UK NMC and Australian AHPRA prefer OET over IELTS for healthcare registration. Many candidates who struggled with IELTS Writing find OET more natural. The content matches their daily clinical work.

Types of OET Exam Formats

OET offers 3 test formats. All formats have the same fee, the same content and the same scoring. Choose based on your comfort with technology and travel.

OET Format Where Sub-Test Rebooking Best For
OET on Paper Test centre venue Available (single sub-test for AUD $315) Healthcare professionals who prefer handwriting and offline test environments
OET on Computer Test centre venue Not available (must retake full test) Younger healthcare candidates comfortable with computer-based testing
OET@Home Online from home (proctored) Not available (must retake full test) Indian healthcare professionals in tier-2 or tier-3 cities without nearby OET centres

Which 12 healthcare professions can take the OET?

The OET tests these 12 healthcare professions with profession-specific Writing and Speaking content:

  • Medicine (doctors and surgeons)
  • Nursing (most common OET candidate in India)
  • Dentistry
  • Pharmacy
  • Physiotherapy
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Optometry
  • Podiatry

OET fees in India are calculated in AUD. Your final INR amount depends on the live exchange rate when your card is charged. The INR equivalent has climbed in 2026 because the AUD-INR rate is around ₹54 (up from ₹50 in 2023).

What is the OET exam fee in Kerala for 2026?

The OET exam fee in Kerala is AUD $587 (around ₹40,000. The OET fee in India is the same across all cities. What you pay in Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram or Kozhikode is identical to Delhi, Mumbai or Bengaluru. Kerala has the highest concentration of OET candidates in India because of the large nursing diaspora targeting the UK and Australia.

What are the OET fee payment methods available in India?

OET accepts only credit and debit cards (Visa, MasterCard, American Express) through the myOET portal. UPI, net banking and bank transfers are not accepted. You must enable cross-border online payments on your Indian card before registering. Forex cards from HDFC, ICICI or Axis Bank reduce the AUD-INR conversion losses.

OET Fee Waiver and Sponsorship 2026

OET does not offer direct fee waivers, scholarships or discounts to individual candidates. Indian healthcare professionals must pay the full OET fee for each attempt.

  • Some UK NHS hospital sponsorship programmes cover the OET fee for sponsored nurses.
  • Australian state-sponsored healthcare migration schemes sometimes reimburse the OET fee after you start working there.
  • A few Indian healthcare staffing agencies offer OET coaching and fee reimbursement against a 2-year work commitment.
  • Government schemes like the Kerala Norka Roots provide partial OET support to qualifying nursing candidates.

Be careful with private OET reimbursement schemes. Many require you to sign a multi-year work bond. Read the contract carefully before accepting any agency-paid OET fee.

Heads up: OET costs more than IELTS but saves money on retakes

The OET fee of ₹31,575 is higher than IELTS at ₹19,000. But OET offers single sub-test rebooking at ₹19,090. The IELTS One Skill Retake at ₹12,650 is cheaper per sub-test. The OET advantage is for candidates who pass 3 out of 4 sub-tests on the first attempt. They save ₹12,485 by re-booking just the failed sub-test. IELTS forces a full retake at ₹19,000 if you need a 2-band lift in any section.

OET Exam Registration Process 2026

You can register for OET only online. Cambridge Boxhill Language Assessment Trust handles the entire OET registration through the official myOET portal.

OET Online Registration Steps

  1. Visit oet.com and create your myOET account.
  2. Enter your full name exactly as it appears on your passport.
  3. Verify your email and complete your profile with professional details.
  4. Choose your test format: OET on Paper, OET on Computer or OET@Home.
  5. Select your healthcare profession from the 12 OET professions.
  6. Pick your test date and India test centre.
  7. Upload a recent passport-size photo.
  8. Pay the AUD $587 fee using Visa, MasterCard or American Express.
  9. You receive a confirmation email with your OET registration number.

What documents do you need to register for the OET?

You need a valid Indian passport at registration and on test day. The name on your passport must exactly match the name on your OET registration. You also need proof of your healthcare profession qualification at the time of test booking. Aadhaar, PAN card and other Indian IDs are not accepted.

For OET@Home, you must complete an equipment check and a quiet-room check 24 to 48 hours before your test. Failed equipment checks lead to test cancellation with no refund. Run the OET system check at least 1 week before your test date.

Insider Tip: OET@Home rules are stricter than other at-home tests

OET@Home has stricter monitoring than TOEFL Home Edition or GMAT at Home. You cannot have any paper, books, notes or second screens in your room. Even a wall calendar in the camera's view leads to test cancellation. Use a completely cleared room and run a full equipment check 48 hours before the test. Indian healthcare professionals in joint families struggle most with the "no people in adjacent rooms during the test" rule.

OET Exam Eligibility 2026

OET exam eligibility is explained in the table below.

Criteria Requirement
Healthcare Profession You must belong to one of the 12 OET-recognised healthcare professions
Qualification Healthcare degree or relevant training certificate from a recognised institution
Minimum Age 16 years (OET recommends but does not enforce)
ID Required Valid Indian passport (no exceptions)
Number of Attempts Unlimited. You can take OET as many times as you need
Cooldown No mandatory waiting period between attempts

OET does not verify your healthcare qualification at registration. But the regulator you apply to (NMC UK, AHPRA Australia, ECFMG USA) will verify it during your professional registration process. Take OET only if your healthcare qualification is genuine and verifiable.

Can BSc nursing students take the OET?

Yes. BSc Nursing students can take the OET even before completing their degree. But most regulators require you to have completed your nursing qualification before they accept your OET score for registration. Check with your target country's nursing council before taking the OET as a student.

OET Exam Dates in India 2026

You can check upcoming OET exam dates on the official OET website. The OET is held 24 times a year, typically twice every month. This is the most frequent test schedule among English proficiency tests for healthcare professionals.

  • OET on Paper is offered on selected Saturdays each month.
  • OET on Computer is available on more frequent dates at select centres.
  • OET@Home is available almost daily based on your time zone slots.

Book your OET test date at least 6 to 8 weeks in advance. Kerala, Punjab and Bengaluru centres fill up first because of the high nursing-applicant demand in these states.

OET Test Centres in India 2026

OET runs around 50 test centres across India through certified Cambridge Boxhill partners. You can find a full list of OET test centres in India on Collegedunia.

  • Kerala: Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode, Kottayam, Thrissur (the highest OET volume in India).
  • Karnataka: Bengaluru, Mangaluru, Mysore.
  • Tamil Nadu: Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai.
  • Telangana / Andhra Pradesh: Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam.
  • Maharashtra: Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur.
  • Delhi NCR: Delhi, Gurugram, Noida.
  • Punjab: Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Amritsar.
  • Other states: Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Lucknow, Jaipur, Bhubaneswar.

The OET fee is the same across all Indian cities. Each test centre offers limited seats per date.

OET has 50 centres compared to IELTS at 200+ centres in India. If you live outside the 8 major OET states above, expect 200 to 400 km of travel to the nearest OET centre. The OET@Home format eliminates this travel cost.

India-Specific: Kerala dominates OET volume in India

Kerala accounts for around 40% of Indian OET candidates. The state's nursing colleges have built a strong UK and Australia pipeline through OET. Most Kerala-based nurses target NMC UK registration with Grade B (350 points) in each sub-test. If you are a Kerala-based nurse, you have access to 5 OET test centres within the state. This is more than any other Indian state.

OET Sub-Test Retake (Unique to OET)

The OET sub-test retake is a unique feature among English proficiency tests. You can rebook just 1, 2 or 3 sub-tests instead of taking the full OET again. Single sub-test rebook costs AUD $315 (around ₹19,090). Full retake costs AUD $587 (around ₹40,000). The sub-test retake works only for paper-based OET. It is not available for OET on Computer or OET@Home.

Sub-Test Retake Combination Fee (AUD) Fee in India (INR approx.) Saving vs Full Retake
1 sub-test (e.g. only Writing) AUD $315 ₹21,500 ₹12,485 saved
2 sub-tests (e.g. Writing + Speaking) AUD $415 ₹28,330 ₹11,030 saved
3 sub-tests AUD $515 ₹35,160 ₹2,635 saved
Full retake (4 sub-tests) AUD $587 ₹40,000 None (full price)

Important rules for the OET sub-test retake:

  • Available only on paper-based OET.
  • You can rebook a sub-test only if your previous OET attempt was within the last 12 months.
  • Your previous sub-test scores stay valid and combine with your new sub-test score.
  • The regulator must accept score clubbing for your country (see Acceptance section below).

The ECFMG (USA) does NOT accept clubbed OET scores. If you target USA medical registration, you must achieve all 4 sub-test minimums in a single sitting. The sub-test retake feature is only useful for UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand.

Key Insight: Sub-test retake math depends on your target country

A Kerala-based nurse targeting NMC UK can save ₹12,485 by re-booking only the Writing sub-test on paper. The same nurse targeting ECFMG USA must retake the full OET because the USA does not allow score clubbing. Choose paper-based OET if you target UK, Ireland, Australia or New Zealand. Choose any format if you target USA, because score clubbing is not available anyway.

OET Exam Pattern and Syllabus 2026

The OET exam pattern 2026 has 4 sub-tests. The total test duration is around 3 hours. Listening and Reading are common across all 12 professions. Writing and Speaking are profession-specific.

Sub-Test Duration Profession-Specific? Score Range Tests What
Listening 50 minutes No (common to all 12) 0-500 / Grade A-E Healthcare consultations, monologues, lectures
Reading 60 minutes No (common to all 12) 0-500 / Grade A-E Healthcare texts, articles, guidelines
Writing 45 minutes Yes 0-500 / Grade A-E 1 letter (referral, discharge or transfer) based on case notes
Speaking 20 minutes Yes 0-500 / Grade A-E 2 role-plays as a healthcare professional with a patient

OET Listening sub-test syllabus:

  • Part A: Extended healthcare consultation extracts (12 minutes). Note-taking task.
  • Part B: Short workplace extracts (10 minutes). Multiple-choice questions.
  • Part C: Presentations or interviews on healthcare topics (15 minutes). Multiple-choice questions.

OET Reading sub-test syllabus:

  • Part A: 15 minutes for 4 short healthcare texts. Quick information search.
  • Part B: 45 minutes for 6 short workplace texts plus 2 longer healthcare articles.

OET Writing sub-test syllabus: One letter task in 45 minutes. The letter content depends on your profession. Nurses write nursing referral or discharge letters. Doctors write transfer letters to specialists. Pharmacists write information letters about medication.

OET Speaking sub-test syllabus: Two 5-minute role-plays. You play your healthcare profession. The OET interlocutor plays a patient, parent or carer. Each role-play has a different clinical scenario.

How does OET scoring work?

Each OET sub-test is scored 0 to 500 points. The points map to letter grades:

  • Grade A: 450-500 points (very high English proficiency)
  • Grade B: 350-440 points (good English proficiency (most regulators' minimum))
  • Grade C+: 300-340 points (acceptable for some regulators)
  • Grade C: 200-290 points (below minimum for most healthcare registrations)
  • Grade D: 100-190 points (well below minimum)
  • Grade E: 0-90 points (lowest)

OET does not give an overall score. Each sub-test is scored and reported separately.

Is there negative marking in the OET?

No. The OET has no negative marking. Always attempt every question, even if you have to guess. There is no penalty for a wrong answer.

OET Exam Challenges Faced by Indian Healthcare Professionals

Common challenges Indian healthcare professionals face in the OET:

  • OET Writing letter format: Indian nurses and doctors trained in Indian medical English often use overly formal or overly informal letter tones. The OET expects a specific clinical-handover register.
  • OET Speaking role-plays: The interlocutor sometimes plays an emotional patient. Indian healthcare professionals trained to be brief in OPDs find the empathy-driven dialogue challenging.
  • British and Australian English nuances: OET uses British and Australian medical terminology. Indian professionals trained on American medical English need to adjust spellings and terms (paracetamol vs acetaminophen).
  • Time pressure in Writing: 45 minutes to plan, write and review a 180-200 word letter feels tight. Most Indian candidates struggle with Writing in their first OET attempt.
  • Limited OET centre footprint: Only 50 OET centres versus 200+ IELTS centres. Tier-2 city healthcare professionals face higher travel and hotel costs.
  • OET@Home equipment requirements: Strict environment rules cause test cancellation for candidates in shared family homes.

OET Exam Tips for Indian Healthcare Professionals 2026

Use these sub-test tips to improve your OET score. The tips follow OET's official scoring criteria.

  • OET Listening: Practice with BBC Radio 4 health programmes and Australian ABC Radio National. Build comfort with British and Australian accents.
  • OET Reading: Read NHS UK and Australian Department of Health guidelines. The vocabulary and tone match OET passages exactly.
  • OET Writing: Master the 4-paragraph clinical letter template: purpose statement, key history, current condition, request or action. Use 180-200 words. Practice 15+ letters before the test.
  • OET Speaking: Practice role-plays focused on empathy phrases. "I understand this is difficult" and "Could you tell me more about that?" are high-scoring patterns. Record yourself and review tone.
  • Professional vocabulary: Build profession-specific vocabulary. Nurses need handover terminology. Doctors need history-taking phrases. Pharmacists need medication counselling language.
  • Mock test strategy: Take at least 3 full-length OET mock tests under timed conditions. Use the official OET Sample Tests plus paid Premium tests.
  • Best resources: Official OET Preparation Portal, OET Premium subscription, Benchmark OET, e2 OET (free YouTube), OET Coaching Academy (online).
  • Empathy-first speaking: Many Indian healthcare professionals lose marks in Speaking by being efficient rather than empathetic. The OET tests communication, not clinical speed.

Reality Check: OET Writing is the biggest score gap for Indian nurses

Most Indian nursing OET candidates pass Listening, Reading and Speaking on the first attempt. Writing is where 60% fall short of Grade B. The NMC UK allows Grade C+ (300) in Writing because of this pattern. But other regulators like ECFMG USA require Grade B (350) in Writing too. Plan extra prep time for Writing. Use the sub-test rebook to lift just your Writing score if you fail to clear it the first time.

Ques. Is the OET harder than IELTS?

Ans. The OET and IELTS test different skills. The OET is specialised for healthcare contexts. Ques. Can I take OET at home in India?

Ans. Yes. OET@Home is available in India. The content, scoring and fee are identical to the test centre version. Ans. Unlimited. There is no cap on the number of OET attempts. There is no mandatory waiting period between attempts. You pay the full fee or the sub-test fee each time.

Ques. Is OET accepted for UK student visa?

Ans. OET is not a UKVI Secure English Language Test (SELT). For a UK student visa, you must take IELTS for UKVI or another SELT. OET is accepted by NMC UK and GMC UK only for healthcare professional registration in the UK, not for student visa purposes.

Ques. Can I reschedule my OET test?

Ans. Yes. You can reschedule the OET test through your myOET account. The rescheduling fee is AUD $120 (around ₹8,200) if you reschedule more than 7 days before the test. The fee jumps to AUD $200 (around ₹13,650) if you reschedule within 7 days of the test.

Ques. What is the OET passing score?

Ans. OET does not have a single passing score. The passing score depends on the regulator you apply to. Most regulators require Grade B (350 points) in all 4 sub-tests. The NMC UK allows Grade C+ (300) in Writing only. Other sub-tests need Grade B.
