Don't join VNIT, it's not as good as you think
I am a fourth year student here with a great cgpa and I might get placed well but the opportunities I got were way less than someone from other NITs or even some IIITs. Let me tell you all the things about VNIT: 1. Placements - Microsoft, Adobe, DE Shaw, Atlassian, Amazon, Nutanix, Barclays, Salesforce, etc. none of these companies hire from our college. But some of these companies do hire from IIIT Lucknow, the college which was established in 2016. 2. Coding culture - non existent, all technical clubs are dead. Only active club is IvLabs which is a robotics and AI club which is goated but apart from this there is nothing. Only 20-30 students per year are in this club. There is severe competition to get in as everyone knows this is the only technical clubs here. Others are as good as non existing. Hardly 2 people are expert on codeforces and 30 active people giving contests. Most of whom are passed out students already working in Oracle, google. Compare this with NIT Allahabad or IIITs, they have 100s of students doing cp and they are well trained by the faculty and seniors. 3. Arrogant professors and poor administration: this is the glaring weakness of VNIT which is beyond repair. If you think this doesn't matter, think twice. If at all you are unlucky and need something done from the professor or admin, then all the best convincing them. They will take 10-15 days for a 1/2 hour task. 4. Weird Rules : No 6m internships. There is the NEP but then all the best convincing your faculty advisor for letting you register 8 theory courses for faster completion of degree. 100% attendance rule - so all your medical certificates have no use, it accounts for only 25% of the attendance. You meet with an accident? Get a semester back, easy peasy. Doesn't matter if you have 9+ cgpa. Though most professors have this rule relaxed but what if you end up with a sadist professor. I genuinely think someone might commit suicide in the upcoming years and they will have to scrap this rule. Similar incident happened in IIT Guwahati and Roorkee. College administration doesn't seem to learn 5. Hot weather and bad hostels - weather is not really a fault of VNIT but some of the hostels are really old and khandar types. There is a some corruption involved in the hostel allocation so if you don't have connections, all the best when you end up in 1990 hostel and the hostel council members somehow end up in a newly constructed hostel. Here are some of the pros: 1. Great campus 2. Internet connectivity, 24/7 water and electricity. 3. Spacious rooms for first years atleast. single room for next 3 years. 4. Get into IvLabs(robotics club) and have a CSE, ECE, EEE or Mech branch and be sorted. Students get great internships OFF CAMPUS from this club and get into top US universities like CMU, USC, UMich and some crack GATE. They make a lot of projects. But only 20 seats every year. 5. If you have a branch till Mech, you will atleast get a first job. Good if you don't care about the salary package. So I guess the cons outweigh the pros so take a wise decision.
