DACN Ph.D. (English) FAQs
Ques. Is the Ph.D. in English at Dr. Ambedkar College, Nagpur a full-time programme, and can I pursue it while working?
Ans. The Ph.D. in English at DACN is a full-time, on-campus programme affiliated to RTMNU. As per RTMNU norms, full-time research scholars are expected to be present at the research centre regularly for coursework, RAC meetings, and progress seminars. While there is no strict daily attendance requirement like a taught programme, scholars are expected to be actively engaged with their supervisor and the department. Working professionals who wish to pursue a Ph.D. should check with the department about the feasibility, as RTMNU does have provisions for part-time Ph.D. in some cases, but the DACN English department currently lists this as a full-time programme.
Ques. There is only one supervisor in the English department at DACN. What happens if the supervisor's seats are full?
Ans. As per the 2025-26 vacancy data, Dr. S. J. Bahadure is the sole registered supervisor in the Department of English at DACN, with an intake capacity of 8 and 14 out of 20 total seats vacant. If the supervisor's individual quota of 8 is full, no new admissions can be made under that supervisor even if overall department seats are available. It is advisable to contact the college directly before applying to confirm current vacancy under the supervisor, as the vacancy data is updated each session.
Ques. Do I need to clear RTMNU PET if I have already qualified UGC-NET?
Ans. Yes, candidates who have qualified UGC-NET (with or without JRF) are exempt from appearing in the RTMNU PET as per the university's Direction No. 7 of 2026. However, they still need to apply for provisional admission through the RTMNU Ph.D. portal and follow the admission schedule announced by the university. NET-qualified candidates should carry their NET scorecard and certificate at the time of document verification and RAC interview at DACN.
Ques. What is the mandatory publication requirement before submitting the Ph.D. thesis at DACN?
Ans. Before submitting the Ph.D. thesis at DACN, research scholars must publish a minimum of two research papers, with at least one paper in a Scopus/Web of Science/UGC-CARE listed peer-reviewed journal as the first author. Additionally, scholars must present two papers at national or international conferences as the first author, complete the mandatory 12-credit course work, and conduct a pre-submission seminar. These requirements are in line with RTMNU Direction No. 27 of 2021 and are strictly enforced at DACN's research centre.
Ques. What is the total cost of completing a Ph.D. in English at DACN over the minimum 3-year duration?
Ans. For the minimum 3-year duration, the approximate total cost at DACN is: Admission fee Rs. 2,000 (one-time) + Annual college fees Rs. 13,000 x 3 years = Rs. 39,000 + RTMNU Registration fee Rs. 2,500 + RTMNU Retention fee Rs. 600 x 6 (every 6 months over 3 years) = Rs. 3,600 + RTMNU Thesis submission fee Rs. 12,000 = approximately Rs. 59,100 for 3 years. If course work at UGC-HRDC is opted, an additional Rs. 7,000 is payable to RTMNU. This makes the programme highly affordable compared to private universities offering Ph.D. programmes.
Ques. What career options are available after completing a Ph.D. in English from DACN/RTMNU?
Ans. A Ph.D. in English from DACN, affiliated to RTMNU, opens up several academic and non-academic career paths. The most common career route is as an Assistant Professor in colleges and universities, for which UGC-NET qualification along with a Ph.D. is now mandatory as per the UGC Regulations 2018. Scholars can also pursue post-doctoral research, apply for faculty positions in central universities, or work as content developers, editors, and language trainers in the corporate sector. Given that DACN is located in Nagpur, a major educational hub in Vidarbha, graduates also find opportunities in regional colleges affiliated to RTMNU and other universities in Maharashtra.
