DACN Ph.D. (Law) FAQs
Ques. Is the Ph.D. (Law) programme at DACN a full-time on-campus programme, and what is the minimum duration?
Ans. Yes, the Ph.D. (Law) programme at Dr. Ambedkar College, Nagpur is a full-time, on-campus research programme. As per UGC regulations and RTMNU norms, the minimum duration for completing the Ph.D. is 3 years from the date of registration, and the maximum duration is generally 6 years (with possible extensions as per university rules). Scholars are required to be present at the research centre and work under the guidance of their assigned supervisor.
Ques. Can I get admission to Ph.D. (Law) at DACN without appearing in the RTMNU PET if I have cleared UGC-NET?
Ans. Yes, candidates who have qualified UGC-NET (with or without JRF) or an equivalent national-level examination are exempted from appearing in the RTMNU PET, as per Direction No. 7 of 2026. Such candidates can directly apply for provisional admission at DACN's Department of Law during the university-notified admission schedule, subject to availability of seats and supervisor consent. However, they must still go through the Research Advisory Committee (RAC) interview process at the college.
Ques. How many Ph.D. (Law) seats are available at DACN, and what is the current vacancy situation?
Ans. The Department of Law at DACN has a total intake capacity of 30 Ph.D. seats across 4 supervisors. As per the vacancy document released in July 2026 for the 2026-27 session, only 1 seat was vacant (under Dr. S.P. Kalamdhad). The December 2026 vacancy document showed 0 vacancies. For the 2026 session, fresh vacancies will be notified by DACN after the RTMNU PET 2026 process is completed. Seats are highly competitive given the limited intake, so candidates are advised to apply promptly once the schedule is announced.
Ques. What is the role of the Research Advisory Committee (RAC) in the Ph.D. admission process at DACN?
Ans. The Research Advisory Committee (RAC) is a key body in the Ph.D. admission process at DACN. After the display of the list of candidates who have applied for provisional admission, the RAC conducts interviews to assess the research aptitude, subject knowledge, and proposed research area of each applicant. Based on the RAC interview, a merit list is prepared and provisional admission is granted. The RAC also plays an ongoing role in monitoring the progress of registered Ph.D. scholars throughout their research tenure.
Ques. Does DACN provide hostel facilities for Ph.D. (Law) scholars?
Ans. No, Dr. Ambedkar College, Nagpur does not have its own hostel facility for students, including Ph.D. scholars. Students from outside Nagpur are required to arrange their own accommodation through private paying guest (PG) facilities or rental housing in the city. The college is located at Deekshabhoomi, which is a central and well-connected area of Nagpur, making it relatively easy to find accommodation nearby. The college does, however, provide the Shri K. Khusuru M. Mehta and Smt. Putlan K. Mehta Endowment Fund for deserving candidates needing lodging and boarding assistance.
Ques. What are the research areas available under Ph.D. (Law) at DACN, and how do I choose a supervisor?
Ans. The Department of Law at DACN has 4 approved research supervisors: Dr. H.V. Menon (Professor and Head), Dr. V.V. Deshpande (Professor), Dr. S.P. Kalamdhad (Associate Professor), and Dr. P.R. Lokhande (Associate Professor). Research areas typically span constitutional law, criminal law, labour law, environmental law, and other branches of legal studies, depending on the supervisor's specialisation. Candidates are advised to contact the department directly or visit the college to discuss their research interests with potential supervisors before applying, as supervisor consent and seat availability are critical factors in the admission process.
