TKMIT B.Tech Food Technology FAQs

Ques. Is B.Tech Food Technology at TKMIT a good choice for students interested in the food industry, and what are the career prospects after graduation?

Ans. B.Tech Food Technology at TKMIT is a well-regarded programme in Kerala, especially given its NBA accreditation and affiliation to KTU. Graduates can work in food processing companies, quality assurance labs, R&D departments, regulatory bodies (like FSSAI), and the hospitality/food service industry. Some graduates also pursue M.Tech in Food Technology or MBA in Food Business Management. According to the college's mandatory disclosure, the average placement package for Food Technology graduates is around Rs. ₹3.2-3.4 lakh per annum, with students also opting for higher studies. The food industry in India is growing rapidly, making this a relevant and future-ready programme.

Ques. What is the difference between Merit quota and Management quota seats at TKMIT for B.Tech Food Technology, and how does the fee differ?

Ans. Out of 60 total seats in B.Tech Food Technology, 30 seats (50%) are filled through the Government/Merit quota via KEAM counselling conducted by CEE Kerala. The remaining 30 seats (50%) are Management quota seats filled by the institution based on merit. The tuition fee for Merit quota students is Rs. ₹60,000 per year (total Rs. ₹2,88,840 for 4 years including other charges), while Management quota students pay Rs. ₹85,000 per year as tuition (total Rs. ₹3,55,280 for 4 years). Management quota students with good KEAM ranks can avail institutional scholarships that significantly reduce the effective tuition fee.

Ques. Does TKMIT have hostel facilities for Food Technology students, and how much does it cost?

Ans. Yes, TKMIT has separate hostel facilities for boys and girls. Hostel accommodation is optional and not included in the course fee. The approximate hostel cost is Rs. ₹6,000 to Rs. ₹7,000 per month, which includes mess/food charges. Students from outside Kollam district typically prefer hostel accommodation. It is advisable to apply for hostel allocation early as seats may be limited. The campus is located at Musaliar Hills, Karuvelil P.O., Ezhukone, Kollam, which is approximately 22 km from Kollam railway station.

Ques. Is KEAM the only entrance exam accepted for B.Tech Food Technology admission at TKMIT, or is JEE Main score also considered?

Ans. For Government/Merit quota seats at TKMIT (and all Kerala self-financing engineering colleges), admission is exclusively through KEAM conducted by CEE Kerala. JEE Main scores are not used for seat allotment in the Kerala state counselling process. However, for Management quota seats, the institution may consider JEE Main ranks or board marks as part of their merit criteria. Students who have appeared only in JEE Main and not in KEAM will not be eligible for Merit quota seats at TKMIT.

Ques. What specialised labs and facilities does the Food Technology department at TKMIT have?

Ans. The Food Technology department at TKMIT is equipped with specialised laboratories for food processing, food analysis, food microbiology, and food engineering. The department has received infrastructure grants from the Ministry of Food Processing Industries (Government of India) for setting up the B.Tech FT course, which has helped build industry-standard lab facilities. Students get hands-on training in areas like baking and confectionery technology, fruit and vegetable processing, dairy processing, functional foods, and nutraceuticals. The department also conducts industrial visits and invites guest lectures from food industry professionals.

Ques. Can a student from outside Kerala (CBSE/ISC board) apply for B.Tech Food Technology at TKMIT, and what are the eligibility conditions?

Ans. Yes, students from outside Kerala who have studied under CBSE or ISC boards can apply for B.Tech Food Technology at TKMIT. For Merit quota seats, they must appear in KEAM 2026 and meet the eligibility criteria (Physics and Mathematics compulsory, Chemistry/Computer Science as optional, minimum 45% aggregate in PCM). For Management quota seats, CBSE/ISC students with 90% marks in PCM aggregate are eligible for the institutional scholarship (Rs. ₹25,000 per year reduction in tuition fee). However, reservation benefits under Kerala state categories (SC/ST/OBC) are available only to Kerala domicile candidates.
