ISI Ph.D. (Maths & Statistics) FAQs
Ques. Does ISI Chennai specifically offer Ph.D. in Statistics and Mathematics, or will I be placed at another centre?
Ans. As per the ISI Prospectus 2026-27, Ph.D. in Statistics and Mathematics is formally offered at Kolkata, Delhi, and Bangalore centres. ISI Chennai has an Applied Statistics Unit (ASU) with active research in mathematical statistics, reliability theory, and survival analysis, and scholars with matching research interests may be assigned to Chennai. However, the centre assignment for JRF scholars is determined by the institute's internal Admission Rules, and candidates cannot choose their centre. Scholars assigned to Chennai may also be required to travel to ISI Kolkata for completing mandatory coursework.
Ques. What is the difference between JRF in Statistics and JRF in Mathematics at ISI? Can I apply for both?
Ans. JRF in Statistics and JRF in Mathematics are separate programmes with different eligibility criteria and written test papers. JRF in Statistics requires an M.Sc/M.Stat in Statistics, while JRF in Mathematics requires an M.Sc/M.Math in Mathematics (or M.E./M.Tech with Mathematics). The research areas also differ: Statistics JRF leads to Ph.D. in Statistics (probability, inference, biostatistics, etc.), while Mathematics JRF leads to Ph.D. in Mathematics (algebra, topology, analysis, etc.). You can apply for both if you meet the eligibility criteria for each, but you will need to appear for separate written tests.
Ques. How competitive is the ISI JRF (Statistics/Mathematics) admission, and what is the typical selection ratio?
Ans. The ISI JRF admission is highly competitive. For 2026-27, there are only 11 JRF seats in Statistics and 13 in Mathematics (across all centres combined). Given that thousands of candidates appear for the ISI Admission Test each year, the selection ratio is extremely low -- typically less than 1-2% of applicants are selected. The written test is known for its high difficulty level, testing deep conceptual understanding of graduate-level Statistics or Mathematics. Candidates who have cleared CSIR-UGC NET JRF or NBHM JRF have a significant advantage as they can apply through the alternate channel.
Ques. What research areas does the Applied Statistics Unit at ISI Chennai focus on?
Ans. The Applied Statistics Unit (ASU) at ISI Chennai focuses on mathematical statistics, reliability theory, survival analysis, non-parametric inference, censored data models, and inequality measures. The unit currently has one faculty member -- Dr. Sudheesh Kumar Kattumannil (Associate Professor) -- whose research spans mathematical statistics, reliability theory, and survival analysis. Students interested in these specific areas of applied and theoretical statistics would find ISI Chennai's ASU particularly relevant for their doctoral research.
Ques. Can I pursue a Ph.D. in Statistics at ISI Chennai if I have a CSIR-UGC NET JRF in Mathematical Sciences?
Ans. Yes. Candidates who have been awarded a JRF by CSIR/UGC/NBHM/DBT/Inspire based on a nationally conducted written test can apply for Ph.D. admission at ISI throughout the year through a separate channel. For ISI Chennai specifically, such candidates should contact the Head of the Applied Statistics Unit directly with their application and relevant documents. The selection process for this channel involves a separate written test and interview conducted by ISI. This route is particularly useful for candidates who have already secured external funding and want to pursue research at ISI Chennai.
Ques. What career paths are available after completing a Ph.D. in Statistics or Mathematics from ISI?
Ans. A Ph.D. from ISI in Statistics or Mathematics opens doors to highly prestigious careers. Most ISI Ph.D. graduates go on to academic and research positions at IITs, IIMs, IISc, central universities, and international universities. Many also join research divisions of organisations such as ISRO, DRDO, RBI, and leading data analytics firms. ISI's strong alumni network and reputation in the global statistics and mathematics community significantly enhances career prospects. The institute also runs an active placement programme, and companies such as Goldman Sachs, Amazon, Microsoft, JP Morgan, and McKinsey have recruited from ISI campuses.
