GSS Ph.D. Mathematics FAQs
Ques. Is the Ph.D. in Mathematics at GITAM available at all three campuses?
Ans. Yes, the Ph.D. in Mathematics is available at all three GITAM campuses - Visakhapatnam, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru. Students can choose their preferred campus at the time of application, subject to seat availability and supervisor availability at that campus. The GReAT exam for Science disciplines is conducted in-person at the GITAM campus, so candidates should plan accordingly.
Ques. Can a B.Tech. or M.Tech. graduate apply for the Ph.D. in Mathematics at GITAM?
Ans. Yes, candidates with a 4-year B.Tech./B.E. in any discipline with a minimum of 75% marks, or an M.Tech. in a relevant discipline with a minimum of 55% marks, are eligible for the Ph.D. in Mathematics at GITAM. This makes the programme accessible to engineering graduates with strong mathematical backgrounds who wish to pursue research in applied mathematics, numerical methods, or computational mathematics.
Ques. What is the GITAM PhD Fellowship and is it available for Mathematics scholars?
Ans. The GITAM PhD Fellowship offers Rs. 33,000 per month for a maximum of three years to full-time on-campus Ph.D. scholars across all disciplines, including Mathematics. However, the fellowship is not automatically guaranteed to every admitted scholar and is subject to availability and university norms. Candidates who already hold a CSIR-JRF or UGC-JRF fellowship will continue on their external fellowship and may be transitioned to the GITAM fellowship after its completion. Scholars should confirm fellowship terms at the time of receiving the offer letter.
Ques. Which CSIR-NET subject is relevant for Ph.D. in Mathematics admission at GITAM?
Ans. For Ph.D. in Mathematics, the relevant CSIR-NET subject is Mathematical Sciences. Candidates with a valid CSIR-NET score in Mathematical Sciences are exempted from the GReAT written test and directly called for an interview. UGC-NET in Mathematical Sciences and GATE in Mathematics (MA paper) are also accepted. Candidates should note that CSIR-NET is conducted twice a year (June and December sessions) and the score must be valid at the time of application to GITAM.
Ques. What research areas are typically available for Ph.D. in Mathematics at GITAM Visakhapatnam?
Ans. The Mathematics faculty at GITAM Visakhapatnam typically works in areas such as fluid dynamics, heat and mass transfer, numerical analysis, graph theory, algebraic structures, differential equations, mathematical modelling, operations research, fuzzy mathematics, and computational mathematics. Prospective students are advised to identify a potential supervisor and research area before applying, as admission is subject to supervisor availability. Contact the department at phdsupport@gitam.edu for faculty profiles and current research projects.
Ques. Can an MCA graduate apply for the Ph.D. in Mathematics at GITAM?
Ans. Yes, MCA graduates are explicitly eligible for the Ph.D. in Mathematics at GITAM, provided they have a minimum of 55% aggregate marks. This is a notable feature of GITAM's eligibility criteria, as MCA graduates with strong mathematical foundations can directly apply for the PhD in Mathematics without needing an M.Sc. in Mathematics. Candidates with M.Sc. in Data Science, Statistics, or Physics are also eligible, making this programme accessible to a wide range of quantitative science graduates.
