GCQ BA Economics FAQs
Ques. Is there an entrance exam for BA (Economics) admission at GCQ Quepem, or is it purely merit-based?
Ans. Admission to BA (Economics) at GCQ Quepem is purely merit-based on 12th (HSSC) marks. There is no entrance exam. Students apply through the DHE Goa centralised e-Samarth portal (goaadmission.samarth.ac.in), and merit lists are prepared based on aggregate marks in the qualifying examination. Students from CBSE, ICSE, or other boards are also eligible but must obtain an Eligibility Certificate from Goa University. Given the government college status and affordable fees, seats are competitive, especially for General category students.
Ques. What subjects can I study alongside Economics in the BA programme at GCQ under NEP 2020?
Ans. Under NEP 2020, the BA at GCQ is structured as a Single Major programme. If you choose Economics as your Single Major (Honours), you will study Economics as your core discipline across all 6 semesters, along with compulsory papers in English, Environmental Studies, Indian Culture and Heritage, and a Skill Enhancement Course (SEC). You may also have the option of a Minor subject from other disciplines offered by the college such as History, Political Science, Sociology, Geography, or Languages, depending on the NEP 2020 curriculum structure approved by Goa University for the current academic year.
Ques. What is the attendance requirement at GCQ, and what happens if I fall short?
Ans. As per Goa University Ordinance OA-17, students must maintain a minimum cumulative attendance of 75% of total lectures and practicals in a semester, and a minimum of 50% attendance in any individual paper/course. Students who fail to meet the 75% requirement are not eligible to appear for the Semester End Assessment (SEA) and must seek re-admission in the subsequent academic year. However, relaxations are available for medical grounds (up to 25% absence with medical certificate), NCC/NSS/Sports participation (marked as 'D' - on duty), and maternity leave (additional 25% relaxation for women). Monthly attendance is displayed on the college notice board.
Ques. Is hostel accommodation available for BA students at GCQ Quepem?
Ans. Currently, there is no hostel facility available at GCQ Quepem for students. However, a 50-bedded girls hostel of international standard has been sanctioned under RUSA funding and is under construction. It is tentatively expected to be available by the end of the 2026-27 academic year. Male students and students from outside Quepem will need to arrange private accommodation in the surrounding areas. The college is located about 2 km from Quepem town, and local transport and private accommodation options are available in the vicinity.
Ques. What are the career options after completing BA (Economics) from GCQ Quepem?
Ans. A BA (Economics) degree from GCQ opens up a wide range of career paths. Graduates can pursue careers as economists, financial analysts, banking professionals, civil servants (UPSC/GPSC), research assistants, journalists, social workers, or teachers. Many students go on to pursue MA in Economics at Goa University or other universities, or professional courses like MBA, CA, or CS. The college's strong academic record and Goa University affiliation ensure that the degree is well-recognised. Employment areas include banks, financial and economic research organisations, government departments, export companies, law firms, multinational companies, and media organisations.
Ques. How does the NEP 2020 multi-point exit system work for BA (Economics) at GCQ?
Ans. Under NEP 2020, the BA programme at GCQ offers flexible exit options. After completing Year 1 (2 semesters), students can exit with a Certificate in the chosen discipline. After Year 2 (4 semesters), students can exit with a Diploma. After completing all 3 years (6 semesters), students receive the full BA degree with Honours in Economics. This is particularly useful for students who need to discontinue studies due to personal, financial, or professional reasons, as they leave with a recognised qualification rather than nothing. Students who exit early can re-enter the programme later to complete the remaining years, subject to Goa University's re-admission rules.
