DACN Ph.D. Chemistry FAQs
Ques. Is the Ph.D. in Chemistry at Dr. Ambedkar College a full-time programme, and what are the research areas available?
Ans. The Ph.D. in Chemistry at DACN is a full-time on-campus programme affiliated to RTMNU. The department has four recognized research supervisors: Dr. D.Y. Panhekar, Dr. D.M. Borikar, Dr. N.G. Telkapalliwar, and Dr. R.C. Sawant. Research areas span organic, inorganic, physical, and analytical chemistry. Candidates are advised to contact the department directly to understand the specific research focus of each supervisor and align their research interests accordingly before applying.
Ques. How many seats are available in the Ph.D. Chemistry programme at DACN, and is it easier to get admission compared to other departments?
Ans. The Chemistry department at DACN has a total intake capacity of 28 seats across four supervisors. For the 2026-27 session, 16 seats were vacant, which is significantly higher than other departments like Biochemistry (6 vacancies) or Physics (2 vacancies). This makes Chemistry one of the more accessible departments for Ph.D. admission at DACN. However, admission still depends on PET/NET qualification and the RAC interview outcome.
Ques. Do I need to clear the RTMNU PET exam to get admission, or is UGC-NET/CSIR-NET sufficient?
Ans. Candidates who have cleared UGC-NET/JRF or CSIR-NET/JRF (Chemical Sciences) are exempted from appearing in the RTMNU PET exam, as per RTMNU Direction No. 7 of 2027. However, even after PET/NET exemption, candidates must apply to the research centre, appear for the RAC interview, and be selected based on merit and supervisor availability. The final selection depends on available seats under the chosen supervisor and the candidate's research aptitude as assessed during the RAC interview.
Ques. What is the total fee for the Ph.D. Chemistry programme at DACN, and are there any additional charges?
Ans. The total fee for the Ph.D. programme at RTMNU-affiliated research centres, including DACN, is INR 60,300 for the entire programme duration (minimum 3 years). This covers the tuition fee component. Examination fees are charged separately each year/semester and are not included in this amount. Hostel facility is available at RTMNU at approximately INR 18,347 per year, but it is not mandatory for Ph.D. scholars at DACN. Candidates should verify the latest fee structure at the time of admission as fees may be revised.
Ques. What fellowship or financial support can a Ph.D. Chemistry student at DACN expect?
Ans. Students who have qualified CSIR-JRF (Chemical Sciences) or UGC-JRF are entitled to a monthly fellowship of INR 37,000 (for the first two years) and INR 42,000 (as Senior Research Fellow thereafter), along with a contingency grant. SC/ST/Minority category students can apply for NFSC, RGNF, or MANF fellowships through the National Scholarship Portal. Students without JRF qualification do not automatically receive a stipend; they must independently apply for available fellowship schemes such as DST-INSPIRE.
Ques. What is the process after clearing the PET exam and getting provisional admission at DACN?
Ans. After clearing the RTMNU PET (or with NET/JRF exemption), candidates apply to the DACN Chemistry Research Centre, appear for the RAC interview, and if selected, complete provisional admission formalities. Following provisional admission, candidates must complete the mandatory pre-Ph.D. coursework as per RTMNU Direction No. 33 of 2026. The coursework covers research methodology and subject-specific advanced topics. Only after successful completion of coursework and its assessment can the candidate formally register the research topic and begin full-fledged thesis work. The schedule for research topic registration is announced separately by RTMNU.
