ISI PGDSMA FAQs
Ques. Is the PGDSMA at ISI Chennai a paid programme, and what are the total costs a student should expect?
Ans. The PGDSMA programme at ISI Chennai has absolutely no tuition fees -- it is completely free for all admitted students regardless of category. However, students should budget for living expenses in Chennai (accommodation, food, transport), which can range from Rs. 8,000 to Rs. 15,000 per month depending on lifestyle. Additionally, students must plan for the mandatory one-week visit to ISI Kolkata headquarters between the two semesters, which involves travel and accommodation costs. There is no monthly stipend provided to PGDSMA students, unlike the JRF/SRF scholars.
Ques. What is the difference between PGDSMA at ISI Chennai and the same programme at ISI Tezpur? Which one should I prefer?
Ans. Both centres offer the same PGDSMA curriculum with the same quality of instruction, as ISI maintains uniform academic standards across all its centres. The key difference is location and seat reservation: the Tezpur centre reserves 50% of its 18 seats for domiciled candidates of North-Eastern states, while the Chennai centre has 25 seats open to candidates from all over India without any domicile restriction. Students from outside the North-East who do not qualify for the domicile quota at Tezpur should apply for the Chennai centre. The research environment and faculty expertise may differ slightly between the two centres.
Ques. What career opportunities are available after completing PGDSMA from ISI Chennai?
Ans. PGDSMA graduates from ISI Chennai are well-equipped for careers as statisticians and data analysts in government departments, public sector undertakings, research organisations, and private industries. Many graduates go on to work in sectors such as banking, insurance, pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, and IT analytics. The ISI brand name carries significant weight in the job market, and the programme's strong foundation in applied statistics and analytics makes graduates competitive for roles such as Statistical Officer, Data Analyst, Research Associate, and Quality Analyst. Some graduates also use the PGDSMA as a stepping stone to pursue higher studies (M.Sc. Statistics, M.Stat at ISI, or Ph.D. programmes).
Ques. How difficult is the ISI Admission Test for PGDSMA, and how should I prepare?
Ans. The PGDSMA admission test (DST paper) consists of multiple-choice questions in Basic Mathematics at the pass/minor level of a bachelor's degree. This includes topics such as calculus, algebra, probability, and basic statistics. While the difficulty level is lower than the JRF or M.Tech admission tests, the competition is still significant given the limited number of seats (25 at Chennai). ISI provides sample question papers from previous years on its admission portal (admission.isical.ac.in), which are the best resource for preparation. Candidates with a strong foundation in undergraduate Mathematics and Statistics are well-positioned for this test.
Ques. Is there a placement cell or job assistance for PGDSMA students at ISI Chennai?
Ans. ISI Chennai has a placement cell that facilitates campus placements for its students. The placement window for 2025-26 runs from December 2025 to July 2026. While the primary placement focus is on research scholars and M.Tech students, PGDSMA graduates also benefit from ISI's strong industry connections and alumni network. Companies from sectors such as analytics, banking, insurance, and manufacturing have recruited from ISI campuses. However, PGDSMA students are advised to also actively pursue off-campus opportunities given the diploma (rather than degree) nature of the qualification.
Ques. Can I pursue a Ph.D. or M.Stat at ISI after completing PGDSMA from ISI Chennai?
Ans. Yes, PGDSMA graduates can apply for higher programmes at ISI, including the M.Stat (Master of Statistics) and the JRF (Junior Research Fellowship) for Ph.D. programmes, provided they meet the eligibility criteria. For M.Stat, the eligibility requires a Bachelor's degree of three or more years in any discipline, which PGDSMA graduates would already have. For JRF in Statistics, the eligibility requires an M.Sc/M.Stat in Statistics -- so PGDSMA graduates would need to first complete an M.Sc. in Statistics from a recognised university before applying for the JRF. The PGDSMA itself is not equivalent to an M.Sc. degree for this purpose.
