IIA Ph.D. FAQs
Ques. What is the minimum qualification required to apply for Ph.D. at IIA?
Ans. Candidates must have an M.Sc or Integrated M.Sc degree in Physics, Applied Physics, Engineering Physics, Applied Mathematics, Astronomy, Electronics, Photonics, or Optics from a UGC-recognized university. Alternatively, M.E./M.Tech degrees in relevant fields are also accepted. A minimum of 60% marks throughout the academic career is required, and the post-graduation degree must be from a UGC-recognized institution.
Ques. Is CSIR-NET/GATE/JEST qualification mandatory for Ph.D. admission at IIA?
Ans. Yes, candidates must have a valid CSIR/UGC-NET (JRF) score in Physics, OR a GATE score above 95 percentile, OR a JEST score above 95 percentile at the time of admission. These entrance examination scores are mandatory and form an important part of the selection criteria.
Ques. What is the duration of the Ph.D. program at IIA?
Ans. The Ph.D. program at IIA typically takes 3-5 years to complete. The first year consists of coursework and a short-term research project. The remaining years are dedicated to full-time research and thesis work. The total tenure of fellowship support may not ordinarily exceed five years, inclusive of the one-year coursework.
Ques. What are the career prospects after completing Ph.D. from IIA?
Ans. Ph.D. graduates from IIA have excellent career prospects in academia, research institutions, and the space sector. Graduates can pursue postdoctoral research at national and international institutions, secure faculty positions in universities, work as research scientists in government laboratories (CSIR, ISRO, DST), or join private sector organizations in space technology and data science. Ques. What is the fellowship amount and other financial support provided?
Ans. All admitted Ph.D. students receive a Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) of 37,000 rupees per month for the first two years. Upon successful assessment, students are upgraded to Senior Research Fellowship (SRF) of 42,000 rupees per month. Upon thesis submission, the fellowship is enhanced to 46,000 rupees per month. Additionally, students receive annual book grants, medical facilities, hostel accommodation (or house rent allowance), and support for conference participation.
Ques. How many times per year are Ph.D. admissions conducted at IIA?
Ans. Ph.D. admissions at IIA are conducted twice a year with intake in January and August. The application portal for the August intake typically opens in May and closes in June, with interviews in July. For the January intake, applications open in September and close in October, with interviews in November. This provides flexibility for candidates to apply in their preferred intake session.
